~ * ? At the night service, the rector, Rev. E. N Joyner, officiated, and delivered a most appropriate sermon. The church was tastefully decorated with flowers and evergreens. Notable among the decorations waS that of the beautiful marble tablet ic memory of the late Rev. Roberts P. Johnson, who so faithfully and acceptably served this parish for thirteen years. Saturday's Charlotte papers contained an account of an outrageous assault on a colored girl nine years of age, an employee ol the white graded school in that city, committed by a colored man, an employee in the same institution, who at once fled. Mr. E. B. Rock, the manager of the Western Union Telegraph Company at this place, had just read the account when a colored man passed his office who filled the description as contained in the papers. He at once notified the town marshal, and in pnmniinv with a DOSSe, went immediately in search of the suspected person. He was overtaken, arrested and placed in the guardhouse. Notice of the arrest was at once telegraphed to the Charlotte authorities, and Mr. Wm. Stitt, chief of the Charlotte police, came on the first train and identified the negro and returned with him to Charlotte. When arrested he gave his name as John Williams, but after being identified, he said his name is Columbus Jeter, and that he is originally from Union county in this State. He also confessed to having served a term in the South Carolina penitentiary. While on his way under arrest to the guardhouse, an old negro woman begged that he be given a trial before being hanged. She was informed that he was a North Carolina prisoner,when she at once replied : "He kin get justice dar," aud she went her way apparently satisfied.. The residence of Mr. W. B. Thomasson, three miles east of this place, narrowly escaped being destroyed by fire on Wednesday last. Mr. W. H. Cowan, who was in a field near by, discovered smoke issuing from the doors and win dows of the building and called to nis assistance some colored men who assisted him in breaking open the door and subduing the flames, which had already destroyed some of the furniture. But for the Erovidential discovery, the house would ave been burnt. Mr. Thomasson's family were absent from home visiting at a neighbor's. Mr. C. B. Betts, who has been employed by W. L. Roddey & Co. as a salesman for the pa&t five years, left on Saturday for the Fishing Creek cotton factory, in Chester .county. He will take charge of the?ompany's store at that place. oil, the four-year old son of Mr. ^Samuel L. Reid, of this place, fell from a ladder, last Wednesday evening, and fractured his leg. The little fellow suffered considerable pain, but is now doing well. Col. W. H. Kirby, who has the contract for grading the Charleston, Cincinnati and Chicago railroad from Yorkville to a point twenty-five miles this side of Camden, is now here with his family. He has opened an office with Mr. John S. Moore as his book-keeper. Col. Kirby will commence work at some point on his contract within a few days. 1?The Catawba Rifles, of this place, have decided to visit Charleston on the 26th instant, on the occasion of the unveiling of the Calhoun monument. the vestry election of the Episcopal Church yesterday, the following were elected: Senior Warden, Cad. Editor of the Enquirer: Please grant me space in your columns to say to the people of Yorkville and neighborhood, that there will be a meeting on' Wednesday night, ISth instant, at 8 o'clock, in the Presbyterian church, in -the interest of National Reform. Rev. Wra. Weir, District Secretary, and Mr. John Alexander, of Philadelphia, will be present. National Reform is something new to our people, and the question is asked on all sides: "What is National Reform ?" The gentlemen above mentioned represent an association of eminent Christian workers in the Northern and Western States, whose headquarters are in the city of Philadelphia. They are seeking to unite and crystalize the sentiment ol our Christian people, mainly on the following great principles: 1st. The recognition of Jesus Christ .as supreme ruler of nations. 2d. The retention of the Bible in our public schools. 3d. To secure the Sabbath to our nation. 4th. The granting of divorce on ScriptV ural grounds. 5th. Purification of our politics. 6th. Abolition of the saloon. This is the first time that the agents ol this Association have ever visited our section. They desire to secure the moral support of our people in the hand to hand conflict that is going on throughout the Union over these great principles. AN ORDINANCE Forbidding the running at large of unlicensed dogs on the streets of Yorkville, S. C., and B providing a license for the same. E IT ORDAINED, by the Town Council of Yorkville, S. C., and by the authority qf the same: 1. That it shall not be lawful for any unlicensed dog to run at large on the streets of Yorkville, Sonth Carolina. 2. That the owners of dogs residing within the incorporate limits ol the town of Yorkville, desirous qfJiaving their dogs privileged to run at large on the streets, may apply to the Treasurer of the Council for a license in that behalf; and the Treasurer shall, upon payment of TWO DOLLARS by the applicant for each dog, furnish to the applicant a leather collar, with a numbered tag attached, for each dog, if the condition of each dog be such as, in the judgment of the Treasurer or the Town Council, will warrant its running at large on the streets. 3. That it shall be the duty of the Town Marshal to capture any and every dog found running at large on the streets of Yorkville, not having on the collar and tag provided for by this Ordinance, and to take such dog to the Treasurer ; and it is hereby made the duty of the Treasurer to see that the owner (if the name of the owner can be ascertained) have notice of the capture of such dog, and to release the dog to the owner upon the payment of one dollar; Provided, That if the owner fail to secure the release of the dog, by payment of the said sum witKin fan imnru aftcxv nnHno ffiA Troflflllffir shall instruct the Marshal to sell the dog, and the Marshal shall be in duty bound to observe and carry out such instructions, first posting notice of the sale on the Court House door, at least ten hours in advance of the sale, and offering the dog for sale on any day (Sundays excepted) between the hours of 10 A.
