"We don't want any trouble with the General j
Government. We have had enough of war, j
and we want peace ; but we can't sit still aqd j
see & gang of thieves,, sustained by#a horde of,
ignorant niggers, take our property from us." i
I find this to be the general sentiment among i
the white population. They declare that their 1
have nodeeire to iresist the Federal auth?iM
and that their troubles all spring fromHjadj
State and local Government- ^^
An intelligent man, who said ^"^hdped tod
fire the first gun on Fort Sumter, audi seye&J
through the war until Johnston's surrehWfn
flaming out of the wreck of the iS&nfedetac^j
with no other property than a^grayx
talked with me the other day witnmore mod-1
eration than is usually shown. He sai^Ltiied
white people of South Carolina woflld^BPpaa
if Congress would remand the 'Sta^e to &^emj
ritmial condition, and send down spmdL^aaT
from the North to govern it. Or'iftney conld
have a military government no one-would'
object, ftrnothing could be so bad as'a gqyerament
of ignorance, indigence, ana fraud.
If the mas in pow%r would consent to some.
compromise that would give the property aud '
intelligence 01 ise otate a representation in t
the Government, he believed there would bgi
peace; bat if not, he was sure there would be?
bloody times at the next election.
Everybody appears to look to the approaching
Tax-p^yem Convention to devise some
plan of conciliation that will brine harmony
to the State. It is believed that this can be
accomplished by an agreement between the
leaders of both parties upon the following
oourae: 1. That the Ku-Klux outrages shall
cease. There is no doubt that the leading
Democrats .have power to stop them if they
wish to. 2. That the ;(3overnor shall, as finas
ia is his power, remcf?e mconj]tetent and
dishonest local officers, ana appoint in their
places respectable m<& of moderate views.
Ibis he has already commenced doing. 3.
That nothing shall be don8 toward selling the
sterling loan bonds until there are further
o guarantees that the proceeds will be . applied
solely toward the extinguishment of the present
debt of the State, A That an effort shall
be made by the and others to induce
the Legislature tojpass a law providing
for minOrrfcyrepH mentation by a system of
cumulative vbtfcig. The Convention meets on
Tuesday, May 9, and will probably be in session
for three days* Delegates have b'eerr
chosen in all the counties of the State.

Dysentery and Cholera Morbus, and these occurring
when absent from hon^, are very unpleasant.
The Pain Killer may always be reliedupon in
such cases. As soon as you feel the symptoms,
take one teaspoonful ftr a gill of new milk and molasses
and a gill of hot water, stir- well together
and drink hot. Repeat the dose every hour until
relieved. If the pains be severe, bathe tBe back

Fishermen so often exposed to hurts by having
their skin pierced with hooks, and fins offish,'Can
be relieved by bathing with the Pain. Killer as
soon as the accident occurs; in this way the anguish
is soon abated; bathe as often as once in five
