NORTH CAROLINA NEWS.
? Robert Ritchey, of Catawba county,
claims to have been robbed on the highway j
near Newton, by five men, one night last
week, who, he says, took from him $144 in !
cash.
? Edward Brown, the son of wealthy parents,
took laudanum at Smithfield last,
Thursday night, from the effects of which he ;
died on Friday morning. He had spent his
money lavishly, and being reprimanded by
his parents, drank until his brain was affected,
and then took poison.
? The report of the warden of the North
Carolina penitentiary shows that the total
number of convicts in theState, December 1,
1883, was 1,013. Of these 960 were males,
and 63 females. Of the males 113 were
??_ *_ . ooo Of iho fo

males 5 were white, 58 colored.
? Cato J. Jenks, aged 53 years, a merchant
of Apex, Wake county, has deserted his
sick wife and three little children andeloped
with Varina Pearson, the 13 year old daughter
of his clerk. The girl is very delicate
and is small for her age. Endeavors are being
made to intercept them. Their relations
assert that they have gone to Illinois.
The affair has caused a great sensation.
? The Newton Enterprise says that Mrs.
Pinckney Lineberger of Catawba county,
^ presented her husband last Sunday two girls
and one boy. All were alive and are still
doing well. One is a prodigy, in that it has
not a particle of a skull. Its brains are only
covered by a thin, transparent skin, but
in every other respect it is as well developed
as the others, and seems as healthy as any.
?Gastonia GhtzeJte, Friday: Dr. J. R.
Bratton, of Yorkville, came up last Wednesday
evening, to assist Dr. J. B. Hunter,of
(rastoii county, in performing a surgical operation
on a little cnild of Mr. M. A. Rhyne,
which is seriously ill with hydrocephalus,
or water in the head. The operation has
* been deferred for the present. They meet
again for consultation in about ten days.
MERE-MENTION.
Hon. John C. New, of Indiana, has tendered
his resignation as Assistant Secretary
of the Treasury. It is estimated that
the Illinois Central Railroad handles a million
trunks in six months, unhandling not
less than a quarter of them. It is a great
trunk line. An explosion of gas occurred
last Thursday in the Crested Butte coal
mino f1ninmrin. nnd fiftv nine men and one
boy, in the chamber at the time, are supposed
to have been killed. James Nutt,
^ who was on trial at Pittsburg, Pa., last
week for the murder of Dukes, the slayer of
young Nutt's father, was acquitted. The
Judge's charge was against the prisoner; but
the jury viewed the matter differently. Insurance
papers say that the losses by fire in
r this country last year aggregate $103,000,000.
Miles Hall, arrested at Catlettsburg,
Ky., last week for bigamy, is only 19
years old, but it is said he has four wives,
and was about to marry a fifth when captured.
Ex-Governor Letcher, of Virginia,
died at his home in Lexington, last
Saturday morning. The Minnesota
State prison at Stillwater was destroyed by
fire last Saturday night. Despite all efforts,
every building was consumed, though no
lives were lost. All the property destroyed
belonged to the State, and was partially
insured. Female suffrage is a failure in
Vermont. Of 314 women who had a right
to vote at a recent election in Burlington,
only eight exercised the privilege. Mayor
Cummings, of Bangor, Maine, has again
yetoed standard time, on the ground that
solar time is according to "one of the inevitable
laws of God." Congressman E. W.
M. Mackey, of the Seventh South Carolina
district, died in Washington on Monday
last. His death was sudden and unexpected.
He died from peritonitis. v'The
Senate has confirmed the nomination of
Emory Speer to be United States Attorney
for the Northern District of Georgia.
The health of Jefferson Davis is
extremely poor this winter. His eyes give
him much trouble and his step is feeble.
Congress has resolved to send an
expedition to the relief of Lieut. Greely regardless
of what the expense may be. A
few days previous to Congressman Mackey's
* death he nominated Robert Shaw Wilkins,
colored, of Beaufort, aged 19, for a West
Point eadetship.

T this week ?"
"Well, sir, everything and every person seem
to he stuck in the mud, or stuck in the house to
keep from being stuck in the mud. Trade is just ,
about as good as could be expected. You cannot i
expect much when all the ladies are housed up.
When they are housed up the men are so despoil- ]
dent and cross that you cannot do anything with <
them."
"Well, sir, what about those
Machines 1
You talked so much about last week?"
"Well, sir, they are stuck in tho house to keep
from being stuck in the mud. As soon as tho i
weather breaks up thov will lie booming in tho ]
county."
"How are your Dolmans, Cloaks and Jackets !
getting orrr" i.
"Well, sir, they sire not even getting off the i
shelf to be shown. No one seems to want them,
even at their own price. Only sold three since ]
the first of January." :
"HOW ABOUT OVERCOATS?" ,
"Well, sir, wo are doing pretty well 011 them.
Hardly ever fail to sell if we can fit a man. We
are doing well on Dress Suits, specially on those 1
pretty Diagonals. Wo never fail 011 them, when

IHAVK been fortunate insecuring the control
ofthesaleof the Pacific Acid and Ouano in
this section, having succeeded with their good
will, Messrs. Hunter A Oates of the "Mammoth."
I would be glad to supply again all those who
have heretofore used these goods, and of course
any others who may desire to doso. The Pacific,
is one of the best, if not the best Phosphate Rock

brand, is pronounced by those who have applied
it to their crops, to be superior to anything they
have ever used. I have also a supply of Kainit
and a stock of Improved Harris' Fertilizer.
Having bought the above goods for cash, I am
prepared to meet any prices that even "panicky"
dealers may make.
And now, "friends countrymen and lovers,"
hear me for the cause of the celebrated Irish
Hone, a pure animal bone Acid Phosphate, unquestionably
superior to, and cheaper at the
price asked for it, than any Rock Acid. I have
heretofore been unable to supply the demand for
this brand of goods, and my supply again being
limited, I desire to furnish first, if possible, all
those who have been using it. I would feel
obliged, therefore, if you would call the first day <
you are in town, or "drop me a line" by mail,
stating how much you are likely to need, and T
will keep it for you.
