The Weather and the Crops.?The
weather crop bulletin, issued last Sunday
by the signal office at Washington, says:
"The weather during the week has been
especially favorable for harvesting and
farm work in the Northwest. The wheat
harvest progressed rapidly in the central
and northern portions of Dakota and Minnesota,
from which region the reports indicate
that the damage to the wheat crop
from the frosts of last week was largely
over estimated, mis morning s repon
indicates that favorable harvest weather
will continue in that section during the
early part of the week.
In the northern portions of the corn belt
the weather was favorable, but the growth
of the plant was retarded by the low temperature.
Very light frosts occurred in
Michigan and Northern Illinois on the
22d, probably causing no injury to the
crops. Reports from Arkansas, Kentucky, ,
Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina,
indicate that the weather for the >
week has been favorable to all crops."
MERE-MENTION.
The cotton crop of Texas, as estimated
by the Galveston News, will be 1,500,000
bales, with the possibility of an increase
of 25 per cent. On Thursday five
steamers landed in New York with 3,116 |
steerage passengers, a number very large
for this season. The list of deaths
from yellow fever at Jacksonville, so far, (
shows that nearly all the patients were i
hard-drinkers, and in four of the deaths
the parties were known to have been
on sprees just prior to taking the dis- i
ease. The business failures last week
number for the United States 187, Canada i
27; a total of 214 against 219 the previous
week.

THREE EBEE8S FDR TIE S. Y. RACKET!"
Our Arrangements are all Made for the
Winter Campaign.
"y^E have just returned from the great Metropolis
of the United StateB, where we went
last week to settle up our Spring and Summer
business and make arrangements for the coming
Fall and Winter, all of which was satisfactorily
accomplished and pleasantly disposed of.
We are better prepared to do business now
than ever, for the reason that we are better
acquainted with our New York Agency and
it is more familiar with our territory and
our capabilities to handle iirst-class merchandise.
Wo were told that "all things considered,
our showing was second to none!"
Since we have been to New York and made
oar arrangements for the Fall business, we
will, as we have previously intimated, show
somebody where Uncle Toney hid his traditional
wedge. Just as we said in the outset,
"We have come to stay !'* And we might add,
the emphatic, boasting language, of Colonel
Patrick Ferguson, contained in a dispatch to
Cornwallis, in speaking of the natural position
h? hart chnsnn on Fine's Mountain. Drenara
tory to the battle on that historic spot, but
for the profanity contained in that declaration.
We would not quote his words because of their
profanity, nor in the same boasting, profane
spirit that it came from him, but only to impress
upon our many friends our natural advantages
in buying and selling goods, and to
give them to understand that we are going to
continue to conduct a live, aggressive business
in eyery detail; leading in every instance and
following in none.
We never have two prices for goods. Wesell
the same articles to different individuals at the
same uniformly low price. When have any
of you ever come into our store and found
our selling price marked in letters? You never
have. We do not boast of our conscience,
but we mark our goods uniformly low, in
plain figures, and let 'em go. Suppose we did
mark our goods in letters and you would want
a Hat, a Corset, or an Umbrella, and you
would come to the Racket Store and find it
marked thus: EW
BOR,
What conclusion would you come to on conaiHan'nrr
Hio funn nf Mii<J murk? Would VOU
| *?VW w. ? ? ?
tLink, "being as it was you, this mark would
beignored?" Well,yes,thatis justaboutwhat
you would persuade yourself to believe! We
made our rules in the outset, and to our knowledge,
they have never_^een broken. Why?
Because our goods are /narked so low that it
is next to impossible to'sell cheaper. In the
past few months we have heard it said often,
?
that business is overdone in Yorkville. We
do not agree with the idea. How many country
stores have we in close proximity to Yorkville
? We mark our goods singly so low that
it is impossible for us to make reductions on
a sale of a dozen artices of a kind?a strictly
retail business. We can see no reason why
a poor man should not buy his goods in the
Dry Goods line, in small quantities, just as
cheap as tho rich man who buys in larger
quantities. It costs us no more to sell goods
in small quantities than in large quantities and
the per cent is just the same.
By the loth of September, we expect*to
be able to show you a stock of goods at such
prices that will shako this county from center
to circumference, and with a competent corps
of affable clerks we are going to sell our share
of the goods sold in this market. So look out!
You should also bear in mind that Dr. Cartwright,
the dentist, can at all times be found
either at his office or the Racket Store, and it
is verv essential that tho teeth be properly cared
" "
for and looked after at the proper time. Dr.
Cartwright offers his services to the public at
reasonable prices with satisfaction guaranteed.
Call and have your teeth examined.
We have in stock now a large lot of tine
Silk Umbrellas. These Goods were bought
in a job lot, and we are offering them at
slaughtered prices. The reason why we can
sell these goods so cheap is this: We bought
- *? a
very large quantity at very close figures, for
spot cash, and we are giving you the advantage
of our good luck and inside figures.
We now have three experienced Dry Goods
Clerks in our employ who kno\y what straight
goods cost, and they, at the incoming of almost
every bill, seem to be amazed at the marvelously
low prices at which they are marked. They
make such exclamations as "Oh! Mr. Rouss
lias certainly made a mistake; they are too
cheap?mark them up a little in order to be on
the safe side." We do not pretend to run that
end of the line, but we mark our goods from
the bill and at very close figures at that, and
they sell themselves.
We have just received another lotofsplen-j
.
did Buggy Whips. These whips are of the
very best quality and are sold at about half the
usual price.
Our Laundry Soap has no superior, and we i
are selling it at 4 cents per pound. Remember |
that savings make large accumulations.

