? On the afternoon of the 26th ultimo,
George S. Turner, owner of the Valley
l Falls Cotton Factory, in Spartanburg counf
ty, shot and killed a German employe
named Julius Metzkia, as is alleged, in
consequence of a ipisunderstandingon settlement.
Metzkia was a Knight of Labor
sympathiser, and had been discharged by
Turner. After the killing Turner fled to
North Carolina, but was arrested at Tryon
on the evening of the 4th and returned
with his captors to Spartanburg without a
requisition, and was lodged in jail. He
claims to have acted in self defense, and
gives as his reason for leaving home that
he feared violence from a mob of Knights
of Labor who had threatened to lynch
him.

A PLEASANT PICNIC.
McConnellsville, July 9.?A picnic
was given on last Friday to the children
of the Olivet school, Miss Bessie Castles
teacher. Quite early in the day a large
crowd could be seen gathered in the beautiful
grove near the church. Many an
ticipated words of eloquence from some of
our eminent politicians, but as none favored
us with their presence, we were debarred
this exalted privilege. In consequence
of the absence of speakers, dinner,
which is much more appeasing to a ravenous
appetite, was announced at an early
hour. The table was filled with the choicest
viands the cul'rary art could provide,
and the ample abundance of the splendid
repast fully satisfied the desires or the inner
man. The Blairsville brass band
furnished music for the occasion, which
lent quite a charm to the enjoyment of
the day. Old as well as young seemed to
participate alike in the exhilarations of
the occasion, and all-in-all the day was
quite an enjoyable one indeed.
We cannot find words sufficiently adequate
to eulogize the generous hearted
people of Olivet and its vicinity. For
them we solicit long life, happiness and
prosperity. Conge.

LIFE INSURANCE.
KNIGHTS OF HONOR MUTUAL PLAN.
NO argument is needed in favor of the principle
of life insurance. No honorable
man, tne head ofa family, will hesitate to make
provision for those whom Providence has
placed under his care and protection. No safer
or cheaper system is presented than that offered
by the order of Knights of Honor, which
was organized to furnish life insurance at the
actual cost, assessments to be made only when
necessary to pay death losses. The assessment
rate is fixed and does not change during the
life of a member, and assessments are called
not oftener than once a month. Benefit Certificates
are issued in sums of $1,000 and $2,000 and
the benefit is promptly paid, without resort to
litigation, on satisfactory proof of the death of
the assured. This great order has done a grand
work as a beneficiary society, and desiring to
extend its usefulness in this community, Home
Relief Lodge, of Yorkville, has reduced its fees
for admission to the minimum amount, while
a regular attendance upon lodge meetings is
not obligatory. Persons outside of town can
be members of the Lodge without any inconvenience
to themselves and yet derive all the
benefits of the order. Full information for
gaining admission to membership will be
cheerfully furnished on application to
