COLUMBIA FEMALE COLLEGE.
Editor YorkvilleEnquirer: Allusion
has been made in the journals of the State,
to the existence of typhoid fever in Columbia,
and especially in the Columbia Female
College; and the apprehension is, that a wrong
impression might result therefrom in regard
to the health of the city and of the institution
in question. If there is a case of fever
at this time in the city, your correspondent
does not know it He resides in the immediate
vicinity of the College and where the
cases have occurred?one of these proving fatal,
the young lady having come to the College
in declining health ; and as an independent
and dispassionate spectator, he is prepared
to endorse the general assurance that
this fever has arisen, seemingly, without specific,
visible cause, as it often does; and the
following statement of the Rev. Dr. Jones,
respecting its existence in the College, he
most heartily commends to the confidence of
the public;
"Tfiere is nothing which even the most credulous
might accept as a cause for fever about the
premises of the College or in the neighborhood,
whiohhas not existed for years; and the absenoe
of fever, even the almqet perfect health of onr pupils,
daring these years, will satisfy any thinking
man that typhoid fever has visited Columbia this
summer, as it does occasionally visit other perfectly
healthy sections of the State, without any
assignable cause; an unwelcome guest, whose
coming Is without announcement, and whose departure
is as sodden and frequently permanent.
So satisfied am I of the general healtnfhlnese of
the College location, that, though no longer connected
with the institution, I purpose sending
my daughter hack on- the opening of the next
session.
As you are, to ;doubt, informed, the College
buildiug is one of the largest nod finest iD ;the
South, admirably, located, constructed, ventilated,
and managed by a most judicious and
humane president, and a board of trustees,
composed of the first gentlemen of the State.

vacation, will undergo thorough renovation,
and be opened in the fall under the presidency
of one of the most experienced educators
in the South, Professor James L. Jones, A.
M., of Georgia, with a select and strong faculty.
The patronage of the college has generally
come from the best classes in society, as the
catalogue will indicate; and entire satisfaction
has been given to patrons. So much so, that
the undersigned expects to send several to the
institution when the next session opens, and
would advise his friends, who wish their children
liberally educated, under the most favorable
auspices, to do likewise. Kophe.

An Important Cure by Dr. Tutt's Expectorant.?We
have been informed by
Mrs. Williams, grand daughter of Gen. Israel
Putnam, that she suffered for many years with
Asthma, accompanied with great difficulty of
breathing. Indeed, she says it prevented her
from lying in a recumbent position, and often
suffocation appeared inevitable, for which she
t's Expectorant. The relief was* so
great that she was encouraged to persevere
in its use until every vestige of the painful
disease was entirely removed.
_ "We can not speak too highly of this val^TTfftrle~prepftration
of Dr. Tutt, aud for the
sake of suffering humanity hope that it may
become more generally known."?Christian

A Flower that Changes Its Color.
Botany is a division of natural science which
treats of plants, and a study of vegetable phisiol- ('
ogy must be the foundation of botanical knowl- :
edge?a study only possible by theimprovements j 1
in the microscope and in organic chemistry. As : ]
plants are not scattered haphazard over the earth, 1
botanical geography must be studied, and, with
this, plant history. Botany may be applied in the
wants of every day life, as in agriculture, horti- (
culture, or medical botany. Animals often ex- E
hibit a marvelous instinct in selecting medicinal
herbs, and an observation of their habits has often,
even in the present time, led to most valuable discoveries.
And should man, with his knowledge j
and appliances, fail to discover leas than the brute? (
It is of medical botany we would speak, or of the i
HEPATINE PLANT, discovered in Southern j l
Nubia, the flower of which changes its color with
every change of the atmosphere. The remarkable
changes and variations of this plant and flower (
have been for years our special study, resulting ,
in the discovery of its possession of wonderful 1
medical properties, the existence and value of
which have heretofore been unknown to medical
science. After much labor and scientific investi- ]
gation, we have succeeded in extracting its pecu- ]
liar medicinal principles, which is a specific and j
cure for all diseases of the Liver, Stomach and r
Bowels; a permanent cure for Dyspepsia, Spleen, j
Indigestion, Constipation, Jaundice, and all Bil
ious Complaints. Of course we cannot send a
living flower of this plant to all who read of Hep- .
atiue; but all who send their address to Merrell
<ft Couden, Philadelphia, Pa., with a three-cent .
stamp for return postage, we will send free a facsimile
of the flower, that will change its color just ,
the same as the real Hepatine Flower. The med- [
icine, Merrell's Hepatine, is for sale by JOHN
C. KUYKENDAL, Yorkville, S. C., and will .
cure all diseases of the Liver.

WHAT WE AHE GOING TO DO !
WE propose to give a list of those persons who
do not pay us according to promise. We
can't get a chance to see them, as they keep at a
distance; so we will be obliged to call their name3
through the paper, if they do not call and settle.
We have begged?yes, implored them to give us {
our money. 'Tis hard to have to beg for that
which is our own, but we will continue to beg,
and do it in such a way that some will give us our
money. We mean what we say.
W. H. <ft J. P. HERNDON.
HOW TO SETTLE^ (

give us a little. By paying in installments,
von will soon be out of our debt and free once
more. Try that plan.

A FACT.
THE man who won't pay his debts is guilty of

our books. However, time will tell. 1