Some Facts Worth Knowing.
"To live is to do?what must be done.
To work and be true, for work is soon done."
LIFE is too short for us to dwell on long profits
and old methods of business. We claim
to lead?others follow. Who reduced the price
of Coffee some months ago from 4 to 5 lbs. for
31.00? Who is first now to offer 5J lbs for 31.00?
(See below.) Who, in spite of the high prices of
Sugar two weeks ago, refused to advance the
price above for Granulated? It was retailing
in New York City at the time at 10 cents,
and now, commencing to-(lay, we offer for
hard pan cash for one week only, 11 pounds
of Granulated Sugar and 5i pounds of first class
Coffee for 32.00. We also claim rock bottom
prices on every thing, and our stock is the most
general assortment in the up country.
pSS* One hundred years ago the population of
the United States "was 3,000,000to day it is
60,000,000. Three years ago our business was
about 315,000; to-day it is estimated at 350,000.
Fair dea}ingrtenergy and low prices made by
the use of spot cash with purchases, made this
increase of business.
The salary of the President of the United
States is 350,000; but W. 11. M. &Co., sell imported
English-made Crockery in all shapes
imaginable for less than 25 per cent. Lamp
Goods?Parlor and Library Lamps a specialty.
All kinds of Lamp Fixtures.
Georgo Washington, it is said, never told
a lie . But W. B. M. & Co. will give you
11 pounds Granulatod Sugar and 5i pounds of
good Coffee for 31.00 each. Depend on it.
The C., C. tfc C. R. R. trains will reach
Yorkvillo about September 1st, and we offer
now the best 4-inch neart Shingle on the market.
Prices as low as the lowest?cash or credit?no
matter to us. Mrs. G. B. Miller's Snuff
makes a big lead.
pS" The loss on the salo of 310.00 worth of
Granulatod Sugar at 11 pounds for 31.00, would
amount, in one hundred years, at 10 per cent.,
to 313,000.00. We sell the purest Country Lard,
as well as cotton seed, made. Our Flour, Molasses
and other eatables are just what we tell
vou they are, or your money will be refunded.
Magnolia Hams are the sweetest.

spared to furnish Builders' Hardware and
Carpenters' tools to build this entire country.

PURE CASTOR OIL.
As a medicine, castor oil is indispensable.
It is not good for toothache, but taken all in
all, it is the most valuable medicine that can be
kept in the house. It has often been remarked
by observing old people that this medicine is
not always attended with as uniformly good
results, under same conditions, as formerly.
The reason is, that if you are not careful, you
are more apt to buy an impure than the pure
article. Baker's is a production you can swear
by, and itiss M only by MAY <fc MAY.
