that the dispenser be allowed $00 per annum for clerk hire. Dispenser Whisonant accepted the reduction with the understanding that hereafter he will ruu the dispensary in connection with private business, to be conducted in the same room. He will probably not commence his private business, however, until the first of January. Mr. Whisonant expressed it as his opinion that the sales of liquor for October have been larger than for September; but the profits of the dispensary from the time it was opened up to October 31, a period of nearly four months, will fall considerably short of paying all expenses. The next session of the general assem bly will convene in Columbia on Tuesday, November 28. Death of Captain Carllxle. ? Captain T. P. Carlisle, of Chester county, died at his home in Halsellville last Saturday night of dropsy. AHMlMtifnt Surgeon in the Army. ? l)r. T. S. Bratton, of Yorkville, has secured an appointment to a desirable berth j as assistant surgeon in the United States army, at a salary of $1,800 per annum. MeetH November 28. ? The supreme court meets on November 28. The docket will be unusually large. Ordinarily it only has about one hundred cases. Already one huudred and fifty cases v have been docketed, and it is likely that by the time the court meets, there will be forty or fifty more. ConimlHtiloner Traxler hus Designed. ? Dispensary Commissioner Traxler has resigned his membership in the Baptist | church at Timmonsville. The church was | about to turn him out on account of his con-1 nection with the dispensary. The church ; withdrew its fellowship from him, and the I matter is now supposed to be settled. Called to GaMtonla and I'iNgah. ? Rev. J. C. Galloway has received notice that at the next meeting of presbytery, which meets at Charlotte, on November 0, i he will be presented with a call to the pastor-; ate of Gastonia and Pisgah churches. Mr. i Galloway is ut present considering the mat- j ter, but as yet has reached no decision. It Han Been Beneficial. ? A correspondent writing from Western i York says: "The dispensary law has certain- j ly been beneficial in this section. Before the , passage of the law, traveling barrooms were j to be found everywhere; but these have all been run out of the country, and they are < afraid to come back." Tli?* Same Day. ? In last week's Enquirkk Messrs. M. & H. C. Struss advertised for the owner of a pocket-book picked up on the street recently by Miss Norma Strauss. The owner was Mrs. T. C. Way, of Yorkville. Her husband applied for, described and recovered the lost property the same morning the advertisement appeared. 'Tending Upward." ? Last Wednesday we quoted cotton at | from 7} to 8 cent3. Duriug the day a few bales sold as high as 8.05 and 8.10, but later't there was a sharp decline and today the i market ranges from 71 to 7i with a "slight; tendency upward." All Hie buyers seem to : bave hopes of better prices even before the close of the week. The Flat at How-ell'K Ferry. ? People living just across Broad river,1 in Union county, complain that they are greatly inconvenienced by the loss of the Hat at Howell's ferry. Unless some arrangements are soon perfected, many of thein j who have heretofore been bringing their cotton to Hickory Grove, will be compelled to i go elsewhere. Somebody ought to take the matter in hand. I'iclure of Kock Hill's College. ? Columbia Register: Architect Bruce > presented The Register with a handsome I colored picture showing how the Industrial j and Wiuthrop Normal college will look when completed. The picture shows a building of, beautiful proportions, and one of the hand-. somest in the whole country. The design is a j?oein of architectural beauty. A Narrow Escape. ? Mr. W. H. Hcriulon was at Hickory \ (irove yesterday. He informs us that while there, the cotton gin belonging to Messrs. j Wilkerson, Moorehead, Scoggins & Smith, j had a narrow escape from destruction by fire. How the fire originated is not known,; but when discovered it was making rapid j headway, and had it not been for well j directed work, the entire property would , have been speedily consumed. The loss was ! about #25. Mr. Neville to be Installed next Sunday. ? The services at the Presbyterian church next Sunday will be of especial interest. The occasion will be the installation of Rev. W. Harrison, of Yorkville, will charge the pastor. The services will commence at the usual hour on Sunday morning. * ?n U'Uou 1 iruii ?? ?? ? Everybody is no doubt uware that threshed wheat contains dirt, dust, gravel,, smut and pieces of straw, but we venture to say that comparatively few are aware that it also contains such a quantity of iron?ordi- j nary metallic iron?as could, if it were not re- j moved, materially aflect the (lour. Such is j the case, however. A representative of Tick ' Esql'IRKB visited Kiddle's Champion Roller Mills recently. Among other things, he was shown the different machinery ami appliances for cleaning wheat before it is al- j lowed to go into the hopper. One of the | m I most striking devices is a system of magnets, used to catch particles of iron that are mixed in the grain. All these particles are collected on the magnets, and they are so numerous p as to be really astouishing. The iron comes ; mainly from the machinery of the threshers, and is generally in particles, often not so i large as the grains of wheat. The wonder- j ful magnets, however, are always on the j' alert, and not a single stray particle of iron ! ever gets into the flour. Meeting at the ItaptlKt Church Cloned. I ( ? The protracted services at the Baptist church, mention of which was made two ? weeks ago, came to a close on Wednesday j night of last week, when six converts were baptized by the pastor, Rev. W. J. Langston. i The ordinance was witnessed by a large congregation of people. Nine converts were added to the church during the meeting, and j the membership was greatly revived. Rev. | H. C\ Buckholz, who assisted the pastor, proved himself to be an earnest, faithful and , miniefns nf i llO trncilf*! 