The "Lovry Gang"?Who and What ; They Are? The Robin Hood of a Dismal Swamp.?For nearly fifteen years past, Robeson county, North Carolina, has been infested with a gang of desperadoes. Some of the later bloody deeds of this band have been telegraphed as Ku-Klux outrages, and have formed an important part of the stock in trade of Ku-Klux agitators. This gang is. com posed of whites, blacks, and raulattoes, with,; in the case of the leaders, an admixture of! Indian blood. They inhabit a swamp, in ! which pursuit is quite useless. On the Western boundary of this swamp, theLowry family has resided from Colonial times; at first, as respectable tanners, and later, as thieves and outlaws. They are of Portuguese stock, but intermixed with the Indian several generations back, and since have received an infusion of negro blood. Allan Lowry, the father of the six boys now in the band, seems to have been, by instinct and in appearance, more of an Indian than anything else. Heniy Berrv Lowry, the youngest brother, is the acknowledged leader of the gang. At the commencement of the late war, these Lowrys, with a number of mulatto cousins, became more bold and outrageous in their depredations. Attempts to capture them resulted iu the murder of the would-be captors. ?; ? .* r* 4 m < .v in tne winter or 1000-04, tne gang was joined by some escaped Federal prisoners, from Florence, S. C. This increased their number to about thirty. They now maintained themselves by open ana undisguised plunder, killing stock, robbing houses and individuals. At last, the citizens banded to hunt them down, and a fight took place on the border of the swamp, in which old Allan Lowry and the oldest son, "Bill," were killed. When the war ended, the Federal soldiers left the gang and went North". The remainder were three Lowrys, three Oxendines, "Boss" Strong, and George Applewhite, a coal-black negro, who married a sister of the ! Lowrys. Since then, several of the gang have been captured, but all broke jail except Henderson Oxendine, who was executed for murder in March, and Calvin Oxendine, who is 1 now in jail at Wilmington, charged with the j musder of ex-Sheriff King, of Robeson coun- ] ty? The United States troops, lately stationed ; in Robeson, once attempted to take the outlaws. These shot and killed a citizen, named Taylor, within 200 yards of the soldiers' camp. They were at once ordered under arms, and started for the scene of murder. By the time i they got there, tho outlaws were, of course, j deep in the heart of the swamp. Since the , war, the gang have committed eight murders, 1 besides wounding a number of persons, beating and maltreating others, and averaging, at least, one robbery per week. All the members of the gang belong to the Union League, and all the men who have been murdered, except one, Mr. Inman, were Democrats. ACTS OF THE LEGISLATURE-OFFICIAL. ! Fourteenth Volume of the ] Statutes of this State, at a cost not exceeding ' one hundred and ninety dollars. ' Sec. 2. That the Treasurer of the State be, < and he is hereby authorized and directed to , pay the amount, named in the preceding Sec- \ tion, out of any public funds not otherwise ap- t propriated, on receipt of sufficient evidence of ( the completion of the work. Approved March 9,1871. JOINT RESOLUTION To extend the time for the completion of the Port Royal Railroad. Be it resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, now met and sitting in General Assembly, , and by the authority of the same, That the ; time for the completion of the Port Royal Railroad, and every part thereof, is hereby extended foT the period of two years from the passage of this Resolution. Approved March 9, 1871. OUR PRIZE PLAN. The name of every yearly subscriber, who has paid in advance, is placed in a box provided for the purpose, and on each Wednesday morning, after thoroughly mixing the names, one name is drawn from the box, the name so drawn being entitled to a prize of FIVE DOLLARS. As names are added to the subscription list, throughout the current year, they will be placed in the box, and all will have an equal chance in each drawing. When a person subscribes for more than one copy, he will be entitled to the prize that may be drawn in the name of the person to whom the paper is sent, unless he gives directions to the contrary.
