un constitutional Discrimination.?,
A decision was rendered by the Supreme
Court of the United States last week?the
opinion delivered by Justice Harlan?in the
(use of Jno. Bush, plaintiff, in error, vs. the
Commonwealth of Kentucky which arose
oat' of th? indictment of a colored man for
the murder of a white child. The counsel
for the prisoner in the circuit court of Fayette
county, Ky., moved to quash the indictment
for the reason that the graild jury
which found it was selected by virtue of a
State law from white-citizens of the county,
exclusively, in violation of the 14th amendment
to the Federal Constitution. The motion
to quash was overruled and the ruling
was sustained in the State. Court of Appeals.
The Supreme Court, however, reversed the
judgment of the latter and holds that the
motion to quash should have been granted,
for the reason that the State had twice enacted
lawB ^consistent with the 14thamendment,
and it must be presumed that the
officer to whom was committed the selection
of the jury in this case acted in conformity
with these unconstitutional. State
law^ ln discriminating against colored persons.

GOOD AUTHORITY.
Aiotber Feather for Improved Harris' Fertilizer.
J NO. D. McCOXNELL, a stay-ahead farmer,
in a letter received a few days since, from
which we are permitted to quote, says: "I have
been using for nine years, principally chemical
| manures. I get better results from your Improved
Harris, than any fertilizer tliat I have
| tried. In addition to making large yields in
crops, it permanently improves the land. I commenced
farming after the war on old worn out
lands. It may seem like blowing, but I will now
in pointof fertility, compare farms with any one
in the county."
THE GENTLEMAN IS RIGHT.
A gentleman, a few days since, in our hearing,
remarked that "he could not afiord to use the low
priced Acids?too much depended on his crop to
make experiments." The gentleman is right.
To assert that all Phosphates are the same, or
equally valuable as fertilizers is like saying that
a Yankee-made, split-leather, paper-soled broganisasgood
as a shoe made by our old friend
YYrarliek, of full stock upper, and oak tanned
solos. Like the shoe, the value of the Acid Phos
phate is determined by what it contains and how
it is manipulated or made. All Acid Phosphates,
except that made from animal hones, contain at
best, but two fertilizing principles, viz.: Available
Phosphoric Acid and Soluble Bone Phosphate
of Lime, and their worth both as manures and in
dollars and cents, depend on the amount of these
ingredients that they contain. The article, therefore,
that shows bv analysis, the greatest per
cent, of these principles, must necessarily be the
most as a fertilizing agent, and command a higher
price in the market. We claim for the Acid
we sell?
1st. That it is a pure animal bone goods.
2nd. That animal bones produce fertilizing
principles or elements in greater quantities than
Phosphate Rock.
3rd. On this account it shows more Phosphoric
Acid and Bone Phosphate of Lime than Acids
made from Rock.
4th. Being manufactured from unsteamed or
raw bones, it contains a decided per cent, of ammonia,
something that cannot be found in the
South Carolina Rock.
5th. That taking all these facts into consideration,
it is cheaper, as a fertilizer, at the price at
which we are offering it, than any goods on the
market. J NO. C. KUYKEXDAL.
