except Andy Deas, Jane and Fanny Bar- i
rett, all white, who were recommitted to j
jail, in default of bail, to stand their trial
at the next term of the upper court. Mr.
Blackmon testified to seeing the parties
named, in the lot, shortly before he was assaulted,
which, we understand, was the !
only evidence against them developed at
the preliminary investigation. Mr. Black- 1
mon also stated that as much as $2,000 in <
coin was taken from his safe the night of '
the murderous assault upon him. The <
loss was not discovered until a few days ;
ago?after Mr. Blackmon had sufficiently
recovered from his injuries to examine ;
the contents of his safe. There were two
bags of money in the safe, one containing .
$4,000 and the. other $2,000, and strange to ;
say, the $2,000 stolen was taken from the '
bag containing $4,000.
? In Pickens county, last week, within .
a few miles of where Waldrop, the white <
man, was hanged by a mob of negroes, a ;
* negro was arrested for an attempt to com- ;
rait the same crime for which waidrop ;
died. His intended victim was a white J
woman. In many similar cases in this ]
State in the past, summary punishment ]
has followed tne capture of the assailant, j
But it was not so this time. There was '
talk of lynching, but the negro was arrest- '
ed and lodged safely in jail. (
? The Rev. W. D. Shaw, a prominent v
Baptist minister of Johnston, Edgefield
county, and a convert to the sanctification :
doctrine, whose mind has been unbalanced
of late by religious enthusiasm, attempted l
to commit suicide last Friday evening. ]
While his wife was absent he procured a
tub of water and, bending over it, plunged '
a knife into his throat on the right side.
A colored man who lives in the yard gave
the alarm and called a doctor. Mr. Shaw's wound
is severe but not necessarily fatal. *
? Judge Aldrich says he has never felt 1
better during the past ten years than at
* present. This is discouraging news to the
gentlemen who have been waiting irapatiently
for the retirement of the old veteran,
but nevertheless they will have to i
grin and bear it, as he evidently has not t
the faintest idea of resigning. The story <
of his intended resignation originated by
a remark he made in the presence of a "
newspaper man that his present gown .
would last as long as he would need it.

a jury on Tuesday, the 3d instant. They (
were engaged on the case from 12 M. to 7 ?
P. M. After the jury had announced that .
they had agreed, they demanded their pay 1
before they would publish. The justice
sustained the demand, and said the plaint- 1
iff must pay up, as he had demanded the
jury, but the plaintiff was gone, and his J
attorney declined to represent him any *
further. The defendants not knowing
what the verdict was, refused to pay for it, a
and it looked like the secret was not going s
to be divulged, when one of the jury, Earl r
P. Taylor, said, to stop -the racket, he J
would pay the jury himself, and for the 1
foreman, Mr. Tom Taylor, to publish the ?
verdict. The foreman demurred and said <_
he wanted the money first. It was promptly
handed over. The verdict was for the
defendants.?Pickens Sentinel.
