CHESTER CONTRIBUTORIAL,
BY WM. H. BRAWLEY!
""CHESTER, 8. C., JANUARY 14,1808.
PERSONAL.
Our absence from Chester, during the last two
weeks, was the occasion of our failure to send the
usual oontributorial. Hereafter, upon similar occurrences,
we hope to have the deficiency supplied
hy other hands. 1
DI8TBICT COURT.
The January Term of the District Court, will be
t held on the fourth Monday of the present month.
MI8GEGEN ATION.
We have been informed that a white man, lately
belonging to the 6th Regiment, U. S. Infantry,
was regularly married in this place, to a negro woman,
on last Sunday evening. The marriage service
was performed by a colored preacher.
RELIGIOUS.
The new Methodist minister, the Rev. Mr. Watson,
preached for the first time in town on last Sunday
night Wc are glad to learn that Mr. Leard
will still remain in Chester, as the Agent for this (
Circuit, for the distribution of books, &a

citement in our community during the lost week.'
One, involving the question as to who shall keep
the Rail Road Hotel this year, was tried on last
Saturday; but the Jury failing to agree, the case is
continued to Friday next .
THE TOURNAMEHT,
First announced for Tuesday, 31st December,
and then postponed because of inclement weatber,
to the 6th of January, was again postponed for
the same cause. It is now uncertain when it will
come off. The Committee, who have the matter
in charge, will, doubtless, arrange it for an early
day; but will announce in sufficient time to enable
the knights from the surrounding Districts (of
whom we are informed that there are quite a number)
to be present'at the tilt
The supper which was so bountifully provided
for the former occasion, and the dance, were enjoyed,
notwithstanding the weather, on last Tuesday
night A renewal of the danoe may be expected
when the tournament takes place.
THE REMOVAL OP THE OARRISOH,
Everything has been quiet, since the withdrawal
of the troops from this point In other parts of
the South some apprehensions have been felt that
upon such an event, there would be a collision and
trouble. We have never had any fears of this
kind, and the results, so far, do not warrant any.
The negroes are as quiet and peaceable as we
have ever known them. Most of them have settled
down in their respective homes, and but few
are to be found upon the streets. Lieut DeForTJVfuvtmon'o
Rni-Ann afill rftmninn bnrfi.
Those persons who employ freedmen would do well I
to have their contracts approved by him, to save e
any trouble in the future. t

THE OOHVEJTTIOH. 1
Unless the Supreme Court, which is now in ses- <5
sion at Washington, declares the Reconstruction q
Acts unconstitutional?as is not improbable?the ^
Convention of adventurers, negroes and no-bodies, t
which is to assemble in Charleston, on to-day, ?
will organize a government, which, in our opinion, J
will last for several years at least; and it is a mat- c
ter of some interest to know what they are going ^
to do or attempt t
From all that we can learn, the recent changes s
in political sentiment at the North will modify, very
materially, the proposed plans of the Radical party
here; and we would not be surprised if the Constitution
they frame, (or rather which has been
framed for them) should abound in specious con- v
servatism. Universal suffrage may be expected
as a matter of course, and that, of itself, would be I
enough to damn it; but beyond this, wc donbt if |
they will attempt any violent changes, which would j.
not be acceptable to a majority of the white people I
of the State. It is probable that all debts con- |
tTacted for negroes will be declared null and void, j
and all other ante-war debts scaled down. These E
measures will be very popular with a very large ^
class, who would prefer risking their political ^
rights, to sacrificing their property to pay debte T
which they are fast coming to regard as unright- |
a eous. s
We have heard that it is the intention of the s
londpi-o to Ipavp nndistnrhed. the nresent iudiciarv i
system, and to continue in office all of the old s
Chancellors and Judges, requiring.no test oath
from them, and to disfranchise none save hose al- 8
ready debarred by act of Congress. By making
such a show of conservatism,; they will hope to .
have their Constitution ratified by the people and
accepted by Congress, and will then fasten upon
us a government, which willl^e like the Old Man i
of the Sea on the back of Sinbadthe Sailor.
From all that we can learn, everything is not j
harmonious among this "band of brothersasdis- a
sensions and divisions raise their hideous forms already.
The Northern men, the "saints" who
have come out to possess the earth, wish the lion's m
share of the offices and spoils, while the Southern
renegades think it all very fine that none but
"loyal" men should feed upon the carcase of our |
old State. They feel that they are the true' 'saints,''
the men who have passed through fire and perse- ^
cution (in Confederate "bomb-proof offices," for
example,) and that by virtue of their capacity for
"iron-clads," they are entitled to and fitted for
the government of the land, with all the stealings j
thereunto accruing.
i Besides these elements, there will bo the negro ^
faction, pure and simple?the "forty acre and a
mule" men?the most honest parcel in th? whole A
lot, probably. Altogether, the "constitutional con- ?
vention," so-called?will be an interesting spectacle
to God and man, and the actings and doings in
the "City by the Sea" for the next month, will
cause many a ripple which will stir up the dead i
serenity of our existences.