1 L'IVV|UU1U iiuiliovvi v. iifv ^VW|'V.. Sharon's Hospitality. ? The congregation of Sharon church has always been noted for its splendid hospital- 1 ity. Its right to this reputation was never more clearly demonstrated than during the past week. At the close of each morning ] service, Rev. J. C. Galloway gave all visitors to understand that wherever they saw a J table they were invited to make themselves ; at home ; and at recess, while the ladies of the various families were preparing lunch, ; the male members were out compelling all they could find to come to the feast. The individual who failed to get an invitation ( to dinner on any day during the meeting of ' synod, was hid in the woods. ! Caught oil the Rebound. ? Last Saturday night, John Osby, col- i ored, was arrested by Policeman Wilson for disorderly conduct. While Mr. Wilson was ? trying to unlock the door of the calaboose, Osby made a break for liberty. Mr. Wilson followed. t Before Osby had gone twenty yards, with terrific force he ran into a wire f fence and was shot back almost into the arms of Mr. Wilson as from a catapult, j Thontrh somewhat dazed, Osby next tried to ] dodge past the officer, but in doing so, re- i ceived a smart tap on the head that felled 1 him to the ground. He was locked up without further difficulty. On being taken before the intendant, Osby complained of a large bump on the side of his head, but as ! it was clear that he alone was responsible > for the same, ho got no sympathy. He 1 was fined $5.00, of which he paid $2.05 in ' cash, and is working the balance out on the streets. SOUTH CAROLINA NEWS. , A Reconl Breaker. ] ? A dispatch from Becca, Spartanburg I county, to the Atlanta Constitution, says that ; Mr. R. E. Bulman, of that place, on last , Thursday, picked 4S9 pounds of cotton in i twelve hours. 1 Hax Drunkenness Decreased ? , ? Governor Tillman is going to send out i circulars to the boards of the city and town ! governments of the State asking for coinpar- ( ative figures on drunkenness before and since the dispensary law went into effect. He will probably use the figures in his message to the legislature, as he believes there has been a marked decrease in drunkenness. < To be Married oil October 31. j ? Cards are out for the marriage of Miss , Amelia Brown, of Anderson, to Rev. John s R. Edwards, of Due West. Miss Brown is J an accomplished young lady with a host of j friends. Mr. Edwards is a rising young min- > ister of the Associate Reformed church, late- 1 ly appointed a missionary to the City of * Mexico. ' Will Make No Further Concessions. ? Not satisfied with the temporary reduction of the phosphate royalty to 50 cents a ton. on account of the recent storm, the mining companies have united in a request to the board of phosphate commissioners to *~ s\f tUo fo/lnntinn fnr glUUUUI.ee II tuiuiuuaiiti; ui uiv ivuuvuvu .v. a period of five years. As chairman of the < board of commissioners, Governor Tillman has replied that the State may as well leave the phosphate rock in the river as to give it away, and says to the companies that they i must signify their acceptance of the original rj proposition at once, or it will be withdrawn ] and the royalty again fixed at $1.05 a ton. i How Slmontou .Squirmed Out. ( ? Some weeks ago a dispensary constable * seized a stray barrel of liquor in the depot J, of the South Carolina railroad at Charles- 1 ton. The constable was taken before Judge Siiuonton and committed for contempt in interfering with property in the hands of a receiver. Shortly afterward constables ^ again discovered contraband liquor in the depot. In obedience to the order of Judge ' Simonton, they applied to him for permission to seize it. Last Saturday Judge Simonton issued the following order: "It is ordered s that the receiver of the South Carolina Kail- J, way company, at Charleston, or his author- \ ized agent, do give notice to the consignees 1 of said packages, respectively, that they are j ready for delivery, and that they will he ?. delivered to such consignees on the 24th day t of October, 1893; and that the receiver, or j' his agent, give notice to the said chief con- t stable of the time and place of said delivery, u and that such delivery take place in the 1 presence of said chief constable, and not otherwise." If the liquor was turned over to the consignee as directed, it is presumed that it was promptly seized by the constables. ^ Jjfiarhct Deports. 1 YORKVILLE, October 2(5.?Cotton 71 to 71.
