He asked for enfranchisement of the negro,
without whose aid, he says, the loyal white

Hon. Wra. D. Kelly said he wished to
.introduce the great and valiant Governor
Brownlow, who, in the oonrse of his brief
remarks, said the present Congress was the
most patriotic body in tbeworld, and never
had been excelled by any but the present
Legislature of Tennesse. He further said:
If another war oomes I want you to divide
your army into three parties, let the first

with live torches and do the burning?let
the third oome with surveyor's lines and

Result of the "Air-Line Railroad"
meeting in New York.
Mr. E. M. Johnson, one of the directors
of the Air-Line Railroad, has just returned
from the meeting of officers of the above
road, held in New York.
From him we have been able to gather
the following facts The first business be
fore the body was to elect officers. This
was despatched without delay. Then a
moo or\nninf?H Innronorn Ko-laara
WKIUIIVWO vrw -V v mrj-mwmww+*j
which being done, the; were brought before
the meeting for adoption, first singly, then
as a wboie. One of tbe resolutions adopted,
was to this effect: "That this road shall
ran from Atlanta to Gainesville.'' When
it reaches Gainesville, two surveys are to be
made from that point. One route to run J
to Chester via Anderson C. H. Tbe other
to Charlotte or Salisbury, N. C , via Old
Pendleton. The Engineer elected, Mr.
Sage, was to prooeed immediately to the
surveying of these lines, and be prepared
to report at their next meeting, wbiob was
to be held in Atlanta upon the 4th Monday
in September.
Mr. Johnson speaks very sanguinely and
thinks tbe building of this road is a foregone
certainty. Great inducements were
of course held out to bring the road through
here. Our immense mineral wealth and
mining operations are sufficient guarantees
that this road will pay, besides it was a
very slight deviation from ao Air-Line,
and was the only practicable route to bring
it.
There are many persons who are entirely
ignorant of this proposed road. It is believed
by many that it is oQiy intended to
ran from Altanta to Anderson Court House.
This old line, about which there was some
excitement a few years ago, is to be a grand
link in one of the greatest roads in the Uni
ted States. The Air-Line Road proper is
to run from New Orleans to New York in
as near a direct line as will be praotioable.
They propose to traverse this distance in
fifty boon. They know they can do it, ana
they feel confident that it mast be the most
desirable line for transportation, for the
very sensible reason that it will be the most
economical and expeditious These facts
induce capitalists to invest?they eare not
one fig for the road from Atlanta to Anderson
only as a connecting link in this proposed
line.
Congress has incorporated a company to
be termed the "Air-Line Company" to
boild this road, and appropriated one million
dollars towards the building of it -
True this amount is not to be reckoned as
dollars and cents, and is but a drop in the
backet, bat the name means something, and
the mere faot that some aotion was taken
apon it by that body proves that the road is
not considered impracticable, bat is destin
ed to be a national benefit.
We have sketched the proposed line so
that onr people may readily see the incalculable
advantages to the whole oonntry,
which are to be derived from the running
of this line. They well rejoice at the pros
peet of the road, in every Bense, on this
continent.?Air-Lint Eagle, Gainesville,
Ga.
Prices Coming Down.
Gen Wright, one of the editors of the
Augusta Chronicle and Sentinel, is in New
York. Id his last letter, he gives us the
following in relation to the prices of sundry
articles in that oity:
Prices of goods of every description are
much lower than they were last fall. This
is particularly true in reference to leading articles
of groceries. For instance, orushed
sugars, which we sold last fall at 23 to 24
cents per pound, are now offered freely at
16 to 20 per oent cheaper, and so of all
the heavier and more oommon artioles in
the grocery line. In this branoh of business
a large trade is done, at prices 10 to
15 per oent. cheaper than the last season.
Dry goods are also lower, and the stocks
heavier than ever before known in this oity.
In foreign goods, the decline is greater
than those of domestio manufaotute. I
learn that there is considerable stagnation
among the manufactures, and serious ap
prehensions are felt lest the continued downward
tendency of prices should oause the
*tonna?e of manv of the mills, or at least
r r o 0 #
foroe them to m&nufaoture very epariogly.
The jobbers are doing a fine business now,
and seem pleased with the prospects ahead.
There is still a strong belief here that the
orop of cotton will be at least half that of
1860, and many think it will even go beyond
that amount
Ex-Governor Morehrad.?The telegraph
has announoed the decease of this
distinguished man of our sister State The
Wilmington Journal, in ohronicling bis
death, says:
"He was one of the most remarkable
men of the State, and, as connected with
the great works of internal improvement
now oompleted, has probably left a greater
impression upon the history of North Carolina
than any of her sons who have preceded
him.
"He was born on the 4th of July, 1798,
in Rockingham County, and graduated, in
1817, at the University of the State. He
represented his native County, in 1821, in

ford in 1836 In 1841, he was eleoted by
the Whig party as Governor, defeating the
Hon. R M. Saunders. He was re-elected
in 1843. Governor Morehead's last political
service was as a member of the Peace
Conference which assembled in Washington
in 1861, and vainly attempted to oheck the
impending straggle.
The New Constitution of North
Carolina.?The Raleigh Progress, of
Tuesday, says the vote from the counties
heard from stands 16,225 for ratification,
18,565 for rejection. Eighteen oounties
are yet behind, though there is hardly a
possibility of their affeoting the result ex I
cept to lessen the majority by whioh the
new Constitution has been defeated. The
majority against it thus far is two thousand
three hundred and forty.

Corn.?1The receipts of the week has been large, say
about 45j000 bushels, mostly Mixed Western from New

and very difficult to effect sales except at a very low figure.
In the early part of the week some holders sold Prime
Maryland White, by weight, bngs included, at about $1.34
per bushel, and short credit being given. But yesterday
buyers were only offering $1.25 to $1.26 per bushel for
White Maryland, weight, bags included,?while sellers appeared
to be willing to accept SI .30. We quote the market
