THE OBJECT OF X FARMERS' CLUB.
Article 2nd of the constitution of the "Farmers'
Club of Bethel Township," reads as
follows: "The chief object of the Club shall
be to advance the interest and improve the
minds of farmers and induce them to work
out the most profitable, practical and accessible
plan of intensive farming."
The object of the Club, as thus set forth
by this article of the constitution, expresses
the purpose of the organization; expresses
thfe purpose for which the members meet
once a month to confer with and consult
each other about; but it would more clearly
and forcibly declare the special purpose and
design of organization, to transform or reconstruct
the language embraced, and allow
the article to read in this light: "The
chief object of the club shall be to induce
farmers to work out the most profitable,
practicable and accessible plan of intensive
fhrmincr therehv imDroviner the mind and
advancing their interest." This is the special
object of the Club to induce farmers to
experiment, to leave the old ruts of farming
in search of new and better roads to successful
farming. We recognize the danger of
mire or failure in adopting new and untried
theories in the intensive system of farming,
without experience and practical knowledge
; hence the necessity and help of the
organization. In presenting the purpose of
the club in the last light, we do not mean
that the minds of farmers should not be
improved and developed on other subjects
than farming, or that their interest does
not extend beyond the cultivated fields;
but that this club has special work in view,
and that work is the gathering of practical
knowledge of improved and profitable agriculture.
This is a worthy purpose, and the
necessity of such work no thoughtful farmer
will question.
For the organization to accomplish this
noble aim the cause and conditions must
arouse the latent energies and talents of
men, and put them in action. Being organ:
zed, and conversing on such topics as
come before the Club, will in somekdegree
have this effect; but to engender the spirit
of rivalry we have adopted the premium
plan or svstem which by nature of the character
and disposition of men, will enlist the
whole powers of mind and muscle to excel.
Premiums are awarded, regardless of cost
or prone in ene crop raiseu, me uujecu at
present being to induce the exploration of
regions yet untried in the science and art of
farming.
At some future day, to further induce improvement,
we may award degrees; but
will not base the degree on the fee to be
paid, or the form to be gone through with,
out upon the practical knowledge the applicant
has gathered about intensive farming,
and the knowledge to be based on work
actually accomplished.
Farmers need education. I will not attempt
to argue that it requires as much preparation
in the different institutions of learning
to become a successful farmer, as it does
to uecome a successful practitioner of some
profession; but I do claim that there is
as much room for the logical reasoning
and profound thinking of a thoroughly cultivated
and well developed mind in the
practice of the intensive system of farming
as there is in the practice of law, physics
or any other profession.
Organizations of any kind that have worthy
objects or aims in view, are a stimulant
to general education, as well as they are educators.
We know of no better method to
induce a man to educate his children than
make him feel by'experience the need of
an education himself. Words and arguments,
however strong and forcibly presented,
often prove but a passing sound. But
bring uneducated men in contact with each
other to transact business where education
and mental culture is absolutely necessary,
and you will make them feel the need of an
education in such a way they never felt before.
The business of organized bodies
serves this purpose, and for this reason and
for social benefits should be kept up in all
communities. E. D. Thompson.

Xothing tliut Defiletli.
I have just made another examination of the
"Royal," "Andrews' Pearl" and "Dr. Price's
Cream" Baking Powders and the results are the
same as formerly. Dr. Price's is free from Ammonia,
while the "Royal" and "Pearl" both contain
Ammonia. The final reaction of "Dr. Price's
Cream" is acid, while the "Royal" and "Pearl"
give an alkaline reaction which leads to Dj-spepsia.
Price's is a pure, clean and elegant Powder,
and there does in no wise enter into it anything
that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination,
or maketh a lie.

REMEMBER AUG. 26TH, '85.
f
ALL persons who have not yet taken chances at
the Buggy and those that want more chances
will please bear in mind that AUGUST 2<>th will
soon roll round and pass away, and the golden
opportnnity to get a
Buggy, Watcli, or Machine
For nothing will be gone, never more to return,
at the Old Chap's. So if you want to get either
of the above named articles free of cost, now is
your time?the Old Chap is ready and willing to
wait on you, and give you a chance for every
$2.00 worth of goods you buy from him, and the
goods will not cost you a cent more, as you will
buy them justaschem) as you can get them anywhere
in the State, as Yorkville sells better goods
for the money than any town in the State of S.
C., and besides, this is no lottery scheme, as you
Pay Nothing for the Chances.
It is not like futures, where you have to anty up
your margins every few weeks. Ministers of almost
all denominations do not hesitate to accept
chances. We have names from quite a number
of States on our books, from South Carolina to
New York, and we want it distinctly understood
that we are, at this writing, very anxious to sell
goods,
Especially Summer Goods,
Summer Dress Goods at almost your own price,
Readv-Made Clothing, which fits so well, at reduced
prices ; Cottonades, Summer Cassiineres,
and all Summer Goods, of every description, at
reduced prices, to close out and make room for
Fall Goods. We would rather be troubled with
your Greenbacks than our Summer rags. So do
not think that we don't want your money. We
certainly need it, and will give you as much for
it as any firm in this country, and say thank you,
too. We are yery liberal in many respects. If
you are good, we will sell you all the goods you
want and do not ask you for ten times the amount
of collateral, as you would us if we wanted that
amount of money from you. Our goods are just
the same as money, as we have to pay the cash
for them. Had you ever thought of it in that
light? So you see we have ten times as much
confidence in you all as you have in us. So you
see we think well of you. Come along and
Let Us Sell You all tlie Goods
You want, and we will check you a chance at
the Sewing Machine, Buggy ana Watches, and
that is better than you can do elsewhere. You
can buy goods just as cheap, may be, but you
will not get any chances thrown in. So you see
the Old Chap will do you better than any one
else. Remember August 20, and after that time
NO MORE CHANCES

DYSPEPSIA CAY BE CURED.
Henry County, Ala., August 7,1883.
TAR. P. R. IIOLT, Dear Sir: It affords me
f pleasure to add my testimony to your valuable
remedy for Dyspepsia. I hatl suffered with
it in its worst form for two or three years. My
whole nervous system became involved; had frequent
palpitations of the heart; tried a number
of physicians at home and abroad with no relief
until I bad despaired of getting well. Your
Dyspeptic Elixir was prescribed finally by an
eminent physician. Having no confidence it
was not taken with any regularity, but was convinced
before taking up the bottle that I was improving;
purchased more, am taking more regularly,
and I am proud to state was entirely
cured by it and have remained so for two years.
