- - i . r= Alexander H. Stephens. A Washington correspondent of the Philadelphia Ledger gives an account of as interview with A. H. Stephens : He Was received very cordially by the President, whom he thanked in his usual pleasant bat dignified way, and a conversation then ensued npon the-condition of the oountrv, the President's plan of restoration and reminiscences of the past. Both gen tlemen were perfectly easy and unrestrained in tbeir language and.manner, and the . interview was as pleasant as if between two ' old bat long estranged friends. . In a conversation with yonr correspondent, Mr. Stephens ssid that it was owing to a want of unity through the South that tbeir cause was lost. When a system of the most crushing despotism was inaugurated at Richmond, from that moment the struggle was abandoned, and the Confederacy was left to its fate. * S'ldr. Stephens wae very careful not to mention the name of the rdbel President in speaking as above, but it was not difficult to see that there must have been a long estMnnamant knhwnnn fknm qnrr3 tkftf fha nnfa yuvnvuu luutu^ ?uu ?uwv vmv^mvw * of Davis within the last year or more of his Administration, were in no sense or manner ooontenanced or supported by the seoond officer of the so-called "Government. - Towards Davis personally, however, I do aot believe that Mr. Stephens entertains a single unkind feeling. *<His trial," said he "wonld do no good." In so far as the aharge of treason was eonoerned, he was i equally guilty with Davis, and so, he add fed, ' were thousands besides. The statement that has gone forth from Fort Warren, to the effeot that Mr. Stephens bad "complained" of his oontinned incarceration, while those more bitter than be were liberated, Mr. S. informed me was not oorreot. In a jocular way, he said to one of bis visitors : "1 oannot see why I am confined, while others who took a more aotive part in the rebellion are daily liberated hot so far as complaining, he said it never escaped bis lips. While in close confinement within the damp walls of the fort, Mr. Stephens fell away considerably; but from the moment he was allowed free exeroise oat of doors, be commenced to gain his flesh, and is now almost as well as any time within the last six years. I need Dot tell you that he acoepts the situation, for he does so without a murmur. Indeed, those who have judged him harshly throughout the war hare judged him wrongfully, for," cfuring the whole of its ' continuance. hie heart ever beat warmly towards the old Union He bad, of coarse, : his life-loDg oonfirmed notions about the "Bighte of the Statesj" but this was more for their own protection than with any view - to the disruption of the glorious phalanx as it then existed. When overborne by the-torrent, however, like many others equally true to the flag, he went with his State, though under a protest whioh none who have read can ever forget, nor, after reading, doubt the patriotism that inspired it Mr Stephens takes a great interest in tbe result of the elections in Georgia, and hopes that good and true men will be every where chosen. He expeots to reach bis home at Crawfordsville about the 28th, and will proceed thence via Atlanta. War Debt. The determination of the President to hold as disloyal the people of any State that shall recognize the debt contracted for the proseoution. of tbe war, has inspired muoh feeling. The evidenoe of those debts are not held by the parties most active in the proeeoution.of the war, but have passed * to the hands of those having funds for investment, and of those, the largest class, perhaps, ire the widows and orphans of the "I- - r_ IL. ?tti i j : ?:? OHH3. 1U WHO QCM1UJCUI Ul CSM?lC3y auui.uio* trators and guardians were allowed to make such investments; they naturally sought them from the feeling they were safe Of these, also, another large class are the mercantile men and others who owe debts abroad, and who were forced, from the ez istenee of the war, to bold their foods in snob form as to meet them when the war 'should be over. Both classes are entirely meritorious. Distributees of estates, generally unfitted to provide for themselves, have nothing else to depend on, and debtors, with this last stay stricken from thorn, must fall before their foriegn creditors, nor t then will be able to discharge their obligations, but must grovel under them for the balance of their lives. It is to be regretted, also, we think, for the reason that the paramount waut of oar people?now depends upon the start of business, and this capital is neoessary to a start. And so important is it, that it were almoBt enough to justify the State iu a vol notary appropriation of so ipuch to the uses of her oitizens We could better pay that ?vr*\ nfr asvnrtA ftiftma f I rw r\ ikon kn miik/Mi f if OUUJ at ovuio lutuAo uuio iuau uc ntiuuui tw now. We are pleased to believe that io this State the evi! will be less felt than in man; others. We have the recollection of bat two amounts of any oonseqaenoe issued dor. ing the war?the one was of $400,000 in 1861, and another of about $1,200,000 in 1862 and 1863. These sums are large, hot less than were those issued by other States, and it may he possible for the State to compensate the loss by issaiDg bonds for the payment of the current expenses of the State Government without taxation. But | this will alleviate our wants, bat will not avert the evil. The capital will be lost, and individaals will necessarily suffer; the State will find her credit impaired, and under every aspect, we tfbuld deprecate presistence in the policy. Charleston News. .Bone Felon.?As we often see friends suffering from these very troublesome things, we publish the following cure for them, which we have heard highly recommended. As soon as the parts begin to swell, get the tinoture of lobelia and wrap the part affected 'With olotb thoroughly saturated with th( tinoture, and the felon is dead. An old phystoian says be has known it to cure it scores of oases, and it never fails, if applied in season. Another remedy is vouched for by the Buffalo Advocate, as a certain cure frotr its own knowledge. It is as follows: Take a pint of common soft soap and stir in aii slacked lime till it is of the oonBistenoy o: v glasier's. putty. Make a leather thimble, fill it with this composition, and insert the finger therein, and a care is certain. This is a domestic application that every housekeeper can apply promptly. . Trying Confederates for Treason. ?The Louisville Journal says as to the trying of Lee and bis confederates for trea son, convicting and ezeouting them, the case is very simple V>d very plain. The