talked, and when he finished he took the .

Expressing his Feelings.?A man
whoee matrimonial life had been anything
bat happy in consequence of the
quarrelsome habits of his wife, who thus
contrived to keep him constantly in hot
water with the neighbors, was at last relieved
of her company by death. As the
widower's means were limited, the funeral
was plain, but respectable enough to satisfy
any reasonable relative. The brother of
the deceased lady, however, was not a reasonable
man; and on the return of the
mourners to the house he ridiculed the
funeral, said that it was mean, undemonstrative,
and so quiet that all the neighbors
must have considered it niggardly.
" Yes, it was rather quiet," responded the
widower; "but what did you expect; did
you want me to show my submission to the
decree of Providence in removing my late
lamented spouse by closing the funeral with
a display of fire work~ ? I did think of a
cheerful display of some sort, but abandoned
the idea because I feared the neighbors
might talk about it, and say that I was giving
too much expression to my feelings." 1

EARTHQUAKES.
t SCIENTIFIC TREATISE ON TIIE SUBJECT.

The recent earthquake shock which did
bo much damage at the South, especially in
the stricken city of Charleston, S. C? is the
severest that has been felt on the eastern
joast of America during the' present centutury,
and scarcely, if at all surpassed in
violence by any on the Pacific coast of our
jontinent. Its effects seem to have been felt
jver nearly the whole area of the United
States, east of the Rocky Mountains. The
intense popular interest just now excited in
phenomena of this class makes it important
that a brief general discussion of earthquakes
be given in connection with the
recital of these terrible events that will be

