Jty, the symmetry and propriety of the movement
1 he Hon. R. B. Carpenter stands before you as a
n&tive of New England, trained and educated in
Kentucky, a prominent member of the Bar before
the war, and a consistent and earnest Union Republican
throughout that memorable struggle, and
at the present moment. He stands before you as
a man who has laid aside the judicial robe, which :
he has gracefully and ably worn for the last two
years, as the champion of justice so faithfully and j
honorably administered as to subdue all prejudice 1
and elicit the united plaudits of that august and ,
imposing hierarchy of talent and character, the j
Bar of Charleston and of the people of ttat en-;
lightened and venerable city, without distinction I
of race or party. A leading Republican, he has
honorably borne the honors of his party from the ;
organization of the new State government to the ;
present time without fear and without reproach.
Able, zealous and competent, he has stood eminently
as a champion for the fame and honor of
the Republican party, against the prejudioe and 1
corruption which nave degraded it in South Caro- <
Una. -j i
The Hon M. C. Butler, our candidate for Lieutenant
Governor, bears a name honorable and distinguished
in the annals of American history from
the days of the revolution. A name that num- bers
its distinguished warriors and statesmen, its i
martyrs to the cause of American freedom and the ]
honor of the flag of the country, as well as to that ]
of the "Lost Cause," to which he attested the j
sincerity of his devotion by giving to it his labors, ,
his fortune and bis Wood. Himself not the least j
distinguished of his noble race, young, liberal, en- j
lightened and talented, blending most happily the ]
prestige of the past with the progress of the prescnt
and the hope of the future, he is, all things
considered, a most fit and proper representative
man of young Carolina. Placea before the people
us the unanimous nominee of the colored delegates
in the convention, and accepted by that body with (
acclamation and unanimity, ne concentrates to him- ,
self the confidence and esteem of all the good ,
people. j
To the support of this ticket, men of Carolina,
we most earnestly invite you, in the name of that
union and harmony which promises to our stricken, '
bleeding, suffering people, so much of happiness
and prosperity in a peaceful future.
Aaopted by the committee. '

A Stubborn Fact.
There is scarcely any disease in which purgative
medicines are not more or less required, and much
suffering might be prevented were they more generally
used. No person can feel well while a costive
habit of body prevails; besides, it soon'generates
serious diseases which might have been
avoided by a timely use of Cathartic Medicines.
For this purpose Dr. Tutt's Vegetable Liveb
Pills are confidently recommended; they are
mild, safe, prompt and uniform in their action.
They contain no Mercury. Persons may eat and
drink as usual, and they may be taken at any
time.
Count the Cost.
A day's ride in almost any part of our country j
will show more than one practical illustration of
the parable of the man who commenced to build
his castle without counting the cost. Men often
leave out of their calculations such little matters
as doors, blinds, sashes, mouldings, Ac., and in 1
the end find no comfort in the house which they j
have built. Remember, therefore, before building,
to write to P. P. Toale, Charleston, S. C., the
largest manufacturer of doors, Ac., in the Southam
States, for an estimate of the cost of finishing. '

Hearth's Best' Defence.
"The weak oateth herbs," says St. Paul, so that
eighteen hundred years" ago the Value of medial- ,
aal plants was appreciated. In the old Testament '
botanical remedies are repeatedly recommended, but
in iio passage of the sacred history is man j#- |
commended to swallow calomel, or bine-pill, or
my other mineral preparation. The sick were i
lirected to eat herbs to strengthen them, to purlin
them, to heal them, to preserve them. In that "j
lay the art of making vegetable extracts was un- J
mown. The herbal medicines were mere infudons.

rffE extensive use of these Wstchef for the
last fifteen years by Railway Conductors, Eufineers,
and Expressmen, the most exacting of
iVaich-weamrs, has thoroughly itanonstrated the
itrength, steadiness, durability and accuracy of

hese respects, is to decide the question as to the
eal value of these timer-keepers.
More than 450,00d of these Watches are now
peakingibr themselves in the pockets of the people?a
proof and a guarahtee of their superiority

The superior organization and great extent of

o produce Watches at a piioe which renders competition
futile, and those who buy any other
