CHEROKEE HIGH SCHOOL.
Black's, S. C., May 31.?The spring term
of Cherokee High School, at this place,
closed its first session yesterday, with an
able and well delivered address on Edueation,
by Captain W. T. R. Bell, of King's
Mountain, N. C., and exercises by the pupils
of the School at night.
Early in the day people began to gather,
and long before the hour appointed, 2, P.
M., the large house, capable of seating five
hundred, was crowded to its utmost capacity,
while a very large number were standing
around the doors unable to procure
seats. The arrival of the down train from
Charlotte, at 11 A. M., brought many from
Gastonia. King's Mountain, and Whitaker,
among that number the Gastonia Cornet
Band, whose services were secured for the
occasion; and right well did they enliven
the exercises with apppropriate music.
The east bound train arrived at 1. P. M.
bringing many of our friends and neighbors
from Gaffney City and surrounding
country, many of whom visit our town only
on such an occasion.
Then as the bell signalled that the hour
for the address had arrived, every business
< house was closed and work of all kind suspended,
thus emphatically bespeaking the
interest of our people in the cause of ecluca
tion in our miasr, ana ine commence m
the ability of the orator of the day, which
the sequel proved was not misplaced.
The stage was very neatly and tastefully
decorated, and on it were seated the following
gentlemen: Prof. McArthur, Principal
of Gaffhey City High School; Prof.
Anthony, Principal of Whitaker High
School; Dr. John Black, and a number of
other leading citizens. Capt. W. T. R. Bell
was introduced by Prof. Anthony. With
a few appropriate remarks to the school,
the speaker announced his subject, "Ignorance
Impoverishes." The orator, for well
does he deserve to be so called, then in his
masterly and inimitable manner produced
fact after fact, wedging them in with statistics
till every one must acknowledge that
ignorance is the, bane of our country. He
proved very conclusively that the great
want of the sister States, the two Carohnas,
was a system of education that would reach
the masses; that those two States were
attempting to educate their children with
48 cents for each child, and that it could not
but be a failure, and finally laid the fault
at the feet of our Legislators.
The speaker also showed that the colored
, race haa outstripped the white, since obtaining
freedom, in educating their children;
that the whites were retrograding, while
the colored race, in an educational point,
was on the aggressive. Thus he held his
4 large audience with his masterly address
for two hours. Long may it be remembered
by our people.
At the close of the address, the Rev. J.
A. White, principal of the school, dismissed
the audience until 7.30 P. M., when the
exercises were resumed. Long before this
' hour, the house was filled with eager and
anxious spectators. At the appointed time
the curtains were drawn and the principal
announced that the exercises would consist
of declamation, recitations and charades,
essays ?&c.; that the school had been
in session only four months, and 95 pupils
were enrolled; that the exercises would be?
gin with a salutatory address by A. T.
Hardin?-subject the "True Teacher." He
acquitted himself well and deserves much
credit.
We would like to give names and subjects
of all the school, but suffice it to say that it
was admitted by all to be a grand success,
adding much to the credit of the well
known Principal and his efficient assistant,
Miss Laura Sharpe.
The whole exercises gave proof of close
drill in the class-room, and undivided attention
in preparing them for the occasion.
The exercises were closed by the valedictory
pronounced by A. D. Hardin, who had
for his subject, "The True Glory of Man."
His rendition of the address proved young
Mr. Hardin to be quite an orator.
Thus closed a long-to-be-remembered
occasion. The next session of the school
will open July 9 and close December 24.

F look for yourselves. You will find one of i
E. Macarthv's celebrated Horse Powers erect- j

mules lie will render the same power of a sixhorse
engine. The material for making this
horse power can be hewn out 011 any farm in two ,
days' time, and is so simple and durable that you ;
can't help but be struck with it. It is always
ready without adjustment, to run a fifty-saw gin
with two mules, and gin from live to six bales
daily with ease. Any farmer making twenty
bales of cotton cannot afford to be without one
of these labor-saving and economizing Horse
Powers. Attach the power to an outhouse and
gin your bale before vou can haul it. The toll

That Wizard Oil has had an immense sale here is
t fact, and that it possesses great potency in reieving
and curing Rheumatism, Neuralgia,

t fact likewise, that may be proven by the mouth

necessary for a good machine, being light,
nple in construction and at the same time duble,
giving it advantages over machines that
rvest equally as well but are heavy with eomicated
machinery rendering it difficult to farers
not accustomed to machinery to work and
