CHANGE OP POST-OFFICE.
The post-office in litis county, heretofore
known as New House, ha3 been moved from
the old location to Whitaker's Station on the
Air-Line Railroad, and is now supplied by
the railroad, as well as the weekly mail from
this place. Hereafter all matter intended for
New House, should be directed to Whitaker's.
RECOVERING.
Mary Louise, the little daughter of Col.
Coward, who sustained very serious injuries
by falling from the balcony of the second
story of the King's Mouutain school-building,
several weeks ago?fracturing her skull and
breaking one arm?is, we are pleased to learn,
in a fair way to recover, and is now regarded
out of danger.
THE FIRE AT BLACK'S STATION.
We have received a note from Mr. Ira
Hardin, whose house was burnt on the night
of the 12th instant, in which he expresses the
belief that the fire was not the work of an
incendiary, as was stated in a paragraph we
published last week; but that it had its
origin from a box of matches which happen
ed to be convenient for a thoughtless rat to
nibble, and the matches igniting, set fire to
the house. The fire originated near the roof,
where an incendiary could not have conveniently
applied the torch. Mr. Hardin did
not save any thing from the burning building,
aud his loss is from S1000 to S1500.
SAVINGS BANK DIVIDEND.
On Tuesday last, Messrs. Jetferys & Metts,
who have been selected for the performance
of the duty, commenced paying to depositors
iu the Yorkville Brauch of the Citizens' Savings
Bank, the dividend of twenty-five per
cent., in accordance with the announcement
of the trustee, made several days ago. All
depositors in the Yorkville Brauch, no matter
where they may reside, will be paid here, by
Messrs. Jefferys & Metts, the amount to which
they are eutitled. Applicants must present
- certificate or pass-book as evidence of their
claim. We learn that the sum to be disbursed
here on account of the dividend just declared
amounts toS28,000.
NEW BLACKSMITH SHOP.
Nothing affords us more pleasure than to
note the arrival in our midst of good mechanics,
who come with a view to open shops and
carry on their business. While nothing goes
further to build up a town than the presence
of industrious mechanics, there is also ample
room here for tradesmen of all the various
branches. Mr. Cross, whose arrival here we
noticed a few weeks ago, has erected a blacksmith
shop, and is now regularly at work.
Mr. Cross furnishes the best recommendations
as to his ability to do all kinds of work in
iron, from horse-shoeing to the repairing of
engines and machinery. A specimen of his
skill may be seen at the Enquirer office, in
the shape of a one-horse steam engine, which
is a model of beauty and perfection. We
direct attention to his advertisement in another
column.

COUNTY BONDS.
The bonds of York county, in aid of the;
Chester and Lenoir Narrow Gauge Railroad, j
are now in the market, and present a safe and !
profitable means for investment. Of their va- j
li<Uty there is no question, while the ability j
of the county to meet them is equally certain.
The bonds are in the sum of one hundred
dollars each, affording an opportunity for
those of limited means to invest in them, as
well as the capitalist, and bear interest, payable
annually, at the rate of seven per cent,
per annum, while the coupons are receivable
inpayment of county taxes. It is desirable
on the part of the managers of the road to ;
realize as much as possible on these bonds, j
not only as a matter of economy to the enter- j
prise which they are designed to aid ; but also
for the benefit of the people. As the bonds
will inostjcertainly be sold, should they be
sacrificed in a distant market, and not realize
a sura sufficient for the purpose for which they
are issued, it would only be disastrous for all |
concerned. Hence the desire of disposing of;
them at home, instead of making sale of them j
to brokers and stock-dealers, amongst whom, |
for speculative purposes, county bonds, how-'
ever valid and safe as an investment, are j
quoted at figures too low to justify a sale, if i
it can possibly be avoided, and make it ad-:
vantageous to the people they are intended to
benefit. That the bouds cau be easily disposed
of at the money centres, either by sale or
hypothecation, there is not the slightest doubt;
but, as we have intimated, at prices too low to
meet the demands of the company, as well, in
fact, as being below their actual value. The
importance of this fact has already awakened
several of our most prudent citizens, and
withiu the past week H. F. Adickes, Joseph ;
Herndon, J. F. Wallace, John II. Adams,
James L. Clark, Peyton B. Darwin, Thomas j
S. Jeft'erys and L. M. Grist have each made j
arrangements for investing in the bonds, at the
rate of $80 for each hundred dollars, all the
funds they can spare for permanent investment.
Others in town have signified a willingness
to take the bouds at the same rate; and we
see no reason why they cannot all be taken j
in the county by our own people, thus preventing
sacrifice to the enterprise, and furnish-'
ing the most certain and reliable investment
to all having a surplus of funds which they ;
would profitably employ. Bonds can be pro- i
cured of Messrs. Jefferys & Metis, Col. W. 1
McCorkle, Mr. H. F. Adickes, or L. M. Grij
who will furnish any information purchase
may desire.
Microscopic Writing.?Mr. Willia
Webb, of London, has produced a curiosity i
microscopic writing. He has aceomplishe
the feat by means of machinery on glass, wil
the aid of a diamond. The writing consists i
the Lord's Prayer, which is written on gla
in a space equal to one two hundred and niu
ty-fourth part of an inch in length by 01
four hundred and fortieth part of an inch i
width, a space corresponding to the dot ov<
the printed letter i. The dot of writing hi
been enlarged by means of the photograph s
as to occupy a space of about two inches lot
by one and a half inches broad. The phot
graph brings the words out legibly, the nur
ber of letters being 227. Such is the finene
of the original writing that 29,431,458 lette
withiu the same way would only cover or
square inch of glass surface. The whole B
ble, including the Old and New Testament
contain 3,466,580 letters; therefore Mr. Wet
could write the entire contents of more thti
eight Bibles within the space of one squai
iuch. Two specimen plates of this inicrosco;
ic writing have been produced for the Unite
States Museum, at Washington, at a cost <
850 each. The Webb machine, howeve
does not equal, in the fineuess of writing <
the perfection it has attained, a similar m:
chine, the invention of Mr. Peters, a wealth
banker of London. This machine produce
writing as long since as 1855, nearly thn
times as fine as that of Mr. Webb. It wi
competent to engrave the entire contents i
the Bible, twenty-two times over, within tl
space of a single square inch.