Government can't do it. It has boon estopped from it by its own solemn aots? It pledged its honor, its faith, everything it has to pledge, that it would do nothing of this kind ; that it would not "disturb" the surrendering parties so long as they should keep their paroles and observe the laws where they might reside. That was the bargain. It was clearly expressed, clearly understood. No cloud of words ean.olog it, no logical subtleties evade it, and no political legerdemain oan ever deceive any I honest mind as to the- nature of the contract or the daties~inoumbent upon the contractors. Oar Government, we feel sare, will religiously observe its faith, its loyalty, and preserve its untarnished honor, its good name and fair fame in the premises. All the rivers of earth oonld. not wash ont the stains it wonld befoul itself with b|y a contrary course. How any decent saoe man oan wish the Government thus to i make itself everlastingly exeorable, volun- ' tarily to place the brand of infamy upon its i own forehead, is to us utterly incomprehensible. It is a moral or rather immoral phenomenon whioh we can explain only by referring it to the irrational. Novel Place of Amusement.?Here is an anecdote extracted from the London iTelegraph't acoount of the building of the new bridge at Blaokfriars, and worth quoting: At the building of Westminister Bridge, diving bells were used, but a difficulty arose of a very unexpected kind. The men in the bells, comfortably out of sight of their employers, found themselves under no compulsion to work. One would not think at first the bottom of the great London sewer was a pleasant plaoe, for the liquid whioh flows in the Thames, and is by courtesy oalled water, is so thiok that in s bell a few feet below the surfaoe, it is as dark as night, though men have been down in sixty feet of sea-water and worked by daylight. But the divers at Westminister did not mind the gloom. < Lighting op their caodles, they used, instead of working, to play cards and read newspapers Tbey took down beer, aod even tried smoking during the sub aqueous debauohes, bat the effeot upon the breathing i was not agreeable, and they took to chew- < ing instead. By giving a random signal every now and then to the men direoting the movements of the bell from above, they could convey the impression that they, were working, and their little amusements were uninterrupted for some time, till at last they were found out Diving dresses and helmets were then introduced, and the use of .bells was given up with very beneficial results. * ?? >? Mysterious Woman in New York. i ?The New York World, in an artiole on the Central Park, has the following : Among the talk of the patrons of the turf in the traok is one upon the celebrated "Lady of the Dawn." She is described as being very beautiful, but of strange palidness and sileDoe. She eDters the park at the earliest hour of the morning, and rides rapidly up the most secluded bridle paths, never accompanied by anyone, and refusing to speak or bait with anybody. She has always worn a coal blaok hat, plume and skirt and dark gloves, but she is without a riding whip. After a half hour's ride she emerg USj auu.io ucvu ddcu iu cuvti tuc pain gavco at any other time of the day. Her counteDaBce is very melancholy; nobodyseem^to .know her; she is so much of a mystery that the polioemen only call her the "Lady of the Dawn." . . 1 ???? 1 How to Marry a Belle.?In Canada a riob old widower is said to have practised an ingenious soheme to gain the hand of the belle of the village. He hired an old gipsy to tell the young lady's fortune, and instruct, ed her to state that a wealthy old widower (giving a description of his personal appear* anoe and dress) would pay her a visit and offer himself, amd that she would accept, and be left a wealthy young widow before the close of the year. Hor next husband would be a young man she liked at present. The gipsy did her duty, the old man presented himself, and the marriage followed. He is likely to live many years, and the village belle may be a grandmother before she beoomes a widow. Champ Ferguson.?Champ Ferguson, who was recently exeouted at Nashville by a military commission, in his last statement said: "I was a Southern man at the start; I : am yet, and will die a rebel. I believe I was right in all I did. I don't think I done ! anything wroDg at any time.. I committed j my deeds in a cool and deliberate manner. 11 killed a good many men, of ooorse; I i don't deny that, bot never killed a man ; whom 1 did not^know was seeking my life. It is false that I never took any prisoners. ! I have taken a great many, and after keeping tbem awhile paroled them. I tried to 1 | prove this during my trial, but they would 1 not give me time to do it." The Fenians.?At the Fenian oonven tion in Philadelphia Tuesday, Patrick J. Wheeler, a prominent Irish-Amerioan journalist, made his appearance, having-just ! returned from a tour in Ireland, during which he was oonpeoted with Irish Fenians and informed himself of their plane. He 1 reports their organisation as powerful aod under skillful leaders. The number pres< eut has been increased by delegations from the West, aod a delegation from California ! is expeoted. Financial matters are being ' perfected, and subscriptions to the loan | will soon begin. ? I?* The President has ordered George I W. Gale, a lawyer of Alabama, to be transferred to a civil instead of a military conrt ) for trial. He is oharged with being the > author of an advertisement soliciting coni tributions to the amount of one million of r j dollars with which to procure the assassinsf1 tion of President Lincoln. ? Getting- "Alarmed.?The Washington oorrespoodeot of the New York Herald ? says: "A citizen of Brooklyn, New York, e writes to the Freedmeo's Bureau that par- j ties in that oity are engaged in inducing { negroes to come from tbe Southern States to Q the East promising them work and good ? pay, and charging a fee of five dollars a c head for all whom they transport. vBy this " sort of agency, a large number of indignent tn and worthless blaoks are being introduced e into New York, and very few are meeting I with any considerable suoo'ess in getting em* g ployment." . J . t] Cure for a Burn.?Tbe best thing for u a burn is tbe following, and every family * ought to know it. As soon as possible, af- p ter the burn, throw a little'green tea in hot {,' water; let it Bteep. Stir an Indian meal d poultice. Spread tbe tea leaves on the poul- 1 tice, put it on tbe burn or scald, whatever it ? may be. If burnt' with powder, it will take ? it out and the skin will be as clear as ever.
