? A fire in Laurinburg, last Friday morning,
destroyed seven stores and a number of
smaller buildings.
? The death sentence of Enoch Brown,
who was to have been hanged at Goldsboro
last Friday,- has been commuted by Governor
Jarvis to imprisonment for life.
? The Newton Enterprise of Saturday last
says that the sale of the Sparkling Catawba
springs to Mr. E. H. Abell, of Chester, S. C.,
has been cancelled, and that Dr. Elliott has
taken charge of the property again.
the Superior Court of Mecklenburg
county last week, Adolphus Pressly, colored,
was put on trial for nis life for the burglary
of Latta's store in Charlotte, on last
New Year's morning. In the second story
of the store is a bed room where two of the
clerks sleep regularly, and this fact made
the offense a capital one. The prisoner was
ably defended, but it availed h'im little in

jury was out a very short time before returning
a verdict of guilty.
? In the Superior Court of^Catawba county,
last week, .ludge Shipp presiding, a
young man by the name of Nathan Deal
was on trial for stealing an axe. The jury
returned a verdict pf "not guilty." The
Judge, after requiring the defendant to give
bail for his appearance to answer the charge
of peijury, turned to the jury and in a very
angry tone, ordered them out of the jury
box and told them to go home and not come
back again. The Enterprise says a new
jury was summoned on Thursday morning,
and the people generally feel very indignant
over the unwarranted insult to twelve
of our most respected citizens."
Congressional Nominations.?In view

A DEBT implies at least, a prior faith in the
ability or integrity of the contractor and his
willingness to discharge obligations made or assumed
bv him.
The reliance or trust of man in the responsibility,
honesty and probity of his fellow-man is
what is known as Credit, and is the _power that
moves the machinery of the commercial world.
It speeds tl e plough, whirls the spindle, drives
the engine, forges the metals, and tills the ocean
and water ways of the country with vessels
bearing its commerce.
Destroy t lis confidence and attempt to transact
the business of thecountry on the basis of simultaneous
transfer of cash and commodity, and its
volume would shrink into insignificance. Credit
is the seed corn from which all fortunes grow.
Seeing then, its necessity and importance, wo
should guard with jealous care whatever of it we
have been able to build up. It is only when men
abuse this trust that they are bound by the fetters
of the law.

WEST LIBERTY.
COME and seens for the best bargains in York.
We had a long conversation with a gentleman
a few davs ago, and speaking of business,
low prices, cneap goods, etc., he said he had
bought a quantity of goods, from time to time,
and that he had always found it to his advantage
To Buy First-Class Goods,
And for that reason he had always patronized the
Mammoth ; and he said it had 'the same reputation
among his neighbors. If you pay for a good
article at the Mammoth, jrou may count on it.
True, they do keep some cneap goods, but then
they do not pretend they are otherwise, and sell
them accordingly. Yesterday we sold a gentleman
a small bill, only $9.00, and he never asked
the price of a single article, and when he asked
for the amount of his bill, he said the reason he
bought goods at the Mammoth was, that he was
satisfied he bought them right. So you see
HUNTER & OATES have the reputation of selling

MILLINERY AND DRESS-MAKING. F
i
Mrs. DOBSON is now in New York City, making
selections and buying goods for her Spring a
r trade. One great reason of her success is her going
to market twice a year, buying her own goods, J!
and making such selections as she knows will 11
please her trade. Her purchases will be larger
this season as her increasing trade demands more
and finer goods. Her stock of Millinery will be
larger and finer than ever before brought te this
market. She intends keeping a large stock of
