About 2400 Years Old.
There is a leather scabbard in the British Museum
that dates back 500 years before the Christian
era. This is the oldest piece of leather in
the world, and although Herodotus nowhere
speaks of its having been preserved with the J.

application of it would still keep it sound
through many of the coming centuries. J. I. C.

The Proof or the Padding.
We assert our Pure Prepared Paint to be of
greater value than any pure White Lead in the
world, both in body and durability, and will cost
the property owner less. This is demonstrated
by the fact that our Prepared Paint has the preference
with consumers, over White Lead, in every
locality where it has been introduced. We do
not make this assertion and leave it unsupported.
Paint one-half of any building (or one-half of
any surface) with our paint, and the other half
with strictly pure White Lead and Linseed Oil,
mixed by hand. Cover both parts alike. If the
portion painted with our paint does not cost less
to paint than the part painted with White Lead
ana Linseed Oil, we will make no charge for our
Paint. LONGMAN & MARTINEZ.

OBITUARY.
K, Died?At Zeno, York county, S. C., on Saturday
afternoon, July 25th, 1885, LEWIS GEORGfc
RIDDLE, infant son of Robert B. and Hannah
E. Riddle, aged 1 year -1 months and 5 days.
Little George was a bright and affectionate
child, whom it pleased God to call to his bosom
after a painful illness of several weeks' duration.
Of nearly the same age as his little cousin Nina,
taken from her earthly abode only a few days
previously, both have been called to the Precious
Redeemer who hath said : "Suffer little
children to come unto me, and forbid them not;
for of such is the kingdom of Heaven." To the
afflicted households bereft of the darling child,
and especially to the afflicted parents in this
sad bereavement, thetenderest sympathy is offered
with the hope that they may receive the
comfort which Christ alone can give, until the
silent Messenger shall open the door and bid
them enter where their treasure has gone.
On earth his voice did bless you with its love.
But now he's gone and whispers from above;
()' er the bruis'd heart on whicn the world has trod,
Pours healing balm and points the way to Uod.
