The Trade Outlook.?R. G. Dun &
C-o's. trade review for the week ending
Saturday, May 21, says: The most impor1
tant news of the week, if confirmed, is
that the Inter-State Commission will revoke
all temporary suspension of the short
haul clause terminating July 1. This
statement seems credible only because it
accords with the spirit of the letter just
published by the Commission, giving reasons
for refusing suspensions, and holding '
that the injury to existing business is no 1
reason for setting aside the law. Only in
exceptional cases will it interfere. The
revolution in business must, therefore, 1
progress until the full effects have been '
realized. Some of them are seen in coni
tracts taken by the Canadian Pacific to
?i an^
Luuve oumaiu cue wuui ui v^amuiuia auu
ten million [pounds of sugar and a marked
revival of shipments around the Horn. i
Others appear in the decline of trade at i
larger centres of distribution and manu- ,
facture, and an increase of distribution at
smaller towns, with the up-springing of
new manufacturing works at many localities.
For twenty-five years the railroads
have been annihilating the barriers of dis\
tance. The new law tends to restore the I
old barriers and to put sections, cities and
towns farther away from each other.
Closely connected are numerous labor
troubles, most of which grow out of narrowed
fields for the distribution of produc-y
tion.
Local reports are still generally eficonr
aging, witn no instance of unusual delay
in collections. Where business is deemed
dull, it is in every case pronounced larger
than rt the same time last year.
Business failures occurring throughout
the country during the last week number
for the United States 152, Canada 28; total,
180, against 167 last week and 182 the week
Rrevious. Failures in the South are very
ght, and other sections of the country are
below the average except in the Pacific ;
Statesand Canada, where casualties are ,
a*
on me increase.
? A Sunday train will be run on the
Greenville and Laurens road in a short 1
time.

' There's No Place Like Home,"
Sang a homeless poet, and the refrain touched
a chord in every heart and has come echoing
down the passing years. Home, though ever
so humble, to be made happy and attractive ,
must be adorned, if only by a clinging vine at ,
the door. The more pretentious domicils must
be more elaborately embelished, and to do this,
there is no factor so potent as paint. Read between
the lines and you will seethed the foregoing
lias been written to call your attention to
the celebrated Pure Prepared Paints manufactured
by Longman A Martinez. Millions of
pounds of this Paint make beautiful, inviting
and durable thousands of houses, from the
humblest to the most palatial, all over this great

THE-CYCLONE EXTINGUISHER.
Tirzah, S. C., March 10, 1887.
Mkssrs. Jefferys & Hoke, Gents:
THE. Cyclone Spark Extinguisher put on my
engine a few months ago is giving entire
satisfaction. Before it was put on, my ginhouse
several times caught fire from sparks, so
I had to quit running while the wind was blowing
in the direction of the gin-house. Now I
can gin and saw with perfect safety, no matter
which way the wind blows. Haven'tseen a live
spark from the engine since I have been using it.
And another good thing about it is, it can't wear
= or burn out. Will last as long as the engine. I
think it a great invention, and wouldn't take
double the cost of mine if it was so I couldn't
- get another one. I think you ought to reduce
the present high rate of insurance on gin-houses
where these extinguishers are used on the engines,
or, at least, recommend such to the companies
you represent, because I see no risk
whatever from the engine.
Very respectfully,
. H.UJN JK 1 i>l ASaiJ. I.

It is a distiller and concentrates and keeps the
