CHARLOTTE, August 18.?CoTTOif?Little offering.
We quote ordinary at 12$ cents, gowi ordinary
131 cents, low middling 141 to 14} cents,
middling scarce at 15} to 16 cents. The Northern
markets are unchanged, though we note slight advance
in Liverpool.
LIVERPOOL, August 15?Evening.?Cotton
firmer but not higher; middling uplands 8} and
8} ; Orleans 81 and 9; sales 12,000 bales; speculation
and export 3,000.
NEW YORK, August 15?Evening.?Cotton
dull; sales 500 bales; middling uplands 19}.
CHARESTON, August 11.?The Crops.?The
cotton crop has continued to develop promisingly,
the general report being good, with, however,
rather more rain than is needed, which, if contin

wanted. The corn crop is generally successful,
with partial complaints, owing to the absence of
rain at the proper time, or too much water in the
low lands-; but the general result of this crop
will be satisfactory. Parties from the interior of
this State and Georgia report the cotton generally
in fine condition, and should events be favorable,
profitable results will be obtained. From the
southwest section of the last, the best producing
district, the accounts, are indifferent, and in some
in9ttboes bad.
Thk Receipts.?The receipts at the cotton
ports for the week up to Friday last, have been
5,740 bales against o,612 the week oefore, "and
1,487 for the week last year. At New Orleans the
arrivals were 918 bales, in contrast with 848 bales
last year. .The total receipts at the ports from 1
September 1, 1889, up to the latest male dates,
were 2,882,373 bales against 2,112,779 bales last
season, showing an increase of 669,494 bales. The
total receipts at the chief southern centres from
September 1, 1869, up to the latest telegraphic intelligence
have been as follows:
1870. 1869.
New Orleans, August 10,; ;...1,139,321. 794,972
Mobile, August 10, 226,645 226,520
Savannah, August 10, 479,469 353,096
Charleston, August 10, 242,248 197,632
Texas, August 10, 244,021 143,017 1
Virginia, August 10, 201,528 160,351 j
The receipts for the corresponding week last
year were 1,753 bales. The arrivals at this port,
for this period, were 11 bags of Sea Islands and
Florldas, and 918 bales of uplands, against ?bags
of Sea Islands and Floridas and 189 bales of upland
last year. These receipts have come as follows
: Say of uplands per South Carolina railroad
874 bales, per Northeastern railroad 40 bales,
Georgetown, (S. C.) 1, Savannah 3, of Sea Islands
and Floridas 11.
The following table shows the quantity of cotton
in sight on the 5th of August, arid at the same
time last year:
1870. 1869.

These figures indicate au increase in the cotton,
in sight of 176,948 bales, compared with the same
date of 1869.
The Cotton Market.?This article has presented
generally dull and depressed features, the
English market showing some disposition to rally
when the war question takes a more promising
aspect for peace. The staple in the foreign market
opened at 7jkl. for midaling uplands, declined
to 7}d., and improved to 8}d.; at New York the
rates commenced at 19} cents and declined to 19}
and 19} cents, while at this port the demand has
been light, the finer qualities being about 18 cents
Eer pound for middling, while the lower grades
ad to be disposed of at rates to, suit buyers, the
latter closing with more enquiry.

Our Manufacturing Interests.
The manufacturers of the North have asked for
and obtained the assistance of the National Government
until they have become a burden to the
people at large, and the tax paid by the United
States for the support of these manufacturers is
equal to all the other taxes put together. Let our
manufacturers make goods of a bettor quality,
and at lower prices, than other manufacturers,
and they can defy competition without GovernLoin.
TIiis. at least, is the plan of Mr. P. P.
ii1cuv ?.v.r. y f
Toale, of Charleston, S. C., tlie largest audtmost
su<*eessful manufacturer of doors, sashes, blinds
and mouldings in the Southern States.
OHOIjBRA.
HOW TO CURE IT.
At the commencement of the Diarrhcea, which
always precedes an attack of the Cholera, take a
teaspoonful of the Pain Killer in sugar and water,
(hot, if convenient) and then bathe freely the
stomach and bowels with the Pain Killer clear.
Should the diarrhcea or cramps continue, repeat
the dose every ten or fifteen minutes until the patient
is relieved. In extreme cases, two or more
* teaspoonfuls may be given at a dose.
The Pain Killer, as an internal remedy, has no
equal. In cases of Cholera, Summer Complaints,
Dvspepsia, Dysentery, Asthma, it cures in one
night, by taking it internally and bathing with it
freelv. Its actiou is like magic, when externally
applied to old Sores, Burns, Scalds, and Sprains,
For Sick Headaehe and Toothache, don't fail to
try it. In short, it is a Pain Killkk.
Directions accompany each bottle.
The Pain Killer is sold by all dealers in Medicine.
Prices, 25 cents, 50 cents and $1 per bottle.

Sinking Slowly.
Diseases that progress rapidly to a crisis are not {
: the only ones to be dreaded. Canker or dry rot
does not blast a tree as suddenly as a stroke of ;.
lightning, but unless arrested, it destroys it as i
certainly; and in like manner chronic debility, i J
although it dbos not kill with the swiftness of yel- i
low fever, is as sure to sap the springs of life event- *
ually as any acute disease, if not checked by in- j j
vigorating medication. There is something ir ex- ^
pressibly touching in the spectacle of premature i
decay. Languor, pallor, emaciation, depression
of spirits, and a distaste for exertion, are its ordi- "
nary symptoms, andth^r should be promptly met
by tonic treatment. The best invigorant and exhilarant
that can be administered in a case of this <
kind is Hostetter's Stomach Bitters. The stimu- s
lating principle of the preparation rouses the dor- s
mant energies of the system, and the.strengthen- s
ing and regulating properties give a permanent
ana healthful impulse to the vital forces thus
brought into play. The failing appetite is reawakened,
the process of digestion and assimilation
are quickened, the quality of the blood is im- t
proved, the secretions become more natural, and 1
every organ that contributes to the nourishment
of tho body undergoes salutary change. By these
means the repair of the physical structure is ef- a
fecfod and its health ana vigor restored. In no [
class of diseases has the beneficent operation of the
Bitters been more marked and striking than
in those characterized by general debility and ner- i
vous prostration. Ladies affected with these ailmants
find in this most wholesome of all tonics
and correctives the safest and surest means of re- I _
lief. It is strong to restore and powerless to injure.
Such is the uniform testimony of "clouds
of witnesses."
