ROCK HILL HAPPENINGS.
Thanksgiving Day Observed?Sent Up for
Gambling?Off for the Exposition.
Correspondence of the Yorkvllle Enquirer.
Rock Hill,November 25.?All the business
houses of this place will be closed
on Thursday?Thanksgiving Day?and
the clerks will be enabled to enjoy a much
needed holiday. Our local sportsmen
will spend the day in the country, hunting.
Our city seems to be furnishing its quota
of visitors at the Atlanta exposition. The
faculty and students of the Normal and
Industrial college will, we are informed,
leave for Atlanta Wednesday morning, on
a special train.
John Johnson and Will Smith, colored,
were sent to the chain gang last Thursday
for gambling. Their sentences are for 30
days each. Verily, the way of the transgressor
is hard. We now have a very
respectable chain gang, numerically
speaking.
Drs. Crawford and Strait today removed
a shot from one of Mr. S. A. Clark's eyes
* that had been there for seven years.
MERE MENTION.
John Sherman has published a book of
reminiscences in which he has succeeded
in stirring up the animals, tie has had
something to say about the best record of
various public men who are still alive,
and they are tilling the papers with
answers to his criticisms and advertising
his book. Six boys were trying to dig
? a cave under a sandbank near Louisville,
Ky., on Thursday of last week. The
bank caved in and two of the boys were
killed. Congressman AmosCummings
is preparing for introduction in the next
house, a resolution recognizing .'he Cubans
as beligerents. A 'big fire broke
out in the Excelsior building, in Chicago,
on Thursday of last week, and destroytd
property to the amount of 8250,000.

has given notice of an intention to bid for
the entertainment of the next national
Republican convention. A slight shock
of earthquake, lasting several seconds,
was felt in, Wyoming, on Friday of last

Irby on the Suffrage.?United
States Senator J. L. M. Irby, of South
Carolina, was at the Central hotel last
eveniug.
A representative of The Observer saw
Senator Irby and asked him for all the
late South Carolina news.
'You can iust sav." said the sena
tor, 4,that I have nothing to say for
publication."
"Then the constitution you and your
people have just made suits you exactly?"
"No, it don't; some of it don't suit
me at all."
"Can't we publish what your objecttions
are to the results of the work
you have been helping to do?"
"I object to the suffrage clause that
was adopted."
"What are the objections to the suffrage
clause?"
"It is going to disfranchise a lot of
poor people who have been Tillman's
and Irby's best friends."
"The news has been sent out that
you have that part fixed your own way.
Under the regulations you have made
you can let in as many poor people as
you please."
"Yes; but it is a question whether
that part of the law is constitutional or
not. Some of the lawyers think that
part of the suffrage clause of the con
stitutioo will go clown betore tbe couns.
If this should happen, and the restriction
part should stand, then we have
simply disfranchised a lot of our best
constitutents. I, for one, never intended
to do this, and am not satisfied at
the possible prospect of it."
Senator Irby is on bis way to Spartanburg,
whence he goes home.?Charlotte

j FLOWERS-PLAIN
e AND RARE f
ANY and everybody knows that there
are many and various kinds of
flowers. Everybody knows that flowers
grow spontaneously from the earth, a id
c that some are, by their peculiar fragran e
more valuable than others. The material
seems to be graded as if they were articles
of commerce, and so it is with every
other product of nature whether it be
I stone, metals, woods, or whatsover. A
* stone, may be a stone, and there are only a
~ very few who would deny it?still there
. are some?and yet there are very few who
; would claim that a "nigger head" was as
valuable as diamonds, or that a pound of
iron was as valuable as pound of gold,
all articles are graded according to their
quality and rarity and the value is fixed
r according to the supply and cost of pros
duction.