whose homes have been desolated or whose
friends have been exposed to peril.
An earthquake is a commotion propagated
through the earth's crust in all directions
from source of disturbance, in waves
that outcrop on the surface and are manifested
in perceptible motion of the ground.
They vary in intensity from gentle tremblings,
requiring delicate instruments for
their detection, to convulsions of terrific violence,
capable of destroying the most substantial
products of human labor.
During the last thirty years the study of
earthquakes has been developed into a
branch of science to which the name seismology
has been given. The first man
who gave the world any reliable scientific
discussion of such phenomena was Mr.
Robert Mallett, of England, who visited
Naples immediately after the earthquake
which devastated Southern Italy in 1857.
The number of investigators in recent
years has been greatly multiplied. Instruments
have been devised for measuring the
intensity of shocks and for recording the direction
and registering the time of transit.
In regions where earthquakes are of frequent
occurrence such seismometers are distributed
at many points and kept in constant
readiness. It is from systematic
records from these that we derive our most
important information to-day.
America is fortunately not often shaken
and the number of seismometers kept in
readiness in our country is too small to assure
us of the accurate knowledge regarding
the recent shock. Earthquakes occur in all
parts of the world, but are most frequent in
mountainous regions, and especially those
of volcanic activity. The earthquake,
which was so destructive to life and property
a few days ago in Greece and Italy was
immediately followed by commotion in
the crater of Vesuvius. It is safe to say
that the same cause may give rise to both
volcanoes and earthquakes, but neither of
these implies the other necessarily. The
Himalayas and table lands of Central Asia
are subject to violent earthquakes, but almost
free from volcanoes. The Alps and
Pyranees are often shaken, but Include no
volcanoes that are not extinct. The same
is true of the American Pacific Coast range
3outh of the Columbia River. Non volcanic
basins, such as the valley of the Mississippi
and the basin of the Baltic Sea, have
been roughly shaken. Earthquakes are
more frequent in Russia, which consists
mostly of a low plain free from mountains.
Mr. Mallett collected a catalogue of be
tween 6,000 ana 7,000 eartnquaKes recorueu
between the periods B. C. 1606 and A. D.
1850. This is obviously a mere fraction of
the number that occurred between those
dates. Since 1850 the number of earthquakes
recorded has greatly increased,
though there is no reason to believe that
there is any increase in actual frequency of
shocks. By the use of seismometers in
[taly, Japan and elsewhere it has been
proved that in such regions scarcely a day
passes without a noticeable earth tremor.
Probably not a moment elapses without an
earthquake in some part of the world. The
surface is continually in a quiver, but fortunately
such gigantic agues as those that
throw down cities are comparatively rare.
No one cause can be properly announced
is fully accounting for al# earthquakes. By
Tar the most frequent is the breaking of the
earth's crust under the same surface contraction
that squeezes out lava from volcanoes
and folds the regions of weakness into
mountain ranges. The earth continues today
to give out into space the heat which
was locked in its interior during the early
stages of its planetary history. The rate is
now slow, but even though almost infinitesimal,
it involves contraction. The settling
nf the crust upon a diminishing interior necessitates
bending of the strata, and the
rock is put into a condition of gradually increasing
strain, until at some point it suddenly
yields with a violent concussion. A
fissure is produced, one side of which may
slide past the other, producing a "fault" and
giving a strong impulse to the adjacent rock.
All rock is more or less elastic, and the impulse
is propagated in all directions as an
earth wave. The violence of an observed
earthquake shock may therefore depend
upon the following conditions:
1. The degree of strain preceding the
concussion.
2. The extent of rock that yields.
S. The nature of the rock transmitting1
the impulse.
4. The distance of the observer from the
starting point of the earth's wave.
Faults have been frequently found where
the one wall has slipped past the other, not
merely several feet, but several thousands of
feet. One or more such are found in the
Appalachian mountain chain near the Atlantic
coast. It is not unlikely that some
relation may be traced between the recent
earthquake and the Appalachian line of
weakness.
Although the production of an underground
fissure may be suddeu it is never
instantaneous. A slight tremor is first felt;
this quickly rises to a maximum and then
dies out more slowly, the entire shock lasting
from ten seconds to two minutes or
more. Usually this is followed by several
more shocks. At first they may be separated
by a few minutes or a few hours, the
first being nearly always the most violent.
The intervals become greater with diminishing
intensity until quiet is restored.
Many persons in New York and Brooklyn
felt two or three shocks on the night of
August 31st. At Washington the first was
timed by Prof. Newcomb as occurring
at 9h. 33.20s ; the second about 9h. 54m. 30s.,
and quiet was not restored until 9h. 54ra.
The timing in various parts of the country
presents variations that are more apparent
than real, because there is not yet uniformity
in the adoption of the standard time
throughout the United States. It should be
remembered also that by standard time
when it is 10 o'clock in New York or Washington,
it is only 9 o'clock in St. Louis or
Chicago.
Earthquakes, especially occurring in volcanic
regions, are often not limited to two
or three shocks in quick succession, but
come in periods or groups.
During the twenty-four hours following
the destruction of Lima, 1746, as many as
200 shocks were counted, and within the
next four months 250 more were felt. At
San Salvador, in Central America, in the
neighborhood of Lake Hopango, more than
500 earthquake shocks were felt within the
last ten days of 1879. The water of the
lake was thrown into commotion, the
ground was broken into a net work of
cracks, and in January, 1880, a new volcano
arose in the center of the lake. These
earthquakes were obviously products of volcanic
energy. After the New Zealand earthquake
of 1848, the shocks continued for nearly
five months, and during much of the
time at the rate of at least 1,000 shocks per
day. By comparison with this, the afflicted
people of Charleston may call themselves
blessed, even though the earth shocks did
not cease there until twelve hours after the
first one had passed.
In 1797 an earthquake occurred in the Andes,
its focus being almost under the village
of Riobaraba. The ground was shattered in
many places; the bodies of men were
thrown upward fully one hundred feet into
the air and found afterward on a hill across
a small river. Graves are said to have been
rent open and corpses hurled out of them.
Despite such violence the extent of swing
imposed upon the ground by an earth wave
is seldom more than a few inches. By the
use of seismometers in Japan the verticomponent
has been found rarely to exceed onefiftieth
of an inch, and when the horizontal
component exceeds a fourth of an inch buildings
begin to be shattered. This limit was
evidently considerably exceeded at Charleston.
In New York chandeliers and doors
were made to swing through considerable
arcs, but the extent of swing depends more
on the violence than the amplitude of the
initial impulse.
Japan is continually shaken by earthquakes,
and from observations on seismometers
in that country the following results
have been deduced:
1. Different earthquakes across the same
country may travel with different velocities,
varying from a few hundred feet to
two miles or more per second.
2. The same earthquake travels more rapidly
near its focus than across regions remote
from it.
3. The greater the intensity of the shock,
the greater is the velocity of transmission.
Earthquakes have been artificially produced
by the explosion of gunpowder or dynamite
underground. The rate of.transit
for shocks produced by gunpowder was
found by Mr. Mallett to be 725 feet per second
in sand, and 1,665 in granite. Dynamite
explosions are more sudden and violent
than those of gunpowder. An explosion
of 50,000 pounds of dynamite was effected
at Hallet's Point in 1876. Through the
country the rate of transit of the shock varied
from 5,000 to 8,000 feet per second.
About 300,000 pounds of dynamite were exploded
at Flood Rock in October of last
year. The rate through the same country
varied from 5,000 to 20,000 feet per second,
or say from one to four miles per second
being fastest where the ground is hard rock
and slowest where it is sandy.
The effect of an earthquake shock is usually
far more disastrous on beds of sand or
clay than on soli? rock. The recent shock
has been most violent in regions of alluvial
deposit. Charleston and Savannah are built
on beds of low, flat, sandy country, hundreds
of miles away from the rocky regions
of the Alleghanies. Most, if not all of the
cities that have been destroyed by earthquakes
have been situated on soft ground.
In 1755 the most disastrous earthquake
on record passed under Lisbon. The lower
part of the city, built on clay, was utterly
destroyed. All of the buildings in the upper
part, resting on a foundation of basaltic
rock and hard limestone, escaped entirely.
In soft ground a violent earthquake always
produces cracks, which often close
just after the passage of the wave. In many
places they are left as open chasms of great
size. In an earthquake that occurred in

