made an argument in which he expressed his
disappointment and mortification at the decision
of the court, and concluded with the
statement that they were unable to meet the
dharges without time for preparation, asking
that this question be considered.
. Whittemore moved that the trial be adjourned
until the 29th instant.
After consultation, the counsel for the defence
declared that it was impossible for them
to go into the trial before the 14th of March.
After argument by Messrs. Pope, Campbell
and Rion for the defence, and by Elliott for
the House of Representatives, Whittemore
amended his previous motion, so as to adjourn
the trial until March 7th.
Andrews moved to make it the 14th of
March, which motion was voted upon and lost,
yeas 10, nays 18. The vote was then taken
on the question of adjourning the trial to the
7th of March, which was carried; yeas 24,
nays 4.
The Senate then adjourned till 11 o'clock
A. M. to-morrow.
In the House, the only matter of interest
was the discussion of the adaption of the report
of the committee on privileges and elections
on the charges against Robertson, together
with the recdmmendation of the committee
for his expulsion. Pending the discussion
the House adjourned till 7 o'clock tonight.
At the evening session there was no
quorum and the House adjourned till 11 A.
M. to-morrow.
Friday, February 25.
In the Senate, the appropriation bill passed
its second reading. The most important
amendments adopted are as follows: For expenses
incurred under the act to reduce the
public debt, $2,500 in place of $3,000; for the
support of the State Penitentiary, $40,000 in
place of $30,000; for the Deaf, Dumb and
Blind Asylum, $5,000; for insurance and repairs
on the University building, $1,000 in
place of $2,000 ; for miscellaneous expenses
connected with the University, $1,000 in place
of $1,500 ; for the State Normal School, $15,000
in place of $10,000. The section provi
ding $10,000 for the payment of interest on
the bonds of the State Agricultural College
and Mechanics' Institute was stricken out.
For public printing $25,000 in place of $50,000.
The section providing $1,200 for putting
up book-cases in the House of Representatives
was stricken out. Two additional sections
were added, the first providing $1,000 to
meet the expenses of the impeachment trial
and $4,000 to pay rewards offered by the Governor;
and the second providing $4,000 for
the payment of the expenses incurred nnder
the provisions of the act to provide for the
payment of certain claimsagaiust the State.
In the House, the consideration of the
Robertson matter was resumed. Hamilton,
of Beaufort, made a strong speech against
Robertson, who, then, in his own defence,
spoke for over an hour. No vote was reached
up to the hour of adjournment, when the
House took a recess until 7 P. M.
At 7 P. M. the House re-assembled. Hayne
opened with an argument against Robertson,
and was followed by Freeman in a strong

Davis and Brayton then made speeches in his
defence. After every effort to save hira had
been exhausted, the House came to a vote,
which resulted in the expulsion of Robertson,
the vote standing 56 for expulsion and 25
against it. The Conservatives voted solidly
for expulsion, and, with one or two exceptions,
those voting for Robertson were of the lower
order of Radicals. A few dodged the vote.
Saturday, February 26.
In the Senate, the proceedings present
nothing of special interest.
In the House, a message was received
from the Governor stating that he had approved
the following acts and ioint resolu
