? Ashe county produces 1,646,000 pounds of
copper yearly.
?Airs. Lazarus Sink was drowned near Winston
recently in attempting to cross a stream.
Two sons and two daughters escaped.
?It is asserted upon the theory of a wellinformed
agriculturist that corn will sell in
Hyde county this fall at ten cents per bushel.
? Mrs. Locket Williams died in Warrenton
on the 31st ult., from the effects of an overdose
of morphine taken by mistake for qui?.

? CoL J. N. Whiliford, of Jones county, has
succeeded in raising a sample of sea island
cotton. The plant is well boiled and the weed
is said to be fine. The seed was purchased at
the Atlanta Exposition.
? Andrew J. Walker, colored, who killed
Titus Davis, also colored, in Wilmington, on
July 14, while Davis was attempting to steal
Walker's poultry, has been tried on the charge
of murder and acauitted.
? Says the Greensboro Patriot of Saturday:
Inquiry among knowing railroad officials fails
to discover the shadow of a foundation for the
rumored sale of the Richmond and Danville
railroad to the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad
Company.
? On Sunday evening last Mr. T. C. Orr, a
quiet and good citizen, living about a mile
from,the village of Lillington, Render couuty,
attempted to correct a refractory and unruly
son .of about^ 17 years, when the boy turned
upon him "with a knife, almost disemboweling
the old man.
? There was a large political meeting at
Morganton, in Burke county, on the 7th,
which is understood to be the formal opening
of the State campaign, on the part of the
"Liberal" leaders. The meeting continued
for five hours, the principal speakers being
Gen. Thomas L. Clingman and Gen. J. M.
Leach.
? Prof. J. H. Bailey, formerly a well known
showman, and proprietor of the "Bailey
Troupe," "Bailey's Varieties," etc.; also,
at one time a hotel proprietor in Wilmington,

but more latterly a proiessor ui tuc ?i t ui trancing,
died at his residence in that city, after
a lingering illness, on Sunday last. Prof.
Bailey had many warm friends, and leaves a
wife and quite a number of children.
? At a meeting in Charlotte, last Friday, of
the creditors of the Lawrence and Woodlawn
mills, in Gaston county, Col. McLure, president
of the Bank of Chester in the chair, after
a protracted discussion, the following resolution
was passed : That it is to the interest of
the creditors that a receiver be appointed of
the property of the Lawrence and Woodlawn
mills to operate the same for such a length of
time as will demonstrate whether or not the
same can be operated at a profit or until the
same can be sold.
CONGRESSIONAL COXVENTION.
CnESTER, August 16, 8 A. M.?The Convention
of the Fifth Congressional district
met here yesterday, and after organization
nominations were finally closed with the following
names: Wilson, Erwin, Hemphill,
Prince and Farrow. On the 49th ballot, at 10
last night, the vote Btood Hemphill, 18;
Wilson, 13 ; Prince, 7; Erwin, 4, when the
Convention adjourned until 9 this morning.
