Colored Education.?In an article on i
colored education the New Orleans Picayune
says: "The truth is that the white people of
the South, although the expense of the
undertaking fallsalmostentirely upon them,
are making the most strenuous efforts to
educate the colored children of their section.
This statement is amply supported by statistics.
In 1882, 56 per cent, of the white
school population were at school (in public
schools,) and of the colored 45.70 per cent.
It is true that these figures show a somewhat
larger proportion of white than of
colored children at school, but the races
share alike under the laws that make no
distinction between them. The fact that p
the cost of maintaining public schools is re
borne almost entirely by the white people io
must appear particularly significant when tb
we remember that the South pays no more
in proportion of her taxable property for 11
public schools than the rest of the Union.
The Southern people will plead guilty to
poverty, but what they have they will
share with the negro for educational puriMnu

Not a Living Profit. F
We have not, heretofore, made a living profit
on the sales of Longman <fc Martinez's Pure Prepared
Paints. Have, therefore, determined to ar
advance the price 10 cents per gallon. These el
paints sell nowhere at less than ?1.75 per gallon, se
and in many towns sell largely at ?2.00 per gallon. ^
As to the quality of these Paints I have permission
to refer to Nelson Davies, an old practical
painter, who has studied paint, and has perhaps
as much paint sense as any man in the State. He
is authorized by the manufacturers to guarantee
every job on which he uses them, and they, or I,
will see it fulfilled to the letter. For sale in town jn

' THE LOST PARAGRAPH.
IN the paragraph relating to the "Piedmont
Beauty" Tobacco crowded out last week, we
? took high ground with regard to it. and maintained
stoutly, that from what we knew of the
manufactured weed generally and from what
our customers said of this brand in particular,
3 that it was as good a chew as the highest priced
article manufactured, no matter what the price
of it might be. We are of the same opinion still.
In every neighborhood within trading reach of
- York you hear of the fame of P. B. Tobacco.
We have just in 10 boxes; the stock of every
plug of which is the same, inside as good as the
outside, wrapper and filler alike and all twin
beauties. Price 50 cents per pound.

mind will be balanced well enough to tell you
that the Zeigler Shoes are only worth 32.50, and
that the