swallowed up by fissures that closed over
them. Some were caught as if in a trap
and gripped thus until death ended their
sufferings.
Many of the greatest earthquakes hitherto
recorded have started from foci under
the sea near the coast. In such cases a
great wave is produced over the point of
disturbance and spreads out, followed,1
of course, by others from the same point.
If due to the faulting of sea bottom we may
easily understand how the sudden uplift of
one wall through hundreds of feet would
be a cause capable of producing a wave
many times higher than any that have
swept the shore under the action of the
wind. The destructive effect often exceeds
that of the earth wave. Many instances
have been recorded of ships being lifted up
and stranded far inland. The sea wave that
followed the earthquake of Lisbon reached
the shore an hour after the lower part of
the city had had been destroyed. By the
falling of houses 30,000 people had been
killed. An equal number perished before
the series of great waves had exhausted
their great energy, making 60,000 victims
in a single city. The height of such waves
has been estimated, on good data, as much
more than one hundred feet.
From the fact that no sea wave has swept
up the Savannah river, and the rumors
of flooding at Charleston have not been confirmed.
it mav be concluded that the focus
of the recent earthquake is not under the
sea idrthe neighborhood of the worst shaken
cities.
Sea waves produced by earthquakes near
the south American coast, have made the
entire passage of the Pacific ocean with energy
enough to make a circuit of the globe
except for the intervening continents.
By comparison of records covering long
periods of time, earthquakes have been
found to be very slightly more frequent in
winter than in summer, and at times when
the relative position of the sun and moon is
such as to produce the highest tides. But
no intimate relation between earthquakes
and the minor fluctuations of the weather
has been established on any basis of careful
observation. At certain points the earth's
crust may be in a condition of strain, almost
at the critical point of rupture. A
prolonged depression of the temperature
tends to increase the contraction, and an
earthquake may possibly be thus determined.
The moon's attraction may likewise
increase the strain very slightly. But beyond
this the weather prophet of earthquakes
is left to nothing better than conjecture.
In volcanic regions the escape of soluble
gases through minute cracks in the ground
may serve as an indication of subterranean
disturbance by altering the taste of mineral
springs. This has sometimes excited lucky
conjectures of approaching earthquakes as
the forerunners of a volcanic eruption.
Rumbling in the ground is not infrequently
a very brief forerunner. But such signs are
very unreliable, and no method of predicting
an earthquake has yet been discovered.
Immediately after a shock there are always
claimants for the honor of having
guessed its approach , but invariably they
are unable to give any definite ground upon
which the relation between cause and effect
can be traced. Stories about peculiar conditions
of the air, or of the human system,
or about the terror displayed by animals,
as premonitors of earthquakes are exclusively
the produtcts of superstition.
SOME EARTHQUAKE FACTS.
That the United States is not exempt
from earthquake shocks is shown by the fact
that for ten years?from 1873 to 1883?three
hundred and sixty-three notable shocks occurred
throughout the country, the larger
number, however, being in the north-western
States and on the Pacific coast.
There have been also several notable
earthquakes in this country. Excepting
perhaps, that of the 31st ultimo, the earthquake
of November 18,1775, was the mosl
severe of any occurring in the Eastern and
Middle States. It was believed to have
been promulgated from the same centre as
that of the one that destroyed Lisbon about
thirty days before. It began in Massachusetts
with a roaring noise like that of thun
der, which continued for a minute. Ther
followed a shock with a long, rolling swell
like that of an immense sea-wave, and mer
everywhere in the fields ran to trees and
fences to keep from falling. After severa
| small shocks there came a quick horizontal
tremor, with sudden'jerks and wrenches
but it died away after two minutes, butnu
merous shocks followed during the nexl
month. In Boston, chimneys were throwr
down, fish in the harbor killed, and new
springs opened. Nine hours afterward ?
tidal wave, twenty feet high, that had urn
doubtedly originated at the source of the
earthquake, reached the harbor of St. Martin's
in the West Indies.
In 1811 occurred the famous earthquake
of New Madrid in Missouri, in the vallej
of the Mississippi river. Humboldt re
marks that it presents one of the few exam
pies of the incessant quaking of the ground
