base act of injuring the little child, he raised
his hand to heaven and said*"No!" His
own testimony was the only material evidence
in his favor. His counsel, in their arguments,
dwelt at considerable length upon
the medical testimony as to the possibility
of an accidental injury to the child, and to
the absence of any conceivable object for the
commission of the alleged crime by the defendant.
The counsel for the State made a strong
presentation of their side of the case. The
solicitor asserted that the injury to the child
was produced either by the mother or the
defendant, and maternal feelings would not
have inclined or permitted such cruelty by
the former. The Judge finished his charge
about9 o'clockP. M., when the jury retired,
and an hour and a half later returned a verdict
of not guilty.
The Court was engaged on Saturday
ana auring to-aay in tne trial oi me case
of the State vs. George Harrison, Hay
Boyd and Daniel Featherstone, all colored,
charged with the murder of Eli Johnson,
colored. The jury returned a verdict of not
guilty.
Rosana Caldwell, colored, was found
guilty of setting fire to the dwelling house
of Mr, John Kirkpatrick. This closed the
criminal business. m.

LETTER PROM ROCK HILL.
Rock Hill, March 29.?For the past
week the subject of conversation, both on
the street and by the fireside, has been the
conflagration, and those of our citizens who
were so fortunate as to have insurance policies
on their property destroyed, have been
engaged with the insurance men, settling
their claims. I am pleased to report that
the claims have been most satisfactorily adjusted.
The amount to be paid by the various
companies is $57,382.17, divided among
them as follows:
Amount of Insurance. Am't Paid.

The buildings burnt are all to be rebuilt.
The Globe Hotel, Roddey & Co.'s store and
the Bank are to be in one building, which
will be three stories high, the second and
third stories to be usea exclusively by the
hotel. I have seen the plans of the building
and they indicate that it will be a great
improvement on the old one.
Frew Bros, and Steele Bros. & Co. will rebuild
at once. Capt. A. E. Hutchison has
already contracted for the erection of stores
for Fewell & Watson and W. S. Creighton
<fe Co.
While the disastrous fire has fallen heavily
on some of our citizens, it has also been
instrumental in furnishing employment to
a large number, and will be the means of
throwing into circulation this summer a
large amount of ready money, thereby in...
creasing the cash trade of the town.
^ The town authorities are contemplating
the purchase of a steam fire engine, and the
sinking of water cisterns.
Mr. James A. Hamilton, manager of the
Southern Telegraph Company at this place,
has returned to his former home in Orangeburg
county. The office of the telegraph
company was in the Globe Hotel, and as
most of the telegraph equipment was destroyed
with that building, the company has
decided to discontinue business at this place.
During Mr. Hamilton's stay in Bock Hill,
he and his family made many warm friends,
and his five-year-old son, John, a little gentleman
in every sense of the word, who delivered
telegrams to the business men, will
be missed. He was the pet of the town.
J. H. Rice, State Superintendent of Education,
addressed our citizens in the Library
building on Wednesday night. His address
was highly enjoyed by those who were
Ijresent. Mr. Rice would have had a much
arger audience but for the excitement
caused by the fire.
It is generally supposed that Rev. W. B.

by the church at Spartanburg. He has requested
the session of the church, at this
Slace, to call a congregational meeting next
unday, to unite with them in asking Bethel
Presbytery to dissolve his connection with
the church here. Bethel Presbytery meets
in Winnsboro, on the 5th of next month.
As pastor of the church at this place, Mr.
Jennings has been efficient and acceptable,
and in his change of fields what will be the
loss of the church here will prove to be
Spartanburg's gain.
The farmers were scarce in town last week,
the weather being so propitious for farming
work that they availed themselves of the
opportunity.
The office at this place of the Telephone
Company was raovea to-day into J. B. Johnson's
drug store. Thus are the Rock Hill
and York drug stores connected by wire.
At 10 A. M. yesterday a heavy rain and
hailstorm visited this place, lasting about
thirty minutes. Hal.

Five Good and Sufficient Reason*
Why every one who intends to paint should
use the Longman & Martinez Pure Prepared
Paint.
1st. Because of its purity, being free from
any ingredient that does not increase the value
of a paint.
2d. Because of its economy, costing, when
thinned ready for the brush, about Si. 17 per
gallon.
3d. Because of its known durability. It is
yet in good condition on houses in this county
on which it was applied from Gto 12 years ago.
4th. Because of its great covering properties,
two coats being equal to 3 coats of white lead
or any other paint.
5th. Because of the full and plainly worded
guarantee of the manufacturers that attaches to
every bill sold. Kcykendal,
Agent for Yorkville.

T. s. JEFFERYS
THE CYCLONE EXTINGUISHER.
Tirzah, S. C., March 10, 1887.
Messrs. Jefferys it IIokk, Gents:
THE Cyclone Spark 'Extinguisher put on I
my engine a few months ago is giving entire
satisfaction. Bofore It was put on, my gin-house
several times caught lire from sparks, got so I
had to quit running while^he wind was blowing
in the direction of the gin-house. Now I can gin
and saw with perfect safety, no matter which
way the wind blows. Haven't seen a live spark
from the engine since I have been using it. And
another good thing about itis.it can't wear or
burn out. Will last as long as the engine. I
think it a great invention, and wouldn't take
double the cost of mine if it was so I couldn't
get another one. I think you ought to reduce
the present high rate of insurance on gin-houses
where these extinguishors aro used 011 the engines,
or at least, recommend such to the companies
you represent, because I see 110 risk whatever
from the engine.
Very respectfully,
HENRY MASSEY.

CONCERNING CUANO.
Stand by the Record.
IT has been asserted in this advertisement that
"The Plow Brand," Raw Bone Guano was
53.00 per Ton better than Pacific Guano, as shown
by analysis of the State Department of Agriculture.
To remove any doubt on this point and
confirm our position, we will stand by the
record. The figures are infallible. When drawing
our comparison, we used the lowest commercial
value of each Brand, as shown in the
record, viz: Sample No. 58, Plow Brand, commercial
value ?28.34. Sample No. 34, Pacific
Guano, commercial value ?25.34. To be more
zealous in our efforts to boom the Plow Brand
and use its highest commercial value in comparison
with the lowest of the Pacific, as has been
the plan of my friend of the Pacific, the record
will show a difference in favor of the Plow Brand
of ?4,69. We waive this comparison for the present,
and squarely claim that when ottering the
Plow Brand we offer a goods ?3.00 per ton better
than any sold in this market, but we will not ask
you to pay us the difference in price.
