The Birmingham Boom.?Most of the ]
stories which have come from the scenes i
of the "Southern boom" are eclipsed by j
a broker who has just returned from Birm- I
ingham. A party of impecunious specu- j
lators bought from a farmer the "option"
of taking his farm at $5,000. They proposed
laying it out in town lots, and one of
the conditions of their bargain with the
farmer was that he must buy from them
two corner lots at the average price they
should obtain for corner lots at auction sale.
The speculators had the land staked off in
streets, caused handsome maps of the property
to be drawn and advertised the sale.
They were vefsed in the mysteries of wash
sales, and matched orders, and the way they
bid up corner lots against one another was
a caution to the auctioneer. Imagine the
feelings of the farmer when he found that
instead of receiving any compensation for
his farm, he was $3,000 in debt to the enterprising
^peculators, his two lots at the average
price obtained for corner lots costing

A Sensational Account.?Several newspapers
have published from Raleigh, N. C.,
a telegram giving a sensational and false account
of the sad and sudden death of Mrs.
W. A. Mauney, of King's Mountain. The
account states that a post mortem examination
had been that day ordered and foul
play would be shown ; also that intense excitement
was aroused at Grover and King's
Mountain. The above is not correct. There
was no post mortem examination held or
ordered. There is no excitement at Grover
or King's Mountain and both places still
have confidence in Mr. W. A. Mauney's integrity
of character. On a slight foundation
of truth, these newspapers have erected a
vast superstructure of romance.?Shelby

Judge for Yourselves, Brethren.
It has been said that more is learned by the
follies of men than by their wisdom. Judge for
yourselves, brethren, how much of truth there is
in the saying. If your neighbor paints his house
with Slop Paints or other cheap material, and
in a short time it cracks, chalks, scales and
comes off, you will, if a man of observation
and "gumption," profit by his folly and misfortune
and will apply this experience and secure
yourself against loss when you make an
investment in Paints. This is just what the
guarantee attaching to Longman <fc Matinez'
Paints is for, and it is in no vague or uncertain
terms. The proprietors are tangible beings who
can be heard and felt through Kuykendal, their
local Agent, who will in all cases see this guarantee
fulfilled in every bill sold by him.

PRESERVE YOUR SIGHT!
THERE is nothing in the world more precious.
The eye above all other Organs displays the
infinite power of the Creator. It is the most delicate
Organ, the preservation of which requires
the greatest care. Too often man, naturally careless,
neglects it and only perceives his folly
when it is too late and nothing is left to him but
bitter regret. Therefore, if an article destined to
fireserve and strengthen an organ of such absoute
necessity, can be obtained, it should be regarded
as a great blessing.

CYCLONE SPARK ARRESTER.
White Oak, S. C., January 5,1887.
"m JTR. O. J. HOKE : I have been using your
1Y1 "Cyclone Spark Arrester," and find" it a
tirst-class arrangement. I first used it on a 6 fl
horse power with a 12-inch stack, and found that I
a bunch of lint cotton held over the stack conld I
not be fired with the greatest speed I could give " V
the engine while threshing. Then, this Fall, I B
with a 9-inch stack, and when ginning aiTnigSt I I
was unable to stir the fire in the furnace enough
to make a spark go out of the stack. Finding
that I needed moro draught, you remember you fl
opened the smoke-stack wiaer and put on a 12- fl
inch saddle and stack. That gives me draught fl
enough to lift water 75 feet, to feed the boiler and fl
work the gin all at the same time, and to blow off H
steam at the pop-valve at 100 pounds. I have fi
ginned some half dozen bales of cotton after I
night, and as far as any fire from the stack is to H
be seen, you would not know there was any near H
it. On one occasion, the night was so dark that B
only the outline of the stack could be traced fl
from the side of theengine room, and vet there fl
was no sign of sparks from the top of the stack, fl
I have had the fire stirred upside down and I fl
find that the cinders getting through come out H
black and dead, while the coals fall back drown- fl
ed out and finally burn to ashes, in the smoke fl
box. I would not sell mine for $100, if I could H
not get another like it. While a half dozen gin- fl
houses around me have been on fire during the fl
dry weather, mine has escaped. I, therefore, fl
give you an unqualified endorsement of my fl
/"Cyclone Spark Arrester." I think I can sell a fl
half dozen around here. Very respectfully, fl
