either to court or avoid conversation, but
whenever he did speak, what he said was directly
to the point and covered the whole
matter in a few words. I saw before being
with him long, that be was exceedingly quick
in perception and direct in purpose, with a
vast deal more of brains than tongue, as ready
as that was at his command."
Fanny Fern's Experience.?Fanny
Fern has not, in the following, had a very
singular experience, perhaps, but it will be
generally voted as natural:
"I used to believe in school friendship.
That delusion ended when Arabella Triplet
told mutual friends that I was years and years
her senior, knowing what a terrible fib she
told. I used to saner pangs of anger because
of woes of beggars. Since that I have seen
one unstrap his leg in an area, and run off
gaily on two legs or his own. Another threw
. a loaf of bread in the gutter; and I saw a
third, who had all day been yelling "Please
assist the blind," carefully examining his collection
of ten cent stamps by the light of a
friendly apple-woman's candle. I used to put
the greatest faith in lovers' vows. Now, I
* do not believe a man means anything he says
to a woman, unless it is something disagreeable.
I used to believe in faithful servants.
Since than I lost all q?y handkerchiefs but one.
I used to believe in beauty. Since then I
have seen a bewitching belle take off half her
hair, all her teeth, the Dest of her complexion, '
two pounds pf cotton batting and a corset." ,

Delays Are Dangerous.
That poor, emaciated Consumptive, who is now
beyond all hope of recovery, might now be hale

Be advised, if you have a cough or oold, get at

you will soon be relieved. Do not put it off.
How to Build Cheap.
Every oue who has any experience in boildiug,
knows to his sorrow that the thousand and one
little items included in the one word finishing,
make fully half the cost of a house, and that illadvised
expenditure in this direction often runs
the bill far above the estimate. To avoid such
trouble and disappointment, buy your blinds,
doors, sashes, and mouldings, direct from the

The Living Machine.
Injure the main, spring of a watch, and every
portion of the works booonies disordered. The
human stomach is to the human .system what
that elastic spring is to the chronometer. It influences
the action of the other organs, and controls,
to a certain extent, the whole living machine.
The comparison may be carried further:
For as the weakness or other imperfections of the
main-spring is indicated on the feoe of the timepiece,
so also is the weakness or other disorder of
;he stomach betrayed by the ftice of the invalid,
rhe oowplexion is sallow or &ded, the eyes are
leficient in lustre and Intelligence, and there is a
fjorn, anxious expression in the whole countelanoe
which tell as plainly as written words could
Jcl that the great nouriakung organ., whose office it
s to minister to the wants of the body and to susain
and renew all its parts, is not performing its
luty. It requires renovating and regulating, and
0 accomplish this end Hostetter's Bitters may be
ruly sain to be the one thing neectfuL The broken
naiu-spring of a watch may be replaced by a new
>ne, but the stomach can only be repaired and
itrengthened, and this is one of the objects of the
hrnous vegetable restorative which for eighteen
rears has been waging a successful contest with
iyspepsia in all climates. As a specific for indigestion
it stands alone. When the resources of
he pharmacopoeia have been exhausted, without,
X best, doing more than mitigating the complaint,
1 course of this wholesome and palatable, yet
powerful, stomachic effects a perfect and permaient
cure. Iu all cases of dyspepsia the liver is
core or less disordered, and upon this important
[land, as well as upon the stomach and bowels,
he Bitters act with singular distinctness, regulain
g and re invigorating every secretive ana asimiiating
organ on which Dodily and mental
lealth depend.
