Yorkville enquirer. [volume] (Yorkville, S.C.) 1855-2006, March 09, 1876, Image 3
from his time of taking command of the array
preceding the seven days' battles around
Richmond, until the surrender of his sword
at Appomattox, was vividly narrated, and
those who were familiar with the momentous
events of those terrible years had no difficulty
in seeing the faithfulness of the picture.
The lecturer then spoke of the distinguishing
traits of oharacter of the great Virginian,
which were foresight, caution, firmness and
bravery. Time and space do not permit of
any additional comments upon this admirable
lecture. Suffice it to say, it was worthy
of the man the greatness of whose deeds has
challenged the admiration of the world, and
worthy of the reputation Dr. Furman has
won in the field of literature.
The Democracy of Blackstock's township
have organized a club, and elected Mr. R. T.
Mock bee, President; Mr. John Ross, VieePresident;
Mr. J. E. Craig, Secretary, and
Mr. R. K. DeBardelaben, Treasurer. Messrs.
Mockbee, DeBardelaben and John Carroll
were chosen delegates to the County Convention
that assembles to-day at this place.
The Democracy of Halsellville township
effected an organization of a club in the election
of Mr. J. S. McLure, President, and Mr.
J. C. McAfee, Secretary and Treasurer.
Messrs. McLure, McAfee and J. G. McAliley
j were chosen delegates to the County Convention.
The resolutions offered by ex-Governor
Perry at a receut Democratic meeting at
Greenville and adopted, were endorsed.
A meeting of the Chester Sabre Club,
which numbers seventy-one members, was
held on Saturday. A constitution and by^
laws for the government of the club was
adopted. A meeting for the inspection of
sabres will.be held on the 1st Saturday in
April, and a meeting for drill be held on the
1st Saturday in May.
H9H Saturday was the day for the holding of
the preliminary examination in the case of
James Kinard, who bad been arrested and
HpBB lodged in jail, charged with conspiracy to
defraud the county. The accused waived the
examination, and gave bond for bis appearance
for trial at the next term of the Court
of General Sessions. The charge against him
is based upon his testimony in the case of
Pleasant Poland, charged, as I have already
stated, with taking school certificates from
the offioe of the County Treasurer. Judge
T. J. Mackey is the head and front of these
proqeputions, and he avows his determination
to push them to the bitter end, regardless of
the persons that may be affected thereby. In
the immortal words of President Grant, the
people say to him, "Let no guilty man escape."
\i> '
The County Democratic Convention assembled
in the Court House at this place to-day.
J. J. Hemphill, Esq., was elected President;
Major Julius Mills, Vice-President; and W.
A. Senders, Esq., Secretary. The country
delegates did not relish the idea of Chester
precinct having six delegates, while the other
c precincts were only allowed three. They <were
unwilling to admit for a time that any difference
should be made in favor of this precinct,
in consequence of the large number of votes
polled here; but they finally yielded their objections,
and all things moved on with an undisturbed
serenity^ MajorS. P. Hamilton, a
member of the State Democratic Executive
Committee, was invited by the Convention to
deliver an address, giving the objects and
plans of the Democratic party of the State,
which he did in an interesting way. An executive
committee, consisting of Major Julius
Mi lb, and Messrs. W. S. Gregg, John Knox,
C. W. McFadden and R. T. Mockbee, were
appointed by the Convention. This honorable
body then adjourned to meet on the 1st
Monday in April.
Two tracts of land were sold by the Sheriff
to-day. One tract, belonging to Major J. W.
Carter, and containing 218 acres, brought
. $125. Another tract belonging to ?? Orr.
anu ouutai^og en;hups, '
the sale of land, a considerable quantity of
^ whisky aud brandy, belonging to John Lilley,
an inmate of the Penitentiary, was disposed
of under execution at high prices. A
gallon of the ardent exceeded in value an
acre of land. '
Mrs. Martha K. Wilkes, wife of Mr. J.
Wesley Wilkes, of Baton Rouge, in this
county, departed this life on the 1st instant.
Her death is deeply deplored by relatives and
friends. Qui.
A Baptist Preacher Testifies.?Dr.
Tutt .-?Dear SirHaving used in my family
for six years your Expectorant, I deem it due
to yourself and the public to state that I have
uniformly found it efficient in relieving and
curing pulmonary diseases. I am strictly opposed
to quackery, but touching this very
pleasant and excellent medicine "I have testified
that which I do know and that which I
have experienced." Respectfully yours,
J. C. Hargroves,
Pastor Baptist Church, Elmira.N. Y.

A Cold Seems a Small Affair.?Most
people neglect it. Who minds it? Yet a
cold may turn to Consumption, and then follows
almost certain death. Take a cold in
time, then ; that is, take Dr. D. Jayne's Expectorant,
the well known standard remedy
for Coughs, Colds, Consumption, Asthma,
Bronchitis, and all Pulmonary Complaints,
and your Cold will disappear, as well as all
apprehensions of danger.

A Lire Music House.
Messrs. Ludden <fe Bates, proprietors of the
Grkat Southern Music House at Savannah,
Ga., are fairly entitled to the honor of being the
e most enterprising men in the trade. Here they
are in these dreadful hard times actually doing a
larger trade than ever before. The reason why, is
found in the fact that the harder times get the
cheaper they sell, and musical people throughout
the South have found out that their prices are always
the lowest.
They have just largely reduced cash prices on
Pianos and Groans, and offer inducements such
as have never been known in the South. Those
who ever want to purchase should, by all means,
correspond with them.

There is no person living but what suffers more
or less with Lung Disease, Coughs, Colds or Consumption,
yet some would die rather than nay 75
cents for a bottle of medicine that woula cure
them. Dr. A. Boscheo's German Syrup has lately
been introduced into this country from Ger- i

one thaX try it. If you doubt what we say in
