the crowd made a rush to that point, but about 121 o'clock the prisoner was quietly walked through the basement and through the centre of the new building, where a carriage was in waitiug, and taken back to the jail. Mr. Stevenson Johnson, of Chicago, law partner of Emory Storrs, has arrived in the city for the purpose of taking part in the defence of Guiteau. While Guiteau was being arraigned a large sized man approached some of the officers of the Court and asked for the loan of a pistol. His inquiries causing suspicion, he was taken to police headquarters, where he gave his Dame as George H. Beuhard, and showed a diploma as a lawyer issued to him June 23d, in Columbus, Ohio. He said that he fought in VJttrnctU S regJlUCUb, auu ouuucu gunshot wounds iu his legs aud a bayonet would in the side of his head, which he said he received at the battle of Shiloh. He has been doing clerical work for a lawyer in this city. He heard that Guiteau was to be arraigned to-day and he intended to get a "bull-dog" pistol and shoot him, at the City Hall. He took his diploma with him to ensure getting into the Court room as a member of the bar. He had evidently been drinking. The Thorn well Orphanage.?From the sixth annual report of the Thornwell Orphanage, located iu Clinton, S. 0., it will appear that there have been thirty orphaus under its care, three having been dismissed and six received during the year. These have been educated, clothed, boarded, trained in various arts, domestic and otherwise, and every possible expense met at an average cost of $68.75 each. For this sura, they have received a first rate English education, and have been physically and personally cared for, for the entire year of twelve months. During the year, Faith Cottage for the boys has been erected at a total cost of $1500. As soon as the Orphans' Seminary, a building for school and chapel purposes, is erected, the number of inmates can be materially increased. Remember that this institution is supported by voluntary gifa. What you give goes directly to the support of the orphans, and not to pay any officers. Thirteen counties of this State, five States and five different denora inations (of parents) are represented among our children. Boxes of clothing, provisions of any kind, and of course, money, would be very acceptable, just now. Send to Rev. W. P. Jacobs, Clinton, S. C. Alston, Fairfield Co., S. C., Feb., 1880. Dr. L. T.
