Miramon: that he felt uneasy in his position, and
considered any further attempt at a peaceful solution
of the Mexican question useless: that in
this sense be had plainly written home to his
government, as also he had notified the government
of Juarez that if they do not come at once
to an understanding with the United States, a
resort must he had to arms: nnd finally, to sum
up all, that as no proper response was expected,
war between the two countries was inevitable.
Stated thus broadly and literally, by a gentleman
who writes at his ease, this intelligence is
somewhat startling. It is, however, in its general
drift and meaning, in accordance with intelligence
which we receive through other and more
direct sources. Not only has our Minister, in his
zeal in our national interests, failed to bring the
Government of Miramon to a sense of duty, bat.
what seems, at first sight, more unaccountable to
those who do not know Mexican character, he has
failed to come to any credible and honorable arrangement
with the party which pretends, above
all others, to be the party of liberality and progress.
We state these facts as they come to us very
directly, but not without misgivings as to their
entire accuracy, inasmuch as we are left in doubt
as to whether the writer reports directly a conversation
had by himself with Mr. McLane, or only
a popular version of what may have accidently
fallen from his lips. In the meantime, however,
we await, not without impatience, the arrival of

The Self Propelling Steam Fire Engine.?The
Philadelphia papers think perfection has been
reached in the last Steam Fire Engine bnilt there,
and which propels itself on any sort of street.?
The North American says:
The engine went from the bouse, at Lombard
and Third streets, up Lombard to Fifth, up Fifth
to Cbesnut, up Chesnut to Broad, down Broad to
South, down South to the Dock, and along Deleware
avenue to Lombard street and back to the
house. The engine descended the hill at the foot
of South street with as much ease as an ordinary
wagon under perfect control, and afterwards asceuded
the bill at Lombard street, which is the
steepest in the city, with the same facility. The
ascent of Lombard street hill was done without
even approximation to a baulk. No pair of horses
in Philadelphia could have done the same feat. J
It was feared that this matter would be a failure,
and when it was successfully accomplished, and j
the utility of the machine established beyond a
peradventure, the crowd who witnessed it rewarded
the performance by nine hearty rounds of applause.
The members of the company own'ng
the apparatus were almost beside themselves with
exultation. When the apparatus reached Chesnut
street, the multitude of people swelled to
thousands, and more excitement was created than
ever. Part of the route down Broad street was
done at the rate of ten miles an hour?a matter
absolutely necessary to escape the crowd.
For so uncouth a looking apparatus, this ma
chine is a miracle. It is handled as easily as a
child's wagon. It can be stopped like a stopwatch.
It is steered by a tiller, and while its entire
working is simple, its whole management is
nnder perfect control. It is frecfrom sparks or
smoke. Indeed, the only difficulty is to suggest
a fault in it. The company intend to take it ont
again this week and give it a test, when all who
desire to do so can witness it. For service In conflagrations
along Delaware avenue. Front and Water
streets, where it can suck Water from the
river, it will be invaluable.
King'* Mountain Military School.
The annual announcement of those successful
teachers of youth, Capts. Jenkins and Coward,
appear in the Mercury this morning. The military
education of youth has ever been fuliy advocated
in these columns, and it is gratifying to read such
reports of examination as may be found in the
last number of the Yorkville Enquirer.?Charleston
Mercury.
The King's Mountain Military School.?This excellent
institution, situated at Yorkville, is, we
are gratified to learn, in a most prosperous condition.
This is doubtless gratifying intelligence
throughout the State, as the School is regarded
from the seaboard to the mountains, as a very
capital institution.?Orangeburg Southron.
The Yorkville Military School.?The card of
Messrs. Jenkins & Coward will be found in another
column. We have also received from them a
copy of their circular, containing rules, regulations,
catalogue, &c. We are pleased to see from
this that the uumber of cadets in their school is
one hundred and three, and that these enterprising
gentlemeu have, through their energy uttd indefatigable
exertions, held it up to a very high
standard of prosperity. They are assisted by a
very able corps cf professors and officers.?South

Yorkville Female College.?It will be seen from
the notice in this issue, that the 12th Session of
the above Institution will open on the 17th of
August.
It is a Presbyterian seminary, and it has been
in operation sufficiently long, to afford practical
evidence of the facilities it affords for obtaining,
at a reasonable expense, a substantial and accomplished
education. Not the least of its advantages
is its location.
The village of Yorkville has always been noted
not only for its beauty and salubrity, but also for
the intelligence and morality of its citii ms, thus
making it at once a pleasand and safe place of
residence. The College under the control, of its
Principal, whose experience and acquirements
well qualify him for the position, h3S tally met
the expectation of its friends. And we trust it
will long continue to enjoy as we know it merits,
the favor and patronnge of the community.?

Roaches.?A correspondent of the Knoxville
Whig furnishes the following remedy for Roaches.
Perhaps some of our readers may be interested
in it:
"These vermin are easily destroyed, simply by
cutting tip green cucumbersat night, placingthem
about where the roaches commit depredations.?
What is cut off from the cucumbers in preparing
them for the table, answer the purpose as well,
and three applications will destroy all the roaches
in the house.
"Remove the peelings every morning, and renew
them at night. If properly applied, and the
remedy fails, the writer of this article will pay
any one's subscription for this paper for one year."
Serine/ Machines.?The following paragraph from
a number of the London Monthly Magazine published
in 1817, contuins an allusion apparently to
the first sewing machine invented :
"A Tyrolian has lately invented at Vienna a
machine for needle-work, by which it is said every
kiod of sewing may be executed with the utmost
precision. The Emperor of Austria has
granted a patent to the inventor. Should these
mechanical perfections make much further advancement.
everything in the world will shortly
be executed by machines."
Ilo,?.?Italy is about uj large in territory as
throe such Sf't'es as Ohio. It contains 25,000,000
of people. The largest State i? Naples. It occupies
more than one-third of the peninsula.?
The Pope rules over about three millions of people.
The Stn'e of Tuscany has about two millions.
and Parma and Modena one million of inhabitants.
Sardinia has a population of five raillions.
and is nearly the size of South Carolina.?
The States of Lombardy and Venice belong to

us the following curious fact:
"During divine service at Bethany Church,
York, S. C., in the midst of my. discourse (we
were in the arbor) a storm came up and a bolt of
electricity struck a large oak tree near by to
which a mule was hitched. The congregation

Nature is tne obeat Pjiysician.?This is now
admitted by the medical profession, as a fundamental
principle of healing science. It is wisely
provided by the human economy, that whenever
anything is wrong in the physical system, the
natural forces of the body are brought to bear to
expel the disease. The great aim. therefore is
to strengthen the natural powers. This has been
kept in view by the skillful compounders of DR.
J. HOSTETTER'S BITTERS, which operate to
give fresh vitality to all the organs of the body
The effect of this medicine upon the stomach, the
liver and the kidneys, are prompt and decisive.
The patient who is wise enough to quit a drugging,
and try the Bittebs, soon feel9 as if he bad
taken a new lease of life, and as he continues the
use of the article, he is overjoyed to find the
streams of health coursing through his frame.?
Let all from whose cheek the bloom has departed,
