AH UHFOHTOTJATE INDIVIDUAL.
The feet is, Jake, I must have been bom on a
Friday, for I'm the most unlucky man born
in old PikS. Well,-*hVfacl is, I aint had do |
lack since you left here, and how in the
thunder Pm aliye-now is more'n "I can tell.
About the end' of December, the old man*
told me to take eightbales o' cotton to Montgomery
and sell" it/and ef I wanted to get
any little traps'for myself to do it. Well, I'
took the cotton to .'Montgomery and sold it
fur ten cents a pound, and it 'twant two
hours after that, I met Joe Sparks, who had
sold fourteen hales of wus cotton than mine
fur eleven cents a pound?ef he didn't 1*11
be darned ! Well, I strayed round about
Montgomery fur two days seem' the sights,
- ? * - *- ' ?1 T? ^ ?? i-- tb Pan

Wescott. As we were agoingfcrleive for home
next morning, we thought we woold have a
good time of it that -might; so we went to a.
rustyrant, or whatever's the name of itrto
have a good bit of suthin to eatN A tali fellter,
with a sheet tied on front, come into
the stall where we wus settin, and commenced
a bowin and sorapin and grinnin, and
handed Ben a program. Ben handed it to me
cause he couldn't read, and I made out to
read "shad," right on the top -of it. Now,
Jake, you needn't laugh, for I never seed a
shad in all my life till then, and I allurs took
up an idea, that a shad were a fish about the
size of a pyrcb, and I could eat half a dozeD
pyrchany time, and reckoned Ben and Joe
oould do the same ;.so I just told the fellow
with the sheet on, to bring along eighteen
shad, and have theaf fried-brown at that !
"Well, we set there'and talked and talked,
and the shad didn't come, till birneby Joe
started to go call the feller, when he met
three niggers* a comin, and each nigger had
a.tray with six shad in it.. Great Golly,
Juke, ef the leetlest of them shad want a foot
long, 1 wish I may he derned ! Says I look
here, stranger; what do you call them ere ?"
'Shad,' says he.
'Shad!' says I.
'Yes, sir,' says he; *'and fine ones too?
?first of the season, sir.'
'What's the tax on em ?' says I.
'83 apiece,' says he.
Jake, was you ever kicked by a mule??
If vou was, you monght know about how I
felt. Says I?^
'Boys, I'll pay for the fish; butef I eatenDy
of 'em I hope they may ohoke me !'
I gave the feller 854 outen the oj3 man'6
money, and as I was goin out, he hollered at
me and told me to give him a call next time
I came back to Montgomery. Jake, yon
know I'm nota very stout man, bat I'm reckened
some up in Pike, apd if he'd been thar,
instead of Montgomery, tnere's notellin'.how
I might have disfigured that face of his'n,.'
Well, I left Ben and Joe a setting thar,
and went to the hotel afid got into bed.?
That nigftl^ somebody basted open the door
while I was asleep and. took my breeches
and every darned cent of the old man's,
money. Thar I was, Jake, with no money
and no breeches, and what to do L didn't
know. I was afraid to go home without the
money; the'old man would have never got
over me. I sent for Ben Westcott, and
borrowed twonty-five dollars and a pair of
breeches from bim, and took thb first boat
for Mobile, and I be darned if L'd stopjthi*
side of Texas, if I could help it. When we
got down to SeLny, it was night, and I went
ashore while they was takin' in cotton. Just
as the boat was a startin' a feller steps up
and sez he/ 'mister, wish'd you'd give me a
half dollar for two quarters.' I give him the
half, took the two quarters,-aud the boat
started. I looked at the..quarters as soon ,
as I got into the cabin of the boat, and
Jake, I be dogonn'd if they wasn't both five
dollar gold pieces. I didn't say a word to
nobody, but I reckon I struok a line for my ?
state room about as fast as anything you ever
see, for fear some one would come and claim
the money. Next morniDg I went to the
bar and took a drink. By the by, Jake, they
keep mighty nice lioker on the boat. I drunk
the whiskey and slapped down one of my
crold Dieces. and told him I bad no smaller"
O * . change.
The feller looked at ,the-money
sharp and looked at m? sharper, and bimeby
he says, sorter savageous like, 'look here/ ,
stranger, where did you get that ?r
Well, I was afraid to tell him how I got
it, and so says I, boldly, 'I got it in Monti
gomery.'
'Well, it's a counterfeit,' says he, 'it aint
worth a cent.'
I run my hand in my pocket and took out
the other gold piece, and showed it to him,
and I wish I may be darned, Jake, if they
wasn't both counterfeit.
It was no use a talkin'; I knowed I was
irmocent, but then there was two counterfeits,
and they swore I was trying to pass
spurious money. They run to my state room
to search my baggage; they jist swore I
wasn't all right, for they said a man as is all
right and squar', don't generally travel all
the way from Pike county to Texas without
some baggage. The barkeeper and the mate,
and the captain and the cook, all rared and
charged and got the passengers together,
and they held a confab and finally agreed to
be easy on me. They wouldn't take me to Mobile
and put me in jail, but they just run the
boat agin the bank, put out a plank, and
told me to make telegraph time in gettin' off.
Jake, I knowed I was innocent, and told 'em
so, but but it was no use. I reckon I got
off that boat quicker'n I got on it.
The place whar they put me out was a
reg'lar cane brake, and the mud was about
two feet deep. I got out after a labile, and |
walked two miles before I got to any house,
and when the derned niggers see'd me, they
sikt the dogs on me, and tired as I was,
there wasn't one of era could ketch me.?
Well, I wandered about from place to place,
till at last I got down here to Mobile. I had
a little money J$ft from payin' my passage
at Montgomery, and got me some common
clothes. Waitin' round here to see if I could
find anybody that knowed me and help me
on to Texas, the guard took me up as a suspicious
character, found the same gold pieces ,
in. my pocket when they searched, me and
kept me in the guard-house till they could
find out sumthin' about me, and I'd been
there yit if I hadn't thought of you, a"d told
'em you knowed me. You're a trump, Jake,
and I reckon I'll take your advice?go back
home and tell the old man a straight truth
about the matter.
We heard "Jake" tell him to call at his
store the next morning and get some money,
after which we left, cogitating upon the glorious
uncertainty of appearances, the fickleness
of fortune, and the high price of shad.

JO SUGGS AT THE. CAWDY, STEW.
Boys, did I ever Felt you about Jo's adventure
at Molly Dobs' candy stew down on i;
Hnggins Creek ? ?
Well, if I never did, here goes. Jo you
know, was a round chunk of a fellow, wore':
tighjj pants and a hob tail coat, and vfas monjjrogtBjafraid
of the gals. >
The gals, though^ warn't afraid of Jo, if
he did own.lapd and nigger,?for-?ich,jike
have no terrors forthetn. Welt not being
afraid of Jo, of-course they didn't fear the
other fellows, who were minus all .these ?
Well then/Jo was axed, along with a number
of.them, to come down iP Molly Bobs'"
mammy's to .a candy stew, and. down Jo
went; with all his fat and bashfulness, and
.when he got there the house was full of galsand
fellows, and the candy had been poured
out to cool, and was setting'all aboht 'the
room on chairs and tables. So goon as he
'entered all eyes were on him??F mean the'
gals, for Jo was considered a/gfeat catch,
and Jo blushed"; bat old Mrs. Bob's and
Molly .rushed to him, seized him by the
hand and literally overpowered him with
kind greetings; he became oonFnsed, his legs
got weak,.and he looked about for a placeto
sit down. Molly and her mammy kept
crowding him: TBey were right after Jo's
tracks, ,'and lie was straight after a chair,
and as he cast his eye back, he thought he
saw' a Soft cushioned one. and' he took a
squat at it, and as he touched it, you never
heard such a yell in your life; he lifted him-,
self, out of it elear into the very middle of
the door, clapped his -hands on bis breeohcs
and wiggled like a worm in hot embers,
while the smoking candy trickled down his
legs. The gals all screamed, Molly fainted.
I seized a bucket of water, Mrs. Dobs the
dish tub, and right at Jo we both dashed as'
he rushed out of the room.-. Bat luckily he
stumbled and fell and Mrs. Dobs came right
on top of him, tub aud all. ' To make things
sure" I, chugged him With the bucket of water
abtiut the seat of agony. He roared, I'
tell you, and when we Jifted him up, his
hands were stuck fust behind him. The
cold water had done the work, and there
was no loosening them without fire and hot
water. He begged us not to take him baok
among the gals, but it was no use?there
was no where else to take him?and we pulled
him right among them, and stood him
with his back to the fire, and poured hot
water where his hands were'stuck, while all
the gals blushed, covered tip their faces,
and wondered if he was much burnt.?
^'Powerfully ' damaged'.' says I. At" this. .
"Molly screamed aod swooned again, and- Jo .
gave his hands a sudden wrench, bolted oat
of the house, aod took down the road like
forty devils were after him, and about one
minute aftet another fellow followed him,
and a woman close on to him with a broomstick.
. That boy?, was me and old' Mrs
Dobs, but she got no nearer me than I did
Jo. I tell you the "running was powerful,
and I can't to this day, decide which is most'
stimulating?a dish of hot candy, as Jo took
it, or the sight.ofa brpomstigk ip the hands
of an angry woman. But boys, if you want
to have fun, just say "lasses-candy" to Jo;,
it will do yon good to. pee hitn clasp his
hands and grin. . % '

GOING THE ENTIRE PORKER.
Old Levi Allen used to go tin peddling
in his younger days, at which business he
accumulated quite a fortune before he was
seven and twenty. "?he neighbors of the
borough where he finally settled, as the proprietor
of a pretty large farm, would ofteu
insinuate that Allen had not been aoy too
honest in gathering together his riches, and
such was the. faot. A fellow, sinner has
since revealed some of the old man's youthful
shortcomings and over-goings, and there
was ojae?h?odge" of his so original that it is
worth a mention.? cIt was this : f
."Wherever our dealer in tin-ware chanced
iqput up far the night, he was pretty suie '*
to make his way .to the best bed in the house.
From t! is bed he \vould abstract a quantity "
of the feathers, and having a bag for the
purpose, contrive to smuggle out the samn
and get it stowed away in his ,"kit"*bofore
any one was stirring. This proceeding, giving
him several pounds of good geese, feathers
every day, did not a little towards swelling
the profits of his business, and'we are assured
that it..was .only one of many similar
-" LA ? a^I.
prauuues iu \vmcu ?no muuigvu.
On one occasion Allen $lept in a bed
which was very scanty?a diminutive bed, a
bed of few feathers, but all it contained were
"live geese," and unusually good at that.?
The speculative tin-ware" merchant thought *
it would be rather small business to take
away feathers from a case containing so few
?in short, that his only sensible mode of
procedure was to take' the entire bed. He
accordingly rose before the sun, and Commenced
shoving it out the rear window, with
the intention to go down on account of "that
'ere colic," and stow it away before any one
was "up." Hut, as ill luck would have it,
the host had ariseo, and was out UDder the
window gathering some light chips aod fuel
for the morniDg fire, and when he saw the
bed "looming up" iu such an unnatural position,
rnd just ready to full to the ground")
be cried out to the pedlar:
'Halloa there, stranger! whatareyou doing?'
The astonished "operator" saw that he
was caught in the act, but his ready wit helped
him out.
"Doiug?" he rejoined, with a look full
of wrath, as he thrust his head ou.t and took
a survey of the field, "I guess some of these
infernal bed bugs will soon find out what I
am about?haven't slept a wink all mgbt!"
With this, he "let" the bed out of the ,
window ; and went down to the wood pile,
from whence he took a club, aod gave the
bed such a beating therewith as would have
been .fatal to any sort of "creeping thing"
ensconced therein. He theu took it back to
his room, and looked so "darned honest" at
breakfast, that the host didn't charge him
but half price for lodgings, and took it all
out in "tin."
A Sensible Detection.?A big, blackbuck
negro was charged before the Recorder
of New Orleans, by one of the genus dandy,
with stealing?or rather being caught in the
very act of stealing?his boots out of his !
bed-room, at an early hour in the morning, ;
A little liuib of the law?one of the sharp
practice class?who defended the negro,
was rather querulous in the cross-examination
of the complainant.
"Now, sir," he said, "you have told his
honor that you were in bed when the negro I
entered the room. Did you see him at the 1
time." "No." "Didyou hear him ?" "No." I
"How, then, came you to know that he 1
was stealing your boots?"
"Why, I smelt him ; opened ray eyes, and
found that he was?as one of our poets beau-j
tifully espressos it*?stealing and giving odor. <