for several successive months from any vol
cano. Over an extent of country stretching
for 300 miles southward from the mouth o
the Ohio river the gr^nd rose and sank
in great undulatious, and lakes sank anc
were again drained. The surface burs*
open in fissures that generally tended N. E
and S. W., and were sometimes more thar
half a mile long; from these fissures rauc
and water were often thrown as high a;
tops of the . trees. During the continuance
of these convulsions the inhabitants dis
tinguished two classes of movements, the
vertical and the horizontal; the latter were
regarded as far more desolating than the
former. The disturbances continued ove
what has since been called "the sunk coun
try" until March, 20, 1812, when they ceas
ed coincidentally with the great earthquaki
of Carracas, the capital of Venezuela, des
troying the greater part of that city an<
many thousand human lives.
On October 19, 1870, there was a notabli
shock in the Eastern and Middle States
The source of this disturbance has beei
traced with some probability to the volcan
ic region 50 to 100 miles N. E. of Quebec
from this region the shock spread to St
John's, New Brunswick, and thence wa
felt westward to Chicago and southward t<
New York. The velocity of the wave shocl
was about 14,000 feet per second. The oc
currence of the shock felt at Quebec was tel
egraphed to Montreal by the operators o
the Montreal telegraph company in time t<
call the attention of those at the latter citj
to the phenomena about 30 seconds befori
the shock reached them.
In California, the earthquake of 185!
destroyed one of the southern missions
That of March 20,1872, was the most sever
that has occurred there during many years
special damage was done in San Francisci
by the cracking of the walls of the fin<
public buildings. In Nevada, the mininj
regions, suffered in 1871 by the destructioi
of Lone Pine and other settlements. Ii
Mexico a disastrous earthquake occurre<
June 19,1858. It extended throughout thi
valley of Mexico, demolishing th&aqueduc
that supplies the city with water; it wa
felt in most of the surrounding provinces
where it also did great damage, and was ii
some places recorded as being the most se
vere ever experienced there.
The city of Charleston, the principal sea
of the recent earthquake, stands upon a fla
tongue of land which extends southeastwan
between Ashley and Cooper rivers, forminj
a peninsula, terminating in a narrow fori
at the south and gradually widening to th<
north. The rivers where they join form i
conspicuous harbor, which extends south
east about seven miles, where it joins th<
Atlantic ocean. The harbor is completely
landlocked except at its entrance, which i
about one mile wide, and has a depth o
water of eighteen feet. The portion of thi
city near the river fronts is made land ; 01
the south particularly large tracts havi
been reclaimed from the river flats. Th<
natural soil of the city proper is a sand rest
ingonan alluvial formation deposited by
the rivers. Charleston has had a libera
share of earthquakes since the middle of thi
eighteenth century. The earliest histori
cal record shows that the town was slightly
skaken by an earthquake May 19, 1754
This was followed April 4, 1799, by a vio
lent shock, accompanied by a rumbling
sound and a high wind. A slight shoe!
was felt September 10,1811. Two month!
later there were violent and repeatec
shocks. Six of them were distinctly felt
Slight shocks were felt January 24 and Feb
ruary 4, 1812. There were shocks accom
panied by a loud rumbling and hissinj
sound February 7, 1843. The most violen
earthquake of that series occurred Decern
ber 19,1857, when houses and other build
ings were slightly shaken up. These dis
turbances did not differ materially frou
the shocks felt in Suramervilleand Charles
ton on the 31st ultimo, when gate bells wer<
rurfg, crockery was broken, and small ar
tides knocked about generally.
There have been also many tidal wave
at Charleston, some of which were very de
structive.
The Cranberry Ores.?In a recent ad
dress, Col. C. A. Nimson, superintendent o
the Cranberry iron mines, said: "By shaft
ing, boring, tunneling and surface mining
we have now developed the Cranberry iroi
ore deposits, 500 feet wide, 280 feet high ant
1,500 feet long. From, the experience o
mining 40,000 tons of ore, we find that '
cubic feet of ore in a place will make a ton
showing that there is now developed in thi
deposit over twenty million tons, while thi
indications through the valley show tha
the ore runs much deeper than the lowes
present working. These indications ant

property for over 5,000 feet to where thej
are again developed. To mine and trans
port this ore now developed to Johnson Cit;
will cost over fifty million dollars in labor, a
least two-thirds of which will, through thi

while it will require, on the other hand, th?

next step one onward and upward on the
