lRYRRESTIN<* TRIAL. , A few weeks ago we published an aocountof the killing of Mr. Iftebolae McComas, by Miss Martha S. Cairnes, ofBarford bounty, Md., whom he had seduced u odor, promise of marriage. : The circumstances of tire killing were these: McComas had gone to Jarrefctsv31e> to attend a militia drill, and was in the yard of the tavern, wlieo Miss Cairnes, who bad come expressly for dire errand, walked through the btrooom; sbdfhim three times, in the i presence of a considerable crowd, and retired un- , ^ molested. f 1 K Her trial, whiah has just taken plaes, was very I" interesting, theoourt room being densely filled with ( [ an audience, all of whose sympathies were with the < prisoner. The Baltimore' San gives the following ! sketch of the closing scenes, on the last day of the trial-:.-. ^ "At the boor of opening, after the judges were j on the bench, the accused entered the room 8s usual on the arm of the sheriff, closely veiled, and was , placed in the dock, trembling and seemingly more i affected than usual, ktiowing that before the sun of 1 this day set. her fete would be decided. Many of her friends had sent her precious words of sympa " ? ? J A tYtAiwnt^Aanf IvMinnot Lliy ttUU CUWUlO^uuiuuu x*. luoguiuvcuv tnn*Y|uw baa been presented to her early in the morning by a young member of the bar, which was prepared by the fair hands of Mrs. Stevenson Archer. When I she took her seat in the dock several female friends who had followed her in, placed themselves on j either side of her, remaining until all was over. Mr. Fernandis resumed his argument, if it oould ( be called such, dealing but little in dry law; bat it < was rather an impassioned and fervid strain of ek>- 1 qnenoe and imageiy, addressed not to the heads, hat to the hearts of those twelve men, who held i the life of her for whom he was pleading, in the j hollow of their hands. He was listened to with breathless attention, and while he was speaking, j there was a cessation of the rapping of the judge s < gavel and the call of the crier for silence. There i were hut few eyes that were not moistened, even 1 of those whose reason and jugment struggled j against it ' The- accused had also great difficulty in restrain? ing ber emotions. When Mr. Fernandis concluded, after speaking something over three hours, he turned ami took her bv the hand. She was mute, of oourse, but responded to his action with grate- ' ful significance of thanks. Mr. Archer followed, making the last speeoh on the skie of the defence. His argument was almost ( purely legal, but from the able manner in which he presented the law and the facts, and his happy facility of expression, the drift of bis remarks was not only easy of com prehension, but exceedingly in - J teresting, and the effect was not at all lessened by the mixture of pathos and fancy so adroitly intermingled. He also occupied three hours.. c J Attorney-General Jones then arose, and calmly and quietly, without any attempt at oratorical ef- < fort or flights of imagination, step by step reviewed ^ttl^AnAA {w\ni Limnnlrnr fA onfl fiiftillff tV)P ( tuc CV1UCUVC I1V1AI uviLiiiuiiiK w VUW) w materia] frets and holding them up to the jury so j that^Tie who ran might read." With his wellknown ability he then expounded the law, showing its application to the facts, but abstaining from reading any lecture to the. jury, or instructing them as to their duty, leaving it to their own convictions ' of duty'to draw their own inferences. He concluded a few minutes after five, and the j excitement now became intense. Necks were j stretched and eyes peered from all directions, first : at the prisoner and then at the jury. Many thought that the jury would render their verdict without * leaving the box: bat they gave no indication that , I they had arrived at a conclusion. " When the jury re-entered, after an absence of , ten minutes, the crowd in attendance was caution- 1 ed by-the court not to make any demonstration when the verdict was rendered, on pain of arrest, 1 and there is no doubt the caution was necessary to repress the enthusiasm of the brawnv yeomanry 1 clustered around. The clerk polled the jury, ana j after the-other formalities, the foreman gave the I verdict of "Not Guilty," when a few furtive yells 1 went op from some small boys in the rear of the ] crowd, who were not to be deterred by the threatening terrors of the court." The United States Court?Hon. George j S. Bryan, Presiding.?The case of Hampton ts. Trenhelm, Fraser & Co., the trial of which has for some days been pending in this Court, was . yesterday brought to a close. The defendants purchased daring the war a plantation and a large 1 number of negro slaves, valued at $300,000. For this they paid $150,000 in Confederate currency, and executed their bond, secured by a mortgage 1 of the property purchased for the remainder of the ' purchase money, payable after the war. Suit was brought upon the bond, and the defendants, among i other things, claimed: 1st. That, under the Ordinance of the Convention of 1865, they were entitled to show the true nature and value of the consideration. 