this State. ~ There is no sufficient reason for
such conclusion. Railroads, like banks, factories,
planters and merchants, were all
swamped in the terrible disaster of the late
war; and comparatively, tha roads, although
burned and torn up from one end to the other,
have weathered the storm, and are in better
financial standing than any other corporations.
Thestock in the Macon and Western, one
of the connections of the proposed Air-Line,
although demolished in part by Sherman, in
1865, is' now selling at $110.00 per share.
The C. G. and. A. Road in this State, last
year netted forty-four per cent, of its income
of over $400,000, which, under ordinal^
circumstances, would afford a large dividend
to its stockholders. That road was also demolished
by Sherman from Columbia to
Blackstock's, about fifty-three miles; its
bridges, depots, shops and rolling stock destroyed
; and since that time it has built the extension
of eighty-five miles, from Columbia to
Augusta, mostly upon its credit. If this read
can show such a balance-sheet, why should
not a new one, with all its advantages ana
none of its misfortunes to contend with, do
better ?
The question of. cost, in this article, has

of profit only 'have been touched upon.
Enough has been shown, however, t6 incline
us to give, our vote For Subscription ; and
it is hoped that others, like the writer, will
compare figures carefully, and be convinced
of its importance and utility. FARMER.
Lancaster Items.
The Lancaster Ledger of last week- contains
the following items:
The peach crop is not . likely to prove a
total failure, as was apprehended. Cotton is
coming up rapidly, though the ground is very
dry. Corn is lookiug well. Wheat very
promising.
The county commissioners of Lancaster
have raised the retail liquor license to two hundred
dollars per annum. Well done! The
greater restraint placed upon *an evil the
better. s
The citizens of Mecklenburg in public
meeting assembled, on the 30th ultimo, passed
resolutions recommending a subscription of
$100,000 by the county, to # whichever of the
two proposed railroad routes (the S. C. Central
and the Charlotte and Georgetown) the
people of Mecklenburg and Lancaster should
select. The vote upon the proposition will be
taken at an early day. On behalf Of the
Central, Lancaster "will see that" and go
one hundred thousand better. Kershaw won't
be behind.
6 Acquittal of McFarland.?The long
drawn out and sensational trial of McFarlaud
for the murder of Richardson, in New
York, was brought to a close on the 10th, the
jury, three hours after the case was given to
them, rendering a verdict of not guilty. This
was the result expected, for it has, during the
latter part of the proceedings, been evident
that so far as McFarland was concerned, the
case was virtually disposed of, and it was
more those who had aided, abetted and sympathised
with Richardson in gaining the affections
of Mrs. McFarland, and taking her
to himself, who were on trial than the prisoner.
In fact, freeloveism and all its supporters,
direct and indirect, or rather those perni*
cious doctrines, whose pernicious influence
tends to weaken the marriage tie, have been
on trial, and up for an airing and public condemnation.
The ground of acquittal is, of
course, the insanity of McFarland when he
did t he fatal shooting, a thing the jury ought,
however, to be very sure of, before aocepting
it as a feet .
The large Steam Distillery of Groot &
Co., near this city, was seized last week bv
some one or more of the Revenue Officers. We
do not know of our own knowledge, the cause
of the seizure, but it is said that it was in consequence
of some informality of proceeding,
and not for wilful violation of the law. We
are informed that this Distillery, within the
past year,'has paid forty or fifty thousand dollars
tax to the Government?Charlotte DemSpecial

Mr. P. P. Toale, whos6 advertisement appears
in another column, has established on a lirm basis,
in Charleston, the 1 argest and most complete manufactory
of doors, sashes, blinds, Ac., in the Southern
States. Having advertised liberally during
the past^ year, he has secured a large custom, extending
as far West as Alabama^ and he has thus

defies competition. Every person who contemplates
building or repairing should write at once
for Mr. Toale's price list.

Shaking and Burning.
It is not necessary to journey from the tropics
to Alaska in order to experience the extremes of
heat and cold. Thousands undergo all the inconveniences
of this thermometrical change every
day, or every other day, as the case may be, without
the trouble of moving over the threshold. A
word with these involuntary shakers. Wltat are
they doing to expedite* their return to a medium
temperature??to break the chills and banish the
fever ? Are they dosing themselves with quinine,
thereby imperiling the soundness of their bones
and impairing the vigor of thoir brains and nervous
system ? Some of them are, no doubt, but not
the majority of them, 1tis believed. The value of
Hostetter's Stomach Bitters-as a harmless and certain
specific for fever and ague is understood and
appreciated in all parts of the country where intermittents
prevail. The residents of such localities
bogin to take it early in the spring as a protection
against the miasma by which they are surrounded;
not all of them, perhaps, fora blind adherence
to error is the specialty of some people,
hut the greater number.
I-f there is any tixed 'fiust in therapeutics.it is

