was set for trial on Thursday afternoon.
The Sudduth case was continued on
^ motion of Captain J. A. Mooney for
the defence, who said he had discovered
new evidence that would come
from a witness living 40 miles in the
country whom he could not get here in
time for the trial on Wednesday. The
State objected to continuance. All the
jail cases, except that against Sudduth,
^ had been disposed of, and the Cox case
was continued as the defendant was
already out on bond.
Monnnient to Travln, Bowie and Bonhain.
Congressman Talbert has just succeeded
in getting a favorable report on
his bill introduced in congress on Dec.
* 14, last, "to provide for the erection of
a monument to the memory of Travis,
Bonbam and Bowie at the Alamo."
The text of the bill now reads as
follows: Be it enacted by the senate aud
house of representatives of the United
States of America in congress assembled,
That the secretary of war be, and
is hereby, authorized to contract for
and secure the erection of a monument
*? in the town of Saluda, South Carolina,
to the memory of William Barrett
fT?-.1 . T ? ?? Unnknm . n T Q mOO
1 rttvis, Iiauira DUUuaui auu vuujv>j
Bowie, who perished at the Alamo od
March 6lb, 1836 ; and for this purpose
the sum of $10,000 is hereby appropriated,
out of aDy moneys in the treasury
not otherwise appropriated, together
with $100 annually thereafter for
v keeping the same. "The report of the
committee on library on the bill was
as follows: "The committee on the
library, to whom was referred the bill
(H. R. 4305) to provide for the erection
of a monument to the memory of
Travis and Bowie, make the following
report: That William Barrett Travis
and James Bowie and James Bonham
Hintinirnished themselves for eallantrv
and bravery and perished in the mes.
morable defense of the Alamo. In that
battle the brave little force continued
the defense of the dismantled fortress
until all but six bad been killed. This
number surrendered, but being taken
before Santa Anna were, by bis orders,
instantly cut to pieces. Travis and
Bowie and Bonbam were all born near
the town of Saluda, S. C. It is, theres
fore, thought appropriate that there
should be erected a monument to the
memory of these distinguished men at
the place of their birth. As the great
services of these men were eventually
beneficial to their nation, it is fitting
that the nation should present such a
testimonials of its appreciation of their
sacrifices and gallantry to the people
who knew and loved them. Your
committee, therefore, recommend the
passage of the bill.

THE DR. LINDSAY PLANTATION
FOR SALE.
A 821-Acre Highly Improved Farm,
Adjacent to Town Conveniences.
FOR cash, or upon satisfactory terms to
the right party, I offer at private sale
that tract of land on the southwestern
outskirts of Yorkvillo, known as the I)r.
J. F. LINDSAY PLANTATION.
This plantation includes '121 ACRES,
lying on both sides of the Pinckney road,
which runs nearly through the centre.
The S. C. & O. Extension railroad passes
through one corner, and the C. A N.-W.
R. R. runs within about 200 yards of the
eastern bonndry. The northeastern line
is within lif miles of the courthouse, and
the town is accessible over either the
Chester or Pickney roads.
There are under cultivation and in
pasture about 200 acres, and the balance is
in woodland, most of which is original
forest, including many THOUSAND
CORDS OF FIREWOOD, and more or
less valuable timber. That portion of
land which is under cultivation is highly
improved, including a thorough system
of terraces cast along scientific lines and
of from seven to ten years' standing. All
the land lies well.
The buildings include a ONE STORY
FRAME BUILDING, 5 rooms, in fair repair,
suitable for overseer, on the Pinckney
road, just two miles from the courthouse,
a good barn and four outbuildings,
with a well of good water. There are on
the place FOUR TENEMENT HOUSES,
each near a spring, and on the place
six springs, all of which are convenient
to one or the other of the different cultivated
fields.
Several of the fields have, with favorable
seasons, vielded an average of a
BALE OF COTTON TO THE ACRE,
and one four-acre tract has a record of
SEVEN BALES. This plantation was
improved by the late Dr. J. F. LINDSAY,
during a period of 25 years, and most of
the local public is aware that, especially
during the last ten years of his life, ho
made on it heavier crops at less expense
than were made by any other farmer on
any other plantation in this section of the
county. All of the land is as good or
better now than it has ever been.
I ask for this plantation $25 AN ACRE.
I am farming the place this year and
would want to give possession January
1st, 1901; but in the meantime the purchaser
would be at liberty to build, cut
timber or do anything else that would
not interfere with the cultivation or gathering
of the crop.
The situatiou of the property makes it
valuably as a place to run a PUBLIC
(IIN, and one has been successfully run
there lor years. The gin house is well
built, covered with metal and in good
repair. The ginning outfit consists of a
12 horse power engine, GO-saw Van Winkle
gin, condenser, feeder and a press?all
in good running order. If a sale is made
in time to enable me to arrange to put my
stock, etc., on another place for next year,
I will put this ginning outfit in without
charge to the purchaser.
For further information, call upon or
write to me at Yorkville, S. C.
