- MERE-MENTION.
There are thirty-five counties in Kentucky
without newspapers. The Arkansas
legislature has passed a stringent law for the
protection of timber. It provides severe
penalties against persons cutting timber on
land owned by other parties. Up to
January, according to the Washington Critic,
there nad been paid to the government
counsel in the star route cases, $115,854.04 in
fee9. No wonder the cases drag along when
the counsel are luxuriating in such a rich
pasture. Ensign George M. Stoney, of
the U. S. Navy, who made one trip to the
arctic regions in search of the missing Jeanette,
is to take another cruise among the
icebergs, to carry supplies to the Greelev polar
party. Great alarm isXelt in "New
England because of the unusual accumulation
of ice and snow so late in the season.
Immense and damaging, freshets are feared
when the thaw comes. Snow fell in
Washington all day last Friday, and on the
same day was reported from Wilmington,

Halifax. At some points in Canada the
depth of the fall on Friday was from ten to
eighteen inches."" The trial of Joe Brady
for participation in the Phoenix Park
murders has been fixed for the 10th of April.
The rest of the prisoners to be tried for that
crime, and rur the assault on Juror Field,
will be afterwards tried singly. An
eruption of Mount yEtna occurred last Thursday,
and the latest intelligence is to the effect
that the eruption is increasing in violence.
A new crater has opened. Lava
from the volcano threatens to overwhelm
Xicolasi and other villages. The people
living in the threatened places are fleeing
from their homes. Troops are assisting
them. Improvements in the telephone
bid fair to revolutionize telegraphy. By an
experimental wire from New York to Cleveland.
over 700 miles, verbal communication
wits nad with ease and accuracy. The
fund for the relief of the Louisville, Ky.,
sufferers by the flood, amounting to $12,000,
remaining in the hands of the mayor, was
distributed among the sufferers last Monday.
It was used, as far as it would go, in procuring
homes for the poorest."" Secretary
Folger is seriously ill in Washington, suffering
from erysipelas in the face and head,
brought on by a severe cold. Chicago
had sixty-nine murders in 1882, and one execution.
One-third of the murderers were
drunk, and twenty-seven of the murdered
died in a quarrel. Jefferson Davis, exPresident
of the Confederate States, will deliver
the opening address at the meeting
of the Southern Historical Society, in Nashville,
on May 2. The remains of John
Howard Payne reached Washington City
last Saturday. Jere Black, of Pennsylvania,
thinks Conger, of Michigan, is the
coming Republican nominee for President,
and Gen. Hancock the Demccratic nominee.
The Sprague men, in Rhode Island,
say it will take about $200,000 to beat
him for Governor. A big sum for such a
small patch of ground.

Another Feather for Improved Harris' Fertilizer.
J NO. D. McCONNELL, a stay-ahead farmer,
in a letter received a few days since, from
which we are permitted to quote,"says: "I have
been using for nine years, principally chemical
manures. I get better results from" your Improved
Harris, than any fertilizer that I have
tried. In addition to making large yields in
crops, it permanently improves the land*. I commenced
farming after the war on old worn out
lands. It may seem like bldwing, but I will now
in point of fertility, compare farms with any one
in the county."
cotton against money.
The present low price of cotton and the large
excess of supply above the absolute wants of the
world, indicate "lower, at least no better prices
for the crop of 1883. If the short crop of 1881
did not create a boom in the staple, nothing short
of disaster to the American crop will ever do it.
The bulk of cotton for fertilizers is delivered
from the 1st to the 15th of November. Take these
dates for the past three years, and the average
price of such grade as is generally received in
payment, has not averaged over 84, possibly as
low as 8J cents per pound. At this rate, a ton of
our Dissolved Animal Bone, or Irish Bone, for
300 pounds of cotton, would make the time price
in money from $24.75 to 825.50 per ton. We hold,
therefore, and we think with good show of reason,
that it is the policy of the farmer to make contracts
for Acid Phosphate and Guano to be paid
in cotton. We are offering the Irish Bone for 300
pounds of middling cotton, and Ammoniated
Bone for 400 pounds middling cotton.
