Wm. Davis, while trying, on Thursday afternoon,
to dislodge a 'possum from a tree,
in broad open daylight, stepped upon a
treacherous limb, which gave way, and precipitated
him a distance of 22 feet to the
ground. Fortunately for our young friend,
his experience and skill as a gymnast, enabled
him to reach terra firma on his feet,
and, although he was pretty badly shaken
up and has been very sore ever since, yet no
bones were brokeu and no serious injury
done.
Mrs. J. M. Guyton is visiting her sister,
Mrs. W. A. Neal, in Columbia, and also had
the pleasure of attending the State fair last

Mrs. A. F. DufF is visiting relatives in

Miss Mary Holmes, of Gaffuey City, has
been chosen to fill the place made vacant by
the resignation of Miss Pitsch, and entered
upon her duties yesterday morning.

During her absence, her place was filled by
Miss Alice Davis.
While on a visit last week to Mrs. W. D,

Davis was taken suddenly ill, and for several
days was quite sick; but the latest news
from her was very favorable and she is expected
home in a day or two.

POINTS FROM PINEVILLE.
Cotton Mill.* to Start Again?Personal and Other
Matters of Local Interest.
Correspondence of the Yorkvllle Enquirer.
Pineville, N. C., November 19.?It is
expected that the Dover cotton mills will
begin operations by December 1, next. The
handsome niue room residence of. Superintendent
Nutall is nearing completion, and
the houses of the operatives are beginning to
give this town the appearance of quite a pretentious
little city.
Mr. T. D. Hargrave and several friends
from Charlotte, arrived here this morning on
a visit to Mr. Will Boyce. They are to engage
in a big hnut to last for several duys.
All of our sick people, with the exception
of Mrs. G. S. Robinson, have gotten well.
Mi3s Hattie Curtis, of ^Ninety-Six, S. C., is
visiting Miss Minnie Garrison and other
friends in this vicinity.

Rev. R. W. Alexander, of Cordele, Ga., is
visiting relatives here. He preached a splendid
sermon last Sunday. xxx
MERE MENTION.
F. K. Swank, aged 60 years, was run
over by a bicycle in Birmingham, Alabama,
last week, and killed. A steamer from
Savannah, Ga., arrived at Algiers last Wednesday
with fire in her cargo of cotton. It
is believed that the fire was produced by the
action of some chemical pluced on board the
ship by incendiuries in Savannah.
Judge Andrew Anderson, of Nashville,
Tcnuesseee, was shot aud killed last Wednesday
by George Whitworth, ex-clerk of
the court. Judge Anderson recently discharged
Clerk Whitworth aud appointed
his son, Granville Anderson, instead. This
is believed to be the cause of the killing.
A cotton ship caught fire very mysteriously
in Galveston harbor last Wednesday. ^ There
is reuson to believe that the cotton incendiaries
are at work at that port also.
Forest fires are reported to have raged
fiercely in the vicinity of Holly Springs,
Miss., last week. In many cases the people
had to turn out and figbt desperately to
save their homes. Contests don't count
in the Georgia legislature. Twenty-three
contest were brought before that body on
last Thursday by Populists and all were
dismissed. Ground has been broken
for the erection of a million dollar tobacco
factory in St. Louis, Mo. Destructive
forest fires raged in Tennessee and Arkansas
last week. More than a dozen people are
reported burned to death. The Aristocratic
Woman club, of Chicago, last week,
rnnKidered the ouestion of admitting to
membership Fanny B. Williams, the noted
colored lecturer. After a stormy discussiou,
the application for membership was refused.
On November G, Hamilton coun.
1y, Ohio, was carried by the Republicans by a
majority of 24,000, and one week later, in
the election of a judge, it was carried by the
Democrats by a haajority 7,000. The
Knights of Lubor held their annual meeting
in New Orleans last week. On Tuesday
of last week, two. children were burned to
death near Natchez, Miss., and three were
burned near Keller, La. In both instances
the parents were out iu the fields picking
cotton. The general assembly of Alabama
met on November 13, and the threatened
row with the Populists did not develop.
The election for Uuited States senator will
take place on the 27th. Only 1,100
miles of railroad truck have been luid in the
United States during the year 1894. This is
the smallest showing for thirty years.
General Cassius M. Clay, of Kentucky,
aged 80, was, last week, married to Miss
Dora Richardson, aged only 15.
MATTERS AT BLAIKSV1LLE
Plenty of Hog and Hominy?Death of Mr. Henry
Latham?SlckneMH?The Wedding lielU.
Correspondence of The Yorkvllle Enquirer.
Blairsville, November 19.?The election
passed off quietly and thiugs have been
quiet ever siuce. Corn hauling, which has
been greater than usual, is about over, am]
cotton picking is drawing to a close. Wheal
sowing has begun and people are still crying
"hard times."
I have heard of some corn shuckings, which
sounds like old times. I think we will
have plenty of hog and hominy this yeai
to keep us alive ; but this probably may not
pay debts so fast.
Mr. Henry Latham, of this vicinity, who
has been sick for some time, died at his
home on last Thursday evening at the advanced
age of 78 years. The funeral exercises
were conducted, on Friday morning, by the
Rev. J. P. Knox, of Hickory Grove, and the
remains were interred at Sharon cemetery.
We are still having sickness in our community.
Among those on the sick list are
Mr. S. A. Mitchell and Miss Elvira Maloney.
" Both are supposed to have fever.
The sick members of the family of the late
Mr. R. T. Riggins, I am glad to report, are
all improving.

? The Greenville News says that 01
Tuesday of last week, dispensary constable
went over to West Greenville and searche<
J. E. Paine's old jdace, now kept by Wil
Hum Godfrey. They found "signs" a plen
ty, but no liquor. One of the constable
had soiled his hands and went to the wate
faucet behind the bar to wash them. Con,
stable Workman turned the cock, and the
, other constable washed his hands and then
suddenly discovered to his amazement that
( he was washing them in pure corn whisky.
, After a long investigation, it was found that
there was a keg of liquor on top of the
, house. A pipe from it passed through the
roof, down the walls, under the Hoor and in- j
? to the end of the water pipe, where it wasj
shut ofF with a separate cock. Turning one
handle would bring pure water, while the
other would evoke corn juice from the same
faucet. The liquor and apparatus were
r confiscated and Godfrey was arrested, but1
released on bond.
