Charlotte Market.
Charlottb, X. C., May r" 23.
Cotton.?During the past week very little ol
this article has been offered for Sale.
On Wednesday last a small lot brought from 8$
(?\9 cents. We continue to quote 8J09J cents,
as the top of the market.
Flour.?This article has found ready sales during
the past week, and commanded the highest
ruling figures: but prices have fallen off somewhat
in consequence of the receipt of unfavorable
advices from abroad. Prime flour in barrels
readily sell at $0.75: in bags of 90 lbs. we quote
S3.50*.
Wheal.?Our quotations for Wheat range from
90(3193 cents bushel.
Corn.?The market is well supplied with oorn,
and the demand good at 90@9& cents bushel.
Bacon.?This article has been arriving freely
and disposed of readily at from II J@12.
Lard.?Lard is worth 13 cents for prime quality.
We quote 12J@13.?Bulletin.
The Bridge of Bujfalora.?lt has already been
stated that this magnificent bridge over the Ticino,
had, according to the latest reports, been destroyed
by the Sardinian troops on the approach of the
Austrians, A letter writer says:
This bridge is one thousand feet long, and is
the finest bridge I ever saw away from city or
v. oUl.n arches af miiform site, and
tUWU. 11 UUO Civ 1WU HI vuw ,
is built of immense blocks of hewn granite, at a
cost of nearly S700.000. Such a bridge conld
not be built for a million of dollars in the United
States. The parapets are of hewn granite in immense
blocks, four feet high, two feet wide, and
six feet long; sidewalks on each side of solid blocks
of granite, and double train ways of the same material
for carriages. Indeed, the bridge is perfect,
and withal so sternly simple that not a dollar
appears to have been expended for mere ornament.
Unless blown up by gunpowder, or thrown
up by an earthquake, it would last antil the end
of time.
"0, fortcne! fontrne! all men call ther
Fickle."?Thus wrote Shakspeare; and probably
* in ffis day the sentiment was well timed and appropriate
; but in these times, the "blind goddess"
is more disposed to dispense her favors than in
"days of yore." Those fortunate persons who
have recently received handsome prizes in the
lotteries managed by Wood, Eddy k Co., have no
reason to complain that fortune is fickle. By addressing
the above firm, at Augusta, Ga., or Wilmington,
Del., (who are-tbe successors of the well
known firm of Samuel Swan & Co.,) and enclosing
$10, $5 or $2 60, for a whole, fialf or^quarter tioket
in any of their grand schemes, purchasers will
be surprised to realize how poor an estimate
Shakspeare had of the character of the goddess.?

Presbyterian General Assembly.
India*apolis, la., May 19.
The General Assembly of the Presbyterian
Church of the United States (Old School) convened
this morning. In the absence of Dr. Scott, of
California, the last Moderator, Dr. Rice, of Chicago,
by appointment, presided, and delivered the
opening sermon. Three hundred and twelve delegates
are already present from every part of the
country. There are also some missionaries for
Asia and Africa present. The Rev. L. Breckenridge,
of Kentucky, was elected Moderator by acclamation.
The Rev. Mr.- Mann, of New York,
was elected temporary clerk.

Reported Duel and Death of 0. Jennings Wist.
?The Petersburg Express, in noticing the rumors
of a duel between Mr. Wise and Mr. Botts, and
the death of the former, says:
"It will amuse a large orowd hereabouts, who
beard Mr. Wise speak/or two hours at Mechanios
Hall, Wednesday night. For a dead man, we must
say that he acquitted himself with great credit,
and we believe Mr. Thornton, his opponent will
agree with us in this opinion."
Things that the War Fever has Snuffed Chit.?
The "Sickles" excitement; the Abolition anniversaries,
and the Women's Rlghters. The "meetings"
have taken place as usual, to be sure, but
the clang of war on the banks of the Ticino,
drowned their "exclamations." The public, just
now. are much more interested in knowing what
the prioe of pork, or cotton, or corn, or consols is
going to be, one, two or three months bonce, than
what is to be the newest cut of the Bloomer rig,
or whether the good time is ever going to'come,
when mothers may leave their great and little responsibilities,
to help rollthe political "machine."
Only 81 Delegates attended the Convention
at Vicksburg, Miss., and 55 of them were from
the State where the Convention was holdep. The
following is the numerical representation of each
State: Mississippi. 55 ; Texas, 1; South Carolina,
11 ; Georgia, 2 ; Tennessee. 4; Alabama. 1;
Louisiana, 5; Florida. 1; and Kansas 1. Quite
a small turn out.
A Relic.?Messrs. Eason found in the sand,
dredged by their steamer in the Maffit Channel,
on Friday, a piece of silver opiate, supposed to
have originally belonged to the private stock of
Sir Peter Parker. It can be seen at Messrs. Eason's
machine shop, corner of Nassau and Columbus
streets.?Charleston Mercury, 23<1.
Welt. Merited Appointment.?We areplensed
to learn (says the Columbia Carolinian of the 17th)
that theCourt of Errors has appointed, under the
recent act of the Legislature, Edmund Bellinger,
Esq., of our city, sole Commissioner to Codify the
laws of the State. His legal learning and indefatigable
industry admirably qualify him for the
very important duties of the commission.

Flour.?The transactions in Flour this week
have been large, partaking of a speculative character.
At the forepart of the week, the market
opened dull at $2.50 for the best grades, but suddenly
advanced to $2.50 for Ordinary, to good
Common, and $3 to $3.10 for Superfine and Extra.
, The advancing tendency, however, was
checked by the Steamer's news showing a decline
in breadstuffs in the European markets. On the
receipt of this news, buyers became less anxious
to operate, at the current rates paid previous to
the arrival of the Steamer.
Corn.?Very much wanted?the supply very
