A Card from Senator Black.
Black's, S. C., April 21,1888.
To My Friends in York County: Having entered
into a business arrangement which will necessitate
my absence, for the greater part of my
time, from the county, and thus prevent me
from making a canvass of the county, I feel
that I would be doing an injustice to you as
well as to myself, to allow my name to be placed
in nomination as a candidate for the Senate in
the next election.
I have delayed making this announcement,
hoping that I might find some way to comply
with the wishes of those who have brought my
name forward. >
To you who have been so kind to me in the
past, and who have honored me with your con
naenceana support, x oegpuunciy lunvikuumedgeyny
warmest gratitude, and to say that my
heart will always be with you, and my humble
abilities and services are yours in any effort
that will advance the interests of York county.
Respectfully, J. G. Black.

KUYKENDAL'S SPECIALS.
A Composition on Repeaters.
History repeats itself. The seasons repeat
themselves. The sun and moon are the most
constant and oldest repeaters in existence.
The fowls of the air, the fishes of the sea, and
the beasts of the field, repeat by nature the
habits and instincts that stamped their species
at creation. Thoughts, fashions, ideas, arts,
and even inventions are lost in the whirl of
time and pop up again like a comet and are
hailed as something new and so on. This
will excuse us for repeating in substance what
we have said before, namely, that consumers
of Paint must not iose sight of the fact that
1 gallon of the Longman <fe Martinez Paint
will .cover as much surface as 2 gallons of
ready mixed paint, make an infinitely better
job at a saving of from 15 to 25 per cent, over
the best of slop or ready mixed paints, and is
covered by an iron ciaa guarantee ui me /m?z*ufacturers
; not the party who sells it. We can
malce this proposition plain to any one who
can reason. Longman <fc Martinez Paints sold

DO you use KUYKENDAL'S PERFECT
BAKING POWDER? If not, wbv not?
On account of its purity, the wholesoineness of
its ingredients, its economy and great raising
power, and the reasonable*price at which it is
sold, there is no reason why yen .should not
use it, if you use Baking Powder at all. On
the other hand you should scrupulously avoid
the use of Baking Powders that depend for
their leavening properties on Alum, Ammonia
and Phosphate of Lime, as these salts are
known to be injurious to the health when taken
into the stomach daily.

We all agree, that all things being equal, it is

urge our claims to your patronage
on the ground that the price of the Perfect Baking

sold, allowing a reasonable amount of profit,
and further, vastly to the credit of the Perfect
Baking Powder, is its absolute
Purity and Healthfulness,
Which gives the consumer in its use, the enjoyment
of complete protection against the
fidrnicious and poisonous adulterations found
n so many of the Baking Powders sold in the
markets. The Perfect Baking Powder is put
up in i, i and 1 pound cans, and is retailed at 25,

CARE OF WATCHES.
THEY SHOULD BE CLEANED AND OILED
ANNUALLY.
AN erroneous idea prevails with many persons
that a watch should be allowed to
"run 'til it stops," as the saying goes. This is a
grave mistake, and many tine watches are actually
ruined and worn out in a few years through
the prevalence of this groundless notion. In
what other piece of machinery do you expect
to lind perpetual motion ? Of course the great
watch factories of the day, for the sake of reputation
for their watches, use every precaution
in hardening the parts and in securing the
best lubricating material known to scientific
experience, and even with this care they are
only willing to "warrant the watch for 12
montns." i
Again, I will add in connection with these j
timely remarks, that the so-called "Dust-proof |
watch cases" are not dust proof against time; j
dust will penetrate where air cannot. Just so, I
to illustrate, with the "burglar proof safes" of j
to-day?the burglar advances with the necessi- |
tv of the times! If yoh would put a burglar i
down at a "burglar-proof safe" for a few hours
to work at his leisure, as the dust does, you
would find that it would not take him from
Saturday night till Monday morning to "crack
| a safe." Give the burglar time and he will
I accomplish his end ; .just so with the dust,
j Repair work a specialty.
