LETTER FROM CHESTER.
Correspondence of the Yorkvllle Knquirer.
Chester August 27.?A slight error occurred
in last week's letter concerning the
date of the opening of the next session of
the graded school. The school will begin
its next session on the 9th of September?
the second Monday instead of the second
day of the month.
An engine on the Chester and Cheraw
Narrow Gauge railroad jumped the track
at Knox's station last Thursday. The
cause of the wreck was an open switch.
The engine turned over on its side and
Louis Green was right severely hurt by
broken glass in one of the cab windows.
A meeting was held at Odd Fellows hall
on Friday to take steps toward the organization
of a Young Men's Christian Association
here. A partial organization was
effected. John G. Williams was elected
president, and Dr. G. B. White vice-president.
A committee was appointed to
canvass the town during this week in the
interest of the association, and report at the
next meeting to be held on Friday afternf
thio u.'P*>k\ jit. whioh meeting the
organization will be completed. A large
attendance is expected at the next meeting,
and the way seems clear for the organization
and maintenance of a flourishing
association.
The Petersburg excursion of the Sixth
regiment, which was to have been run tomorrow,
has caved in. The committee
could not dispose of enough tickets in
advance to raise the amount necessary to
secure the train, and not feeling disposed
themselves to put up the required sum,
the whole project consequently went to
pieces. This will be quite a disappointment
to those of the veterans who had set
their hearts on visiting once more, at an
early date, the scene of the great "blow
up," and the other historic points that
the proposed excursion would have compassed.
A jury went out yesterday to appraise
the value of a right of way for the Georgia,
Carolina and Northern railroad through
the lands of J. H. Walker near town.
The railroad was represented by its attorney
here, J. Lyles Glenn, while Geo. W.
Gage was present in behalfof Mr. Walker's
claim. The matter ended in an award of
$400 to Mr. Walker, which was 40 per cent,
of what he had demanded.
Carpenter, Brice & Co. lost a horse on
last Saturday night under rather peculiar
circumstances. A hack had been sent out
to Stewart & Sullivan's railroad camp in
the afternoon, returning to town after
dark. Just before reaching Mr. R. Brandt's
. residence, the driver met a runaway mule
hitched to a one horse wagon, and to further
complicate matters the mule was
blind. The driver of the hack attempted
to get his team and vehicle out of the way,
but the time was too short, and just as he
got the horses half turned, the mule dashed
into his team, plunging one shaft deep
into the side of the nearer horse. The
unlucky animal bled to death in a few
minutes.
Coffee King, colored, was hauled up a
day or two ago for stealing a hat. He was
sentenced to five days' laboron the streets.
One hundred and forty-five negroes, belonging
to J. H. Winder's force of grading
hands, came from Monroe one day last
week and were transferred from here to
their camp, eight or nine miles beyond
Broad river.

Fishing Creek Factory has shut down
for thirty days on account of the scarcity
of cotton, it is said.
Messrs. Allen Leard and J. L. Carroll
returned yesterday from Monroe, where
they went Saturday to be present at the
closing of Evangelist Leitch's great meeting
there. They report a most marvelous
religious awakening at Monroe, attended
by over one hundred and sixty accessions
to the church. Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Marshall
passed through here yesterday on
their way from the meeting. Mr. Leitch
left Monroe by way of Wilmington. He
will begin a meeting at Columbia on the
Oth of September.
Mr. Samuel G. Wilson, who formerly
lived near Blackstock, but for the past
sixteen or eighteen years a resident of
Mississippi, was in town yesterday. Mr.
Wilson is merchandising at present at
Kosciusko, Miss., where he thinks of selling
out this fall and moving to a more
healthy town. Mr. Wilson was looking
around Chester to see what inducements
he could find to come here and open a staple
and fancy grocery store.
Mr. and Mrs. S. M. Jones returned a few
days ago from a visit to Mrs. Jones's parents,
in York county. While Mr. Jones
was gone, he went to see Mr. Richard Gillespie's
prize acre of corn, which he says
is something wonderful to behold.
Dr. B. J. Randall, who loves to hunt better
than any man since Nimrod, will go
down on the Wateree in a tew days for a
week or so of fun in that line. The Dr.'s
pack, numbering a round dozen, is in
good trim, and he says they will beat the
State.
Mr. T. H. White and Mr. Newton Lewis
will occupy the two cottages soon to be
erected by Jos. A. Walker near Rev. Geo.
Summey's.
L. D. Childs leaves to-morrow for North
Carolina, where he will be absent for a
week or ten days.
Miss Mary Cannon, of Edgefield, is paying
her sister, Mrs. S. M. Davega, an extended
visit.
John Banks and Sam Hood expect to
leave this afternoon for a short trip to the
springs.

Mrs. A. Q. Brice, with her little niece,
Miss Mabel Kitrell, are on a trip to Alabama.

Mr. and Mrs. Langdon McKee, of Columbia,
have been visiting relations here.
Miss Connie Wolfe, of Monroe, N. C., is

Miss Susie Chisolm has been visiting
Miss Addie Robertson at Edgemoor.
Rev. J. P. Knox, of Huntersville,
spent a night in town last week.
Miss Lizzie Martin has been visiting
Miss Bessie McFadden.
J. W. Knox and family have moved
back to the country.
Miss Waring, of Columbia, is visiting at
Mr. F. T. Morgan's.
Miss Nannie Itagsdale was in town on
Monday.
? Awhile woman, named Sallie Deer,
of Beaufort county, is suffering from hydrophobia,
the result of having been bitten
by a mad dog last April.

Swift's Specific cured me of ugly and very
painful boils and risings. I had twenty-three
on my back and nock at one time and a great
many on my body. I took S. S. S., and two
bottlos cured me. This was fiye years ago, and
I have had no boils since.
W. M. Miller, Arlington, Toxas.
W. H. Wight, of Rogers, Ark., a prominent
farmer and stock grower, says that Swift's Specific
cured him of tetter of twenty years'standing.
Of course in that time he had a great
amount of treatment, and says the groat wonder
is that ho did not scratch the flesh from his
bones. S. S. S. cured him quick and perma- .
nently.
The continued use of mercury mixtures
poisons thesystom, causos the bones to decay,
and brings on mercurial rheumatism. The use
of S. S. S. forces impurities from the blood,
gives a good appetite and digestion, and builds
up the whole human frame. Send to the Swift

"Road Carts in endless nnmbor and variety
have flooded the market, but there is only one i
Corbin Cart. It is much lighter than the aver- i
ago cart, and exceedingly simple in construe
tion. Its continuous spring and T steel axle |
appeals to the common sense of buyers."
The Farm Implement News, published in <
New York, says: !
"The lighter vehicles have received considor- '
ation at the hands of Mr. Corbin. Not satisfied
with tho clumsy appearance and intolerable
horse motion on the average road cart, Mr. C. i
has brought out a light, (it weighs 100 pounds)
airy Cart with T axles, and continuous spring,
formed like the letter S, as tho cut fully illustrates."
We now have one of these carts on exhibition,
and will bo pleased to have all who desire
to do so to call and examine it. ,

DOUBTLESS there are many of my renders
who have heard inncli about tho grout
ad vantages of buying for Cash. We have
no hard words for the Cash system of buying
and soiling goods, for two-thirds of our business
is dono in that way ; but while that is tho
case, wo aro opposed to refusing IIONEST,
PROMPT PAYING CREDIT CUSTOMERS
tho accommodations they so richly deserve.
We have seen the time when we were glad to
receive the trade of almost any one, and wo say
wo would he guilty of tho grossest ingratitude
if we did not stand by those who have stood by
us. Of course we do not desire, nor could wo
afford to sell goods to parties on credit who wo
knew were not prompt paying, for thoro is no
use iu allowing debts to remain perpetually on
the ledgor.
Again, you are advisod by tho Cash Store
man to borrow monoy and pay Cash for your
goods. This is a great scheme. What per
cent, do bank and loan associations charge for
monoy? Never less than 10 per cent. Would
you not just as soon pay that percent, tons,
as to tho Idoated bondholder? We would
likely divide that per cent, with you and make
it five. Will vou find a bank or loan association
that will divide with you ? No, wo think
not. They have monoy to loan at a certain
per cent, and thoy get it?it is their business to
get it.
Again, wo are better prepared to conduct an
economical business than any one we know
of?Dry Goods, Grocorios, Millinory and DressMaking
all under one roof and under the personal
supervision of W. C. LATIMER. Each
department has experienced ladies and gentlemen
at its head, and no effort is spared to
please tho public.
Our stock of Clothing is coming in ovory day,
and it is only a matter of a week or so until we
will be prepared to show a stock of Clothing
that will make our competitors tremble like
an aspen. Oh, we have the Clothing that will
make tho dudo yawn. Tho prices are very
low and the stylos are exceptionally fine. Call
and examine them.
Mr W. C. LATIMER, the buyer for tho firm,
will start for tho Northern markets between
the FIRST AND EIGHTH OF SEPTEMBER,
and it is not too much to expect that ho will
fully come up to his past efforts in the selection
of tho Novelties of tho day, for which his

LATIMEIt will be assisted in buying the Dross
Goods and Trimmings by Miss ELEANOR
SHIRES, whose taste and ability is too well
known to require any endorsement.
Miss LIZZIE ANTHONY, whoso ability
and taste is only equalled by that of Miss
Shires, will assist in buying the Millinery,
which is a sufficient guarantee that our stock
will bo first class and of the latest styles.
Now we would have it understood that wo
propose to conduct a live, aggressive business
in every detail, handling only the very best
goods, and under no circumstances do we propose
to be undersold. Remember this, for wo
mean to stand by our customers in oyory particular.
PROMPT PAYMENT IS ESSENTIAL TO
A GOOD CREDIT, and a good credit is worth
money to you at the BAZAAR.
We haye only one prico, and that the lowest,
and we say that we will sell goods as low as
they can be retailed anywliero in the United
States. Remember this?wo mean it.
We repeat the announcement that wo made
in the Spring that we will furnish conveyance
from the Charleston, Cincinnati and Chicago

provided wo aro previously notified by postal

Our business of the past season has been full

that our efforts have been fully appreciated
by our numerous customers, and that each

was disposed of. These trunks aro O. K. and
if you noed anything in this lino, now is your
opportunity to got it. Thoy won't bo long

NONE HAVE BEEN DISAPPOINTED.
No ono who has visited our storo can understand
how it is that wo aro odoring such prices.
Rut they do not stand long in such amazement
before they are willing to buy such goods as
they may want, regardless of how we came by
them. Thoy are being hauled off in
Carriages, Phaetons, Buggies, Road
Carts and Wagons,
And even in Wheelbarrows, and in tho arms
of men, women and children.
Dry fioods of ovory description to select
from, with prieos lower than over before is tho
cause of this great jamb.
Remember that theso goods must, will and
shall bo sold, even though it has to be done
under tho voice of the heartless auctioneer.
Wo carry ovor nothing through tho winter, and
of all tho opportunities it has yet been your
good luck to encounter, this is the grandest.
The "Racket" of the Past will Evolve
into a Rumbling Noise,
And its bargains will bo forced into the homes

Avail yourselves of this opportunity and lay

It might bo well to remind you of our stock

W1IITK LEAD.
WE havo )>oon advertising the Phomix
Brand of Wliito Lead quite extensively
recently, and the center shots that havo been

its indispensability in securing the best rosults,
in view of cxisiting notions that have
been worked up within the past few years witli
regard to less valuable substitutes, wo have
deemed it advisable, from time to time, to put
in a few licks in its behalf straight from the
shoulder. This is the only apology for advertising
the merits of a paint that stands among
paints like unalloyed gold stands among the
metals.

