CARD FROM MR. J. R. SCHORB.
Mr. L. M. Grist : If it were not that,
from your remarks upon the recent election,
I appear m the unenviable light of being the
only one willing to run upon the ticket which
was out in opposition to the one published in
the Enquirer, and which was defeated, I
would not trouble you ; especially as I am
equally averse to appearing now as one who
tries to cover a defeat by some vain or trifling
plea. Permit me, therefore, injustice to myself,
simply to say, that in no sense of the
word was I a candidate for reelectiou ; hut, i
on the contrary, discouraged the use of my
name. The sentiments expressed to you in a
conversation many days before the election,
I expressed freely to others with whom I had
occasion to converse on the subject. Many
persons declared that, nevertheless, they
would use my name in the election. As I
saw no probability of being elected, I did net
trouble myself any farther. Now as my ambition
is gratified, the narrow escape I made
rather elates me, and I cannot but express my
gratification and thanks to those friends who,
contrary to my wishes, voted for me. And
thanks to all who by their confidence and
good will encouraged me in my official duties
for several years past. Yours,
J. R. Sciiorb.
ttaf* In A , one of Florida's seaport towns,
there lived in ante bellum days, a wealthy but
very eccentric old gentleman, who, on one occasion,
being quite sick, awoke his wife in the
middle of the uight, with a tremendous uproar.
To her anxious inquiry as to the cause of his
excitement, he testily replied that, "he had
not thought much about his illness, until he
had just happened to remember that, in case
he should die, the town could not afford a decent
coffin in which to bury him." That man was
bilious. A few doses of Hill's Hepatic
# Panacea would have cured him, and caused
him to forgeUthat there were such things as
coffins. For sale by John C. Kuykendal.
