THE COTTON CROP.
The New Orleans Democrat of last Satur
day publishes special telegraphic crop reports
from sixty-two centres of cotton districts,
giving the condition of the crop to date. The
following is a summary of the reports:
Alabama.?Reports from 11 counties all
report cotton opening fast, and all but one
fruiting well. Three report a slight increase
in acreage and weather generally good ; five
report slight damage from drought, causing
shedding, eight from rust, and six from
worms?one badly. The crop is generally
earlier than last year?about ten days?and
the quality is good Three counties report a
yield of about half a crop, one of two-thirds,
aud three a yield better than last year.
Labor generally is good and plentiful. Picking
was general in two counties.
Louisiana.?Returns have been received
from 20 Parishes. Two report the plant
small and opening poorly, eight as opeuing
well and rapidly?in some cases prematurely ;
six report cotton fruiting well. One Parish
reports a slight increase in acreage. The
weather has beeu very good, especially for
picking. Seven Parishes report damage from
drought, one from rust, two from worms aud
onp frnm nheddin?. The eeneral quality of
the cotton crop is better than last year. Labor
is reported as sufficient in all but one
Parish. Picking had begun in eight Parishes.
Three Parishes report a larger yield
than last year, two the sarne, four a small
decrease, one a decrease of twenty per cent.,
two a decrease of twenty-five per cent., one a
decrease of thirty-three per cent., one of fifty,
oue of sixty and one of sixty-six per cent.
Arkansas.?Returns from 27 counties report
that cotton is opening slowly and that
stands are not good. One county reports an
increase in acreage of 25 per cent., and 21 of
7 per cent. Considerable shedding is reported.
The cob^ition of the crop is 30 per cent,
less favorable than that of last year. The
yield is 25 percent, less. Picking had begun
generally throughout the State.
Texas.?Returns from a number of central
points show cotton to be fruiting badly in one
section and well in one, opening well in two
sections and prematurely in one. A slight
increase in acreage is reported. Considerable
damage is reported from drought and shedding.
Two sections reported an increased
yield as compared with last year, two a decrease
of 25, and two a decrease of 30 per
cent. '
Mississippi.?Returns were received from 17
counties. Nine report cotton fruiting poorly;
all report it opening rapidly and prematurely.
The stand is reported good in 3 counties.
One county reports an increase in acreage of
4 per cent., and others about the same acreage

from rain, six from drought, six from worms,
two suffering badly, four from shedding, and
two from rust. The crop is generally ten
days earlier than last year. Labor is good
and sufficient. One county reports an increased
yield of ten per cent., two an average
yield, a decrease from last year, 1 a decrease
of 10 per cent., 1 of 20, 1 of 30, 1 of 33, 1
of 5 and 1 of 75 per cent.
Tennessee.?Cotton is suffering from
drought, causing the bolls to shed prematurely.
Crops will be gathered earlier than usual.
There is a slight increase in acreage, but crops
will be short in several sections one-third.
The quality of staple is excellent.
Florida.?The stand good and cotton is
fruiting and opening well. The yield will be
about one-half a bale to the acre. Worms
have appeared, but are doing no harm. The
weather is favorable.