NKW EXTKItPRISK!!
Our Magic City Demands a One
Price C'a,sli Store, and
We have Decided
to Open It.
ON SEPTEMBER 1GTII wo will make a
change in our business, and desire to express
our grateful appreciation of the very
kind patronage bestowed upon our Houso in
the past, and in making this change it is done
for the benefit of the poople as well as ourselves.
To save money is the wish of every porson,
but to do this they must have the cash to pay
down for what goods they buy. Now, at the
beginning, wo do not doubt the erodit of any
one, but our business in the future will be
conducted on a strictly cash basis. Everybody
will be treated alike. *
What hits the credit svstem done for our
country? There is no use for us to answer
this question, as it is known by all. Ask yourselves
the question where can goods be bought
the cheapest?from a store that sells on credit
or one thatsolls exclusively for cash? Having
no bad debts for you to help to pay, that is the
whole business. What aro the Alliance people
doing? Head a few words taken from President
Stackhouse's address before the State
Alliance Assembled at Columbia in July.
"I may bo pardoned for saying that every
feature that savors of the credit system should
be excluded. The abuse of the credit system
is an evil of such magnitude as to demand its
abandonment. Our efforts thus far have boon
directed to the improvement of this system,
and these efforts, I am satisfied, aro mutually
beneficial to both the debtor and creditor classes.
But in the establishment of the State agency,
which is designed to be a permanent fixture,
it should be done on a correct system, the only
correct system, a cash system."
That is the way to talk it. Our people have
not been accustomed to paying cash for their
goods, and it might be a little odd for some at
the beginning; but all they will have to do is to
give it a trial and they will never want to go
back to the old crodit way.
Where is a family that can't live on much
less, when they pay cash down for everything
thev buy, and why not adopt that rule, to buy
nothing unless you pay the money down, and
you aresure ofsuccess. This wonderful revolution
will bo of more value than dollars. It is a
revolution in favor of the poor, of the needy, of
the well-to-do, and the rich, of all kinds and
conditions of men.
We do not expoct to confine ourselves to any
particular lino of goods, and will sell all at their
cash value, thoreby saving the purchasers
money.
This is an ago of progress, and the cash system
we believe to bo the true basis of all
business.
The bargains wo will olfor will bo a surpriso
to the closest buyers. Just think back ten
years ago, what if our farmers would have paid
cash for every dollar's worth they bought up to
this time, this would have been a glorious
country; but how do things stand to-day ?
A great many will say, at this late day, how
can we pay cash when wo have no money ?
Ah ! but things have changed in that way, at
least. What are the two Banks and Building
and Loan Associations established in Rock
Hill for? Why, nothing else but to loan monoy
; and when you have it, make it go just as far
as you possibly can. It makes 110 difference to
you where you buy your goods, so you get what
you want, and at the right prices. But to do
this, you must have that great lever in hand,
"THE ALMIGHTY DOLLAR." AfterSEPTEMBKR
14TH, NOTHING WILL BE
CHARGED TO ANY ONE. Our Store will
be closed on Monday and Tuesday, SEPTEMBER
Kith and 17th, in order to mark down our
stock.
THE MILLINERY DEPARTMENT will
be continued under the able management of
Miss ELLA TOLLINGER, with increased as
sistance and a much larger and varied assortment
of all tho latest designs and fashions.
This is a plain statement of facts, brieily outlined,
showing tho course and policy by which
the new business will bo conductou. We will
have buyers in Baltimore, Philadelphia and
Now York, who will always be on the lookout
for bargains, and when any article is going below
its value, they have instructions to take
them in for us.
Remember, all goods will bo marked in plain
figures.
We will havo but one price and that the
lowest.
