is a young man of ability and bids fair to
take a high stand in his calling. It is a
marked sign of moral progress to see the
zeal with which the middle aged and
young men of his church do their part of
the work. We never have had any respect
for a religion that riveted a church
member to his seat or sealed his lips during
divine service. In mission and Sunday-school
work we venture to say that
the vicinity of Abingdon creek is second
to none in the State.
The railroad question is still being agitated.
The engineer corps is at Bethlehem
church, 7b miles this side of Union,
Courthouse. Where they will strike the
main line of the Charleston, Cincinnati
and Chicago Railroad is not within our
power to tell at present. Hickory Grove
is a popular point with many of our people,
and it is hoped by many that Black's
will be the place. If distance has anything
to do with it the odds are decidedly
in favor of Hickory Grove. But if the
development of the immense water power
nn TlrAaH i>lwr is a fantnr. "Black's will
win the prize. ' Sigma.

NOTES FROM CLOVER.
Clover, July 30.?On Wednesday last
the Presbyterian Sunday-school Convention
of Bethel Presbytery met in the church
at this place. Ten ministers and twentyeight
delegates were enrolled. Rev. J. S.
White, of Rock Hill, was elected moderator,
and Mr. Craig, of Blackstocks, secretary.
It was a pleasant meeting and we
hope a profitable one. It adjourned Friday
at 11 o'clock A. M.
At 3 o'clock on Friday evening the farmers
of this community met in the academy
building for the purpose of hearing
an address by Mr. J. J\ Smith, organizer
of the Farmers' Alliance. He succeeded
in organizing an Alliance with nineteen
members.
At 11 o'clock on Saturday preaching services
commenced in the Presbyterian
church preparatory to communion service
on Sunday. Rev. T. R. English, of Yorkville,
was with us during the meeting and
preached several powerful sermons.

* PURE CASTOR OIL.
3 As a medicine, castor oil is indispensable,
y It is not good for toothache, but taken all in

by observing old people that this medicine is
_ not always attended with as uniformly good

The reason is, that if you are not careful, you

! "N. Y. RACKET, STORE."
\
Hints and Thoughts for Deliberate
Consideration.
THE FUTURE WILL REVEAL LIGHT.
A Good time is Coming in the Sweet
Bye-and-Bye.
WE WANT TO BUY ONE THOUSAND CHICKENS
For which we Will Pay the Highest Market
Prices in Goods.
^"^WING to unavoidable absence on last
Monday it was impossible for us to change our
advertisement last week. We were in Charlotte,
N. C., in attendance of the semi-annual
meeting of the Southern Racket Store Aasociantion,
or Low Price League, preparatory
to the Fall Trade.
It is the intention of the management to so
far reduce the Racket Stock by the 15th of
this month as to enable it to lay hi one of the.
largest stocks of Dry Goods, Notions, Boots
and Shoes, Hats and Caps, Millinery, Carpets,
Rugs, Hardware, Tinware and everything you
could expect to find in a store of our kind.
We have been so much encouraged by the
results of our efforts of the past few months
that we have determined to come into the
mercantile arena this Fall, under the low
price banner, shielded with good goods and
armed with the one price spear, and that the
lowest, and fight the war till it is over.
No one has been more surprised than ourselves
at the success of the New York Racket
Store. It was only intended from the first
to acquaint the people of York county with
the Racket system of buying and selling merchandise
preparatory to the Fall trade.
With this hint of what we expect to do we
will branch off on something we are doing
now.
We would call ycrur attention to the fact
that we have a very large stock of LAUNDRY
SOAP which we are selling at FOUR CENTS
per pound. This Soap is put up in bars weighing
ONE POUND AND A QUARTER and
it sold at the Racket at 5 cents per bar.
Blueing can be bought at the Racket at TWO
CENTS PER BOX!
We can beat the world on MATCHES.
"The Crown Parlor Matches" are what we are
handling and wei are selling three boxes, or
six hundred matches, for five cents. One box
two cents !
Friends, we want you to consider your own
interests. We beg and implore of you not to
buy gbods on credit. In the first place you
can't afford to pay credit prices on the absolute
necessaries of life. There is no merchant living
doing business on the credit system who
can compete with a cash business in prices.
This is a positive assertion and literally true.
No merchant can afford to put you on his
books and carry the account for ten days without
considering the possibilities and probabilities
of losing the entire debt. Who has to
pay this debt? Why the cash customer, as a
matter of course. Every dollar's worth of merchandise
bought through the credit system is
I i_ H- - 1 1 - 1.1a... +1. a
a curst' tu iiiu cuniuuiur uiiu a uiuw <u kuo j/iwoperity
of our now almost ruined country.
There are a great many men, as all of us
know, who are constitutionally opposed to
paying honest debts, and year after year appeal
to the "dear people'' for their confidence
and support. Are these men representative
men of this grand old county of ours? Goto
! any merchant in the county who has been in
, business any length of time and taken peep
at the "Black List!" We know you will be
surprised! Who pays this class of debts ?
Why the cash buyers and the credit buyers
who do pay. The credit system crushes men
I who have honest intentions; it encourges dishonesty;
it deprives hundreds of children
every year even of a primary education; it
crushes the spirit of many a happy mother;
it drives men to despair?to strong drink and
ofttimes to eternity. Men, for Heaven's sake
buy for Cash. For the sake of your families
buy for Cash. For .the, oause of the Christian
religion buy for Cash. No matter where you
buy or from whom, get all you can for your
hi. d earned money. You are under no obligations
to buy goods from us simply because
wo have knocked the cupola off of prices.
Wait and watch us.
We will buy all the CHICKENS that are
brought to this market, and we will pay
the highest market price in goods. We will
sell these chickens at just-what they cost us.
It will save parties from walking the streets,
besides enabling them to find ready sale at
good prices.
We have a splendid Curry-comb for 5 cents.
Another lot of splendid Buggy Whips to arrive
in a few days.
We don't intend to keep our candle under a
hamper basket, but through these columns
we will give you light week after week.
Wo submit to you for consideration a few
J prices which may bo of interest to parties who
have not had the opportunity to visit our establishment:
