THE COW PEA AS A FERTILHER. ' Hfc a letter written t? the ?i#\a#?rJa8f year, Mr..David Diokson gives some practical hints upon this subject. We reproduce them now that the readers of the Enquirse may make the nepessary arrante naents in time for the Summer sowing. His. Dickson says: like benefits of growing green crops, and burying them in the soil for the benefit of future crops are too Well understood to be questioned by any one, but it has opened a question in agricultural economy that has not been settled so satisfactorily. The English fanners, formerly used -"half a ton of ground bones per acre to grow a single crop, but thqy . have found by dissolving 200 pounds of bones in awd, at a cost of 50 per cent, on the price of bones (making t|e whole cost eaual to tbat of 800 pounds of bones), that it will produce the same effect at an outlay of only 80 cent, on that of the former mode, the latter method giving them the means of returning the same amount of manure to the fend next y^r as the former did, by producing the same amount of hay, turnips and other forage to feed stock. Now, admitting that it will pay to grow peas and clover, to be turned under as fertilizers, the following questions arise: At what time should tney be turned under to insure the greatest benefit ? Would it pay better to feed them off the land than to cover them with a plow, and what do tlyj lose by drying before they are turned under ? Here again the question of sotatte and insoluble manures is involve!. IKare always taken the side of solnble manures as being the most eoonbinicaL - Pry pea vines and elover will soon beoeme soluble. } I will give you my practice. It is one that will pay, although xwill not say that it is the best. First, keep your land in good heart; let the field;that you intend to sow peas on remain fallow; UtmTyou lay by your corn?say from the 1st to the 20jh of July, you will then have a large growth of green weeds to turn under. Start your teams with good torn plows, running off the land as nearly level as yOn can, and go round and round until the land or cutis finished. Start the pea dropper after every third plow, and the hand with the manure after the pea dropper. Drop the manure within four inches of the peas. If you find the peas will make from seven to fifteen bushels per acre, turn stock in upon them; placing salt in places over the field, to cause the most of the manure to be dropped on the field. Then invest all the profit arising from feeding stock on the field in bones ana Peruvian guano for the next crop, and you will find this system will pay. I have adopted it with both wheat and cotton, with good success. If the peas fail to fruit, turn them under whilst green. Second Plan.?Plant peas the first of April, same as above; turn under before the stems become very woody, and plant and manure a second crop at the same time you are turning under the first crop of vines, and treat the second crop as you did the first. The true policy is to secure the greatest amount of soluble vegetable mold you can 1 accumulate with the least cost. | Very truly, yours, 1 DAVID DICKSON, j N. B.?I prefer peas planted and cultivated on a level, both for the land and crop, i and for a sowing of small grain after the : pea crop. BIG PRpFIT?WHO CAN BEAT IT 1 From a gentleman residing in Lexing- i ton, we learn the following facts in relation 1 to the product of a small lot planted in cotton by our old friend J. D. Gresham, last year, in that village. The lot contained not qyite nine-tenths of an acre, and was Bordered on two, sides j with a row of large Pride of India trees, which completely shaded the land for seve- j ral feet, leaving for cultivation about three- ' fourths of an acre. This was planted about 1 the middle of April, in cotton?the seed i used being the Moina variety. The plant ! had three plowings, and was hoed twice. The entire yield was seventeen hundred and thirty-two pounds of seed cotton, which made a bale weighing 530 pounds of lint. wao Iton/llA/) mil 11 v\ in A. lie UVJJ noo vaiciuuj uouuicu^ j/uv u^/ iu a neat package, shipped to this market and sold for forty cents a pound. The profits were as follows: One bale, 530 lbs., sold at 40 cents per pound . $212 00 Forty-one bushels of seed, sold at $10 per bushel 410 00 Total profits from three-fourths of an acre 622 00 The expenses were: Kent of land $5 00 Breaking and bedding land for planting 1 00 Planting 75 Three plowings 1 50 Two hoeings .. 1 00 Picking, at 5 cents per pound 8 50 Ginning, packing and expenses to market 7 25 Total expenses $25 00 which, deducted from 622 00 leaves as net profit 597 00 Here we have a net profit from threefourths of an acre of land of nearly six hundred dollars, being at the rate of about eight hundred dollars per acre. What a future looms up for Southern people, if they will only be wise and industrious in the'use of the splendid advantages which nature has given them. We do not pretend to say that eight hundred dollars can be realized for every acre planted in cotton yet awhile, but we see no reason why, with judicious management and a proper system of fertilizing and rotation of crops, that mnnli TYtA?*a mnr nnf Kn mo/In aUiUUUb OlUU LLI UV/Li UiVl ^ UiCbJ UW VV rnnwv in a few years. Sentinel Haw to Make a Cold-Chisel.?Farmers and gardeners frequently need a good cold-chisel for light work, such as cutting off rivets, nails, or pieces of hoop-iron. A piece of bar steel, and the forging it into proper shape, will cost from fifty cents to one dollar. Those persons who want the use of a cold-chisel only once a week or so, do not always have the money to spare for a tool that they have but little use for.? Therefore, to get a cheap chisel, that will subserve all the purposes required, make use of a large, flat file that has been worn - out. Break off one end, so that a piece will be left about eight inches long; heat it in a charcoal-fire to near readness, and let it cool gradually* - Theq the steel will be soft. Now grind one end square and true for the head end, and form the catting edge by grinding at the other end. Thrust the cutting end in a charcoal fire, in the cookstove, until one inch in length is red hot. Now eool half an inch of the edge in cold water, which will render the edge quite too hard. Watch the color of the steel as the different shades appear near and at the Cutting edge, and as soon as you see a light straw-color on the surface, plunge the the chisel into cold water. By this, means, you will get a cold-chisel sufficiently hard on the. edge to cut iron, and so soft and tough in the part above the edge that it 'will bend rather than break.?Hearth and Home. ? I Hoo Cholbra.?About two months sinoe, I bought a lot of hogs infected with cholera, one being attacked soon after it was brought home. The hogs all fattened well except the one attacked, whiqkjlid not improve rapidly until within a few weeks. Knowing the importance of a cure for this distemper, whicn has destroyed thousands of dollars worth of hogs in our county alone within the last year, I hope our farmers will continue the experiment, as all other remedies tried hereto fare have failed. I would suggest that it be given in doses of from two to five grains, ana repeat every day where the disease actually exists, or twice a week as a preventive ; and that hogs taking the disease be deprived from drinking too freely of water for a few hours after.