CHARLESTON, May 12.?The Cnops.-Iuformation
received from various -sections of the
South have been favorable in reference to the
progress of the crops during this period, the
plants exhibiting a healthy growth, and are coming
on satisfactorily, although somewhat backward.
In some districts rain is now needed to
give vegetation a rapid development. The present
advanced price of corn should induce unusual
attention to the securing a sufficiency of this valuable
gram, which promises to be worth full
figures.
The Receipts.?The arrivals at the Southern
ports for the week up to Friday last, were large,
and were 57,836 bales, in contrast with 50,56-1 bales
the week before, and 22,445 bales for the corresponding'period
last season. The receipts at New
Orleans were 28,703 bales against 5.268 bales last
year. The total arrivals at the Southern centres
from the 1st -of September last up to the latest
mail dates, were 2,630,041 bales, against 1,1)75,886
bales the previous year, showing an increase of
654,161 bales. The supplies lit the .main cotton

PT1HE passage of the Air-Line Rail Road through

It will take money to build this road. The
county will be taxed to raise it. The people will
pay the tax and pay it cheerfully. Right nere we
would remark that it also takes money to carry
on a Drug Store, and we hope that those in arrears

WATCHES.
rpHE" extensive these Watches for the
? last fifteen yea^MBurflway Conductors, Engineers,,
and ExpiMMn, the most exacting of
Watch-wearers, has thoroughly demcmstiatedtj^
strength, stead fa ass, durability and accurac^Jg
the Waitham Watch. To satisfy/that class in all
these respects, is to decide the question as to the
real value of these time-keepers.-.
More than 460,000 of these Watches are now
spewing for themselves in the pockets of the peopled
proof 4nid a guarantee of their superiority
over all others.
The superior organization and great extent of
the Company's Works fit Waitham, enable them
to produoe Watches at a pi ice whicbrenders competition
futile, and those who buy'any other
Watch, merely pay from 25 to 60 per cent, more
for their Watches than is necessary. >
We are now selling Waitham Watches at less
prices in greenbacks, than the gold prices before
the war. There is no other manufacture of any
kind in'the United States of which this can be
said.
These time-pieces combine every improvement
that a long experience has proved of real practical
use. Having hftd the refusal of nearly every invention
in Watchmaking originatiugln this country
or in Europe^ only those were finally adopted
which severe. testing by the most skillful artikans
in rmr works, and Ions use on the part of the pub
Jic, demonstrated to be essential to correct and enduring,
time-keeping. .
Among the many improvements, we would par- ,
ticularize: . * ,
The invention and use of a centre-pinion Of peculiar
construction, to preventdamage to the train
by the breakage of mftilt springs, is original with
the American Watch Company, whd^hdvfiig Wi
the refusal of all other oefltriyande#^ adopted
Fogg's Patent pinion as be&ig the.beat: and Anltr
less. ,y i
Hardened, and tempered hair springs, now Hniversally
admitted by Watchmakers to be the beat,
are used in ali grades of Waltham Watches.
All Waltham Watches have dust-proof cape,
protecting the movement from dust and lessening *'
the necessity of the frequent cleaning hefeeasary
in other Watches. >
Our new pa tent Btern-winder,or key leas Watch,
is already a decided suodess and a great improvement
on any stem-winding Watch in the American
market, and by far the cheapest Watch 6f its
quality now qffered to the public. To those Jiving
in portions of the United States where Watchmakers
do not abound. Watches yrith the jabovementioned
improvements which, tend to insure ac- .
curacy, cleanliness, durability and convenience,
must prove invaluable.
Every Watch guaranteed by the Company. '
To prevent imposition, buyers should see that
every Watch should bear either of the' 'ftriSowing

We think we are not arrogant in saying our

upon the sudden and heavy decline of both gold
ind cotton. Coimdenoe And the price - of cotton
liavlngbeen, to some extent, re-established,- many
gc^ds, stimulated too, by the increase of trade in
New York, have.advanced. Thus we now have
an unusually large fctdck, bought at the lowest
figures touched within the last eight years, and
they .will be sold accordingly. The attention of
the ladies Is particularly invited to our large and,,

we tender our graceful acknowledgments

THE SEWING MACHINE].
rpHIS invention may well be called the sister
L ait of Imprinting ptw^ fcrlt givea to oce
half of humanity a new Inlet of light to the mind;
the needy mother of a family has leisure for mental
culture beyond the material and the finite.
It was of no use to woman, whose days and
nights were devoted to the benumbing toil of earning
a scanty pittance by setting stitch upon stitch,
with her sewing needle, that the press scattered
books and papers lyoadcaat lover the land. She
had no time lor reading. Book learning was beyond
any woman's home circle of enjoyments,
when she had half a dozen or more in the family
to make and mend for, besides doing "the work
of the house." The SEWING MACHINE has
changed all this, in such measure that the great
mAjority of American women have now time to
read and to think, if they choose, and what woman
will not choose that which enables her to guide ;
and inform her children ?
The best Machines are sold by