Grammar. ^
To a correspondent's inquiry upon the point, we ^
reply: Yes, it is ungrainmatical to say "I shall try t,
a?u? come to see you." One reason is that, if ^
.come is construed in that way, there is no sense in ^
using try at all?that is to say, I shall try and 1 j
shall come, become two separate propositions of
which the latter covers the former, and more. It
is somewhat analogous to saying "I shall buy some corn
and a barrel of corn," when a barrel of corn is
ft the quantity bought The correct form, of the 1
sentenoe in question is, "I shall try to come to see r

The University Lectures. ?
On Thursday night of last week?the 9th in- tl
stant?the fourth lecture of the season was deliver- J J
cd by the Rev. Dr. Reynolds, who fills the chair p
of Ethics in the University, His subject was Log- tc
iic, or the Propaedeutics of Science?the prelimina- ^
ry training necessary for the successful pursuit of ^
science and philosophy. To say that the lecture e:
was entertaining, able and learned, would be but
to say what is a matter of course in anything offer- q
cd to the public by Dr. Reynolds. ai
The preceding lectures have been as follows:
Mr. Timrod as a Poet, by Professor Rivers; the
Ixind of Circulation in Nature, by Professor Jos. ~
LfiContc; and the Romantic Poetry of th?Middle .
Ages, by Professor Sachtleben. These lectures |
have been well attended and the success of the idea _
may be given as a certainty.

1868. . A CARD. 1868.
mHE Proprietor of the YORK DRUG STORE
1 tenders his numerous patrons a Happy New
Year, and wishes that all of them may attain more
health, happiness and prosperity, in this year of
1868, than any preceding year. His intercourse
with his many friends and customers has been of
the most pleasant character, and he hopes that
their extensive patronage will continue to our
mutual advantage. I beg a continuance of the
same, and solicit their influence in soliciting business
from those who have not heretofore patronized
me, promising my best efforts to please them
and guaranteeing the best and purest articlesat
moderate prices.
TO COUNTRY MERCHANTS
I would say that they are not treating the Drog?ista
of this town in a proper manner, fay wudriwg
heir purchases elsewhere. I have, repeatedly,
offered to duplicate any bill they may make in a
Northern or Southern market, of Drugs, Medicines,
Paints, Oils, Dye Stuffs, Soaps, Perfumery,
(fee., <fec. I am your townsman; here is the plaoe
for you to buy articles in my line, and if you do
not buy them here, you are not assisting in building
up the prosperity of yonr native Town and
District If yon buy here yon are doing this, and
besides, acting patriotically in assisting your Dellow
citizen to live ; because the money spent here
goes to assist in supporting a large family, which
money must be spent amongst oar own people for
supplies of subsistence, amongst your mintsters
for the support of the Gospel, and amongst your
teachers for the educationtsf his children. Some
may say no; yon will send yonr money back to
the North.for more Stock. I answer that the assertion
is ofally partly correct, as a great deal of it
remains here for the purposes Just stated, whilst
the portion that goes North is for Stock that is only
necessary to manufacture the
THOUSANDS OF ARTICLES
I make up for your uaejjPblch are as cheap as you
can buy anywhere, and, in many instances, much
better. Give me a fair trial, and if you are .pot
satisfied you will soon know it, and purchase afterwards
elsewhere. Just bring along your Bills
and see if I don't duplicate them centfor cent.
These ore perilous times, and the Southern peoEle
should aid and assist each other more in their
usiness pursuits than ever before. Having a
large and iresh Stock, purchased at LOW BATES,
I would be pleased now, in the commencement of
this New Year, to furnish all Country Merchants
with such articles, in my line, as they may want,
duplicating all other bills, besides giving them
any advantage that may occur, in the decline of
prices. Respectfully,
