(Jen. John A. Logan, United States Sei iter ,
from Illinois, and the unsuccessful candidal for
Vice-President on the Republican ticket, in (
died in Washington city last Sunday. He ad c
been in ill-health for several days, but the n *vs
of his death fell upon the public suddenly tnl
quite unexpectedly. <>en. Logan was in llie ]
sixty-first year of his age. He enlisted as a f i- <
vate soldier in the Mexican war, but rose to '*ie 1
rank of lieutenant. After returning home frmj, 1
that war he studied law, and entered political )j
life as a Heinocrat. In the Presidential can- j
paign of 1st in he advocated the election of lung- | t
las, but on the election of Lincoln, being tlici a '
member of Congress, he arrayed himself on tie I
side of the Union, and on the call for troops citered
the army, in which Deserved until the eld:; r
of the war. Since the war he has been pronf- t
nent in the political history of the country. IP(s
term in the U. S. Senate runs for four years froji
next March, though his death will not chaiuj

It was a general remark that there was less *
liquor drinking in town than has usually mark-j '
cd the observance of Christmas day, which, '
considering that Yorkville is a prohibition town, 1
will no doubt be a puzzling problem to the anti- 1
^Br temperance element of the State press, which 1
conjures processions of goblins iu the form of's
imrs on everv arrival of a train in a town where. I
the sale of the poison is prohibited. Hut not-1'
withstanding Yorkville is a dry town, (employ H
ing the favorite argument) citizens and visitors! *

The population of Yorkville has been increased
recently by the acquisition of Mr. James j

On Saturday, the l*th instant, and during the j
next day, colored emigrants for Liberia throng- |
ed onr little town. 'I'hev assembled froi: Clies- j
tor, York and Lancaster counties, and a worse !
fooled set you have never seen. One Hev. J. C.
Davidson, so-called, had imposed on the whole |
crowd by selling what purported to he tickets
to Liberia at si.no and cheeking different packages
of baggage at from ten to thirty-live cents

Liberia's hospitable shore.
The deception thus practiced upon the ignorant
blacks is easily to be perceived. Hut they
preferred to trust strangers rather than consult
white men of known integrity who live among
them. The amount paid for tickets and baggage
checks was small, compared to the other sacrifices
made. <>ne negro actually ?<>ld ten bushels
of corn for one dollar, and other similar sacrifices
served to make the crowd very poor. If
they had caught Davidson here on Monday last
they would have lynched him : because no train
came for tliein and they then found out the cheat.
Since my last, death has taken Mr. S. Ilotchkiss,
ouroldest citizen, and Dr. Mack's infant
son, Luther. The health of our community is
very good at present.
This morning we hud the heaviest frost known
to the oldest inhabitant. A fog began to rise
early last night, and it collected on weeds and
other herbage in the shape of frost.
The railroad bridge is about completed, and
that wonderful work has reused t<> agitate the
rural population.
The Fort Mill tohaeeo factory is ready for operation
and merchants can he supplied with good
smoking tohaeeo at moderate prices. This is
the first factory of the kind in the State, and
as the pioneer of a new hrauch of industry, it
deserves success.
The thoughtful people of our community commend
Sheriff HIcon's action in removing those
four prisoners to a place of safety, though they
regret that heever got charge of them at all.
Sportsmen are having some fun; hut otherwise
three Sundays seem to have come together.

Hock Hit.i,, Decent her 27.?Christinas day was
eelehrated in a quiet way hy our citizens. All
husiucss was suspended and the town hore the
appearance of Sunday. Dut for the small hoy
and his tin horn and lire-crackers, one would
have imagined it was Sunday. Divine service
was held at the F.piscopal church at 11 A. M.
At <> I'. M., the Sunday-school of the llaptist
church assembled in the church building with a
number of our citizens, where they found a
Christmas tree laden with presents for the scholars;
.and as each name was called and the child
raised its hand to receive the present, the countenance
of the happy recipient hore inexpressible
signs of joy. At 7 o'clock the same scene
was witnessed in the Methodist church, where
two large trees tilled with presents were distributed
among the Sunday-school scholars.
The Hock Hill Variety Company gave a most
amusing and enjoyable entertainment in Roddev's
hall last Thursday night. The music,
vocal and instrumental, was line, and the young
men who compose the company certainly deserve
congratulation. It is the intention of the
company to visit Yorkvilio in a short time, and
tiiose of your citizens who visit their entertainment
will certainly not regret it.