2d. That the oontract for the purchase of the slaves was made after Liucoln's emancipation proclamation, and, therefore, the sale in this respect was without consideration. That in law the ^ plaintiff had at that time no valid title, and had, ? call nrv/J tkii nnfk. w Ult'reiUli;) UUbUUi^ W OCUj auu mv uwvuuuuv uvv?i ing to buy. 3d. That so far as the land was ooncerned, all that could be recovered was the value in Treasury notes, in proportion to the unpaid portion of its purchase in Confederate currency. These points were contested by the plaintiff, who contended that the contract was a valid one, and that being payable after the war, it was payable in lawful money of the United States. The case was elaborately argued by Messrs. W. K. Bachman and Theo. G. Barker for the plaintiffs, and Messrs. A. G. Magrath and C. G. Memminger for the defendants. Judge Bryan, as we understand, charged the jury in favor of the positions taken by the defendants. He held Lincoln's proclamation of emancipation to have been valid and conclusive, and as divesting from that date all title in slaves. The jury retired, and returned with a verdict for the plaintiff of $168,970.?Charleston Courier. Tea Swindlers.?Appletons Journal makes the following charge against certain New York tea bouses: Within a few years j large number of tea companies have sprung up in the city, whioh claim to import direct from China, to furnish a superior article at reduced rates, and which advertise large ly all over the country. One street is fairly lined for a considerable distance with them. We are assured by those claiming to know, that several of these tea establishments are organized frauds upon the people; that they use the leaves of the Cameha, which so closely resemble genuine tea that they are frequently mistaken for them by botanists; that they largely import and palm off upon purchasers Chinese "lie teathat they use the leaves of ash, plum, and other trees, and mingle them with good tea; and, furthermore, that they re-dry and color genuine tea leaves that have once been used, or have been damaged by water, &c. There is one of these companies which, we are told, does nothing else but purchase damaged cargoes or chests of tea, and then dries it on the roofs of certain buildings not a thousand guiles from where we are now sitting. The drying process having been completed, a small quantity of a superior article is added to the damaged, in order to give flavor; and it is then done up in packages for distribution all over the country. Those who are accustomed to patronize these tea establishments would certainly do well to analyze and test the quality of the article which is dispensed to them. gjmracal. PROSPECTUS ty M " " -of the "* * v : WORKING CHRISTIAN, 1 WEEKLY RELIGIOUS EEWBF4TBB, to be edited by REV. TILMAN R. GAINES, And published by Capt. L. M. Grist, at the Offloe or the Yor foriUe Enquirer, Yorkville, S. C. TTAVING secured a working capital of TWO JUL THOUSAND DOLLARS, and arranged with Capt. L. M. Grist, the successful proprietor of the Yorkville Enquirer, to publish for me, I expect to issue on the FIRST DAY OF JULY next, the first number of The Working Christian* a weekly Religious Newspaper, to bo elegantly printed with new type, on good paper, and to contain twenty-four wide columns. This enterprise has originated in the conviction that such a paper is, at this time, specially needed among our churches, to stir up the "pure minds of Christians" and "provoke them to love and good work*." It will contain valuable readlne on mat tors of practical importance, and will be specially devoted to the interests of the Christian Religion. Its title?WORKING CHRISTIAN-partUlly defines the character of onr paper, and suggests the department in wbioh we nope it will piincipally labor. The epithet WORKING, is not to be understood as oppoeing^r excluding the gospel faith which we are ever to hold and contend for; but as it was necessary for Paul to attend chiefly to the mysteries at faith, and James to the department of works, so we propose, for the most part to leave the contending for the faith to others, ana content ourselves by saying to all, "ftdth without works is dead." We desire to send out our herald weekly., to sound the alarm in the ears of the churches: "Awake! Awake 1 put on thy Btrength, O Zion and to earnestly beseech every Christian in the land to "work whne it is day." The term CHRISTIAN is intended to embrace nothing more nor less than the word strictly imports, viz: a follower ofChriat, such as were they, who were uflrat called Christiana at Antioch." It will contain the leading intelligence of the religions world as to If teste ns, and sympathize with every enterprise which has foe its aim the progress of the Saviour's kingdom. It will watch the movements of the churches?seek, out working churches and working men, and report their operations and successes. Its columns will contain, also, items of general intelligence. It will take no part in politics, further than to give the latest political news. Information on farming and gardening, on education and Oil the departments of useful industry, will be found in our paper.. Special attention will be paid to tne Cause of Sabbath Schools, Indeed, we hope to make our paper very interesting to the young. TERMS?INVARIABLY IN ADVANCE.
