A large gander belonging to Mr. W. L. Plexico came plodding home last Saturday! and took his accustomed place in the barn j u yard. During the high waters of the previ-11 ous Monday, the old fellow was washed over U the mill dam and went down the creek. It | > is presumed that He had a swim of about 1 five days; but looked none the worse for (( his trip. Allison Creek church sent a big box of ' provisions and clothing to Thoruwell or-1 phanage last week. Mr. D. A. A. Watson got his hand caught j in a cotton gin oncdav last week and lost two i1 * - l> lingers. t Master Frank Plexico is 011 a two weeks' , visit to friends at Sharon and Bullock's Creek. Miss Eula Setzer is at home from Newton college to spend the holidaj's. ^ Miss Ida Ferguson will return from the ] college at Hickory this week. M. , SOUTH CAROLINA NEWS. On 1 Tuesday, Gus Cromer, a white boy aged 14 2 years, was on his way from Pelzer to Williamston, and carrying an axe, a bag of cotton seed, some cloth, some potatoes, and in his pocket a spool of thread. Wednesday, " the boy was found lying dead. His head J and face had been horribly cut and mutila- e ted with the axe. Suspicion pointed to a 17 v year old Negro boy named Ed Suliivan. [ Sullivan was arrested and the cloth and a thread that had been in the possession of I Cromer were found at his home. He con- ^ fessed to the murder, and was started to- t ward Anderson jail. In the .meantime, a mob of 500 people collected with the avowed purpose of lynching the Negro. Governor Evans ordered out the Greenville Guards. The guards promply responded ; but before they could start for the scene, the news "] came that the Negro was dead. He was J hanged to the limb of p hickory tree just on jj the outskirts of Williamston. Before his g death, he implicated another party, and the I governor ordered the Greenville Guards to ( attend the inquest. The accused man, how- " ever, proved an alibi and there was no fur- t ther trouble. Jflarltet Jtcporfs. ' YORKVILLE, December 19.?Cotton 4 to 5. ^ LIVERPOOL, December 17.?Cotton 3Jd. One of the principal reasons of e results stated above is: That in conducting; < y businessduring the present year I have been ; ickcd by ample capital to conduct my business c i a strictly cash basis, and this is how tiiat arks: I luiy $2,000 worth of goods in Xew j ork,'and the wholesale merchants give me <? >r cent, discount for cash, which simply means ( ^et a dollar's worth of goods for! >4 cents, hence in see freight bills conic'out of this, which will i ing up the cost of the goods to about cents i the dollar of first cost; so I make .'U cents on i cli dollar invested, or *70 profit on the $1,000 j i>rtli of goods when sold.
