A GOOD TIME COMING IN THE SOUTH.
The New York Commercial Advertiser forcibly
remarks:
The condition of the Southern States, at the
present time is full of promise. They seem to have
fairly tided over their industrial and political troubles,
and the future is bright with the promise of
a high, and, we trust, enduring prosperity. Another
good cotton crop, of which the indications
appear to be the most favorable, will place them
in a position which even the Northern States may
envy. The Southern people, fortunately for themselves,
have had no credit for several years past,
and have therefore no debts at the present rime.
They have been forced to live economically, and
depend entirely upon their own resources, while
the Northeners, as a rule, have been extravagant
and wasteful. It is probable that in the event of
the occurrence of the financial panic which some
persons regard as imminent, the Southern people
would feel the shock much less keenly, and recover
from it much more rapidly than some of the
more wealthy and apparently more prosperous
Northern States.
The condition of the cotton market at the pres
ent time indicates that no material reduction is
likely to occur in the present prices of the peat
staple. The supply or cotton in both Englana and
the United States is scarcely adequate to the requirements
of consumers during the interval that
elapses before the new begins to come forward.
The cable quotations of 12-}d- for middling uplands
at Liverpool, is a fortune for the Southern planter.
That there will be no important reduction from
this price, is apparent from the evident inadequacy
of all the cotton fields in the world to supply the
demands for consumption. The supply is tailing
off from India, in spite of all the efforts of Englana
to stipulate production in that region. The South
for a series of years to come, will be the great source
of cotton supply for the world. King cotton is recovering
his lost throne, but he will reign henceforth
as a constitutional monarch over freemen,
not as a despot over slaves. Free labor will ulti:
mately vindicate its superiority, oven in the cotton
field.
The Confederate Dead at Point Lookout.
?During the last three years of the war three thou-1
sand Confederate prisoners, who died in the prison
and hospital of Point Lookout, were buriea in a
spot near the shore of the Chesapeake Bay, which
was enclosed by the Federal authorities with a
temporary wooden fence. The falling of the fence,
which has since decayed, the trampling of stock
upon the graves, and the flooding of a portion of
the low-lying land, have reduced the graveyard to
a deplorable condition, the names on the headboards
of some of the graves having become obliterated,
and even some of the bodies having been exposed.
The people of St. Mary's county, although greatly
impoverished by the war, raised $2,500 by a
lair in 1867 for the purpose of draining and enclosing
the land, but, unfortunately, the whole of this
sum was lost by the failure of the firm with which
it was deposited. Our own community are now

restoration of this neglected cemetery?a work of
common humanity, which the respect heretofore
evinced in the care and decoration of the graves of
those, whether of North or South, who fell during
the war, leaves no reason to believe will be regarded
with indifference.
Notwithstanding the dilapidated condition of the
" ' graves at Point Lookout, the friends of those buried
there will be glad to learn that Mr. L. 0.
Smith, to whom the land of the cemetery once belonged,
and whose farm adjoins it, and who has
reinterred at his own expense fifty of the bodies
which had been exposed, has in his possession a
correct list, furnished him by the surgeon of the
post before his departure, of the names of all the
Confederates interred in the cemetery, each name
having a number attached, which corresponds
with the numbers on the headboards, marking the
graves. By this means the bodies even now, in
the dilapidated condition of the place, can be readily
identified. A copy of the list is in this city, at
the office of Mr. J. Wesley Smith, secretary of the
London Park Confederate Memorial Association,
and can be seen upon application. Mr. Smith, of
St. Mary's, has kindly volunteered, upon the receipt
of instructions to that effect, to forward to
their proper destination the remains of any of the
Confederate soldiers interred in the cemetery,
charging simply the actual cost of removal.
Baltimore Sun.
Health of New York.?There were six hundred
and forty-three deaths in New York last week,
an increase of one hundred over the previous week.
A letter from the city says:
The health board admit that there were three
cases of cholera, but declined to say whether it was
cholera morbus or of the; Asiatic type. It is no
secret that a great many sudden deaths have occurred
within the few days past, from complaints
strongly resembling the latter, and to these the
largely increased mortality officially announced is
by many persons attributed. If the Board of
Health would return to the former practice of publishing
the diseases, as well as the total number of
deaths, the public mind, in cases of this 4cind,
would be less anxious than it is when left, as now,
to grope in the dark.

SEWING MACHINES.
THE whole country resounds with the fame of
these useful inventions and their famous inventors.
States and Empires may flourish and
fade away, dynasties reign and bo* forgotten, but
so long as the tide of time rolls on, their names
will be borne with it from generation to generation.
By their successful efforts to lighten the
burden of laboring humanity they have earned
immortality.
Their fame has a more enduring monument
than the page of history; it wi 11 live in the hearts

is a necessity of his existence.
