"HEBE SHE GOES, THESE SHE
GOES"
The following amusing and well told story
was published, for the first time, in one of
the city papers of Gotham, some fifteen yean
ago- A day or two since, wo fell in with a
gentleman who took pains to aoquainthimaelf
personally with the facta at the time of their
oeoprrenoe, and who vouohes for the truth*
fulness of the subjoined narrative:
Not long since, two stylish-looking persons
pot up for night in the upper part of the city. I
On the morrow, after ordering their bill,
they sent for the landlord, who was not long
in waiting upon his aristooratio guests.
<1 wish to purohase that old clock up stairs;
will you sell it 7' asked the elder, while the
younger oast his eyes over the oolumns of a
newspaper which lay upon the table. The
landlord, who had set no great value upon
the clook, exoept as an heir-loom, began to
suspeet it might possess the virtue of Heywood's
Qhair, all filled with coin?and almost
involuntarily the three ascended to the room
which contained it.
(The fact is,' said the elder, <1 onee won

' Twenty pounds!' ejaculated the landlord.
'Yes. You see there was one like it in a
room down in Essex, and a fellow bet me he
oould keep his fore-finger swinging with the
pendulum for an hour, only saying, 'Here
she goes, there she goes.' He oouldn't do
it. I walked the money out of him in no
time! . * . .
<Yoa did.' You couldn't walk it out of
me. 'I'll bet ten pounds I can do it on the
=? spot.'
'Done!' cried the stranger.
The olook struck eight, and with bis back
to the table and door, the landlord popped
into a chair.
'Here she goes, there she goes!' and his
finger waved a ourve, his eyes fuljy fixed on
the pendulum. The fellow's interruption.
' Where is the money ? Plank the money!'
The landlord was not to lose in that way.
His fore-finger slowly and surely went with
the pendulum, and his left hand disengaged
his parse from his pooket, which he threw behind
him on the table. All was silent;
the dapper man at length exolaimed.
'Shall I deposit the money in the hands of
the waiter V
'Here she goes, there she goes!' was the
only answer.
One of the wags left the room. He heard
him go down stairs, but he was not to be dis
turbed by that trick.
Presently the waiter entered; and touching
him Upon the shoulder, asked.^ c .
r. B i, are yOu crazy T What are yon
doing V
'Here she goes, there she goes 1' he responded,
his hand and fore-finger waving as
before.
The waiter rushed dowa stairs, oalled one
of the neighbors, and invited him op to see
his master. They asoeuded, and the neighbor
seizing him gently by the shoulder, in
aa imploring voice, said.
'Mr. B , do not sit here. Come, go
down stairs; what can possibly possess you to
he sitting here!'
' Here she goes, there she goes!' was the
only reply, and the solemn face and the slowmpving
finger settled the matter.
'He is mad,' replied the friend, 'we must
go for a doctor.'
The landlord was not to he duped, he was
not to he deceived, though the whole town
came to interrupt him.
* 'You had bettor call up his wife/ added
r the friend.
<flere she -goes, there she goes ! repeated
the landlord, -and stiH the hand moved on.
In a moment, his wife entered, full of agony
of soul.
' My dear/ she kindly said, 'look on me, it
is your wife who speaks!'
' Here she goes, there she goes !' his hand
continued to move, but his wife wouldn't go;
she would stay, and he thought she was determined
tooonspire against him, and make
him lose the wager. She wept as she con.
tinned,
'What cause have you for this ? Why do
yo* do so? Has your wife'
'Here she goes, there she goes!' and his
finger seemed to be tracing its airy progress,
for any thing she could ascertain to the contrary.
' My dear/ she till continued, thinking
that the thought of his child, whom he fondly
loved, would tend to restore him, 'shall I
call up your daughter ?'
'Here ahegoes, there she goes'! the landlord
again repeated, his eyes becoming more
and more fixed and glazed from the steadinness
of the gaze. A slight smile, which had
a great effect upon the minds of those pres
ent, played upon his faoe as he thought of
the many unsuccessful resorts to win him
from his purpose, and of bis success in baffling
them. The physican entered. He stood

anxioos inquiry of bis wife, answered.

better. The maid had better stay away; do
not let the maid'
'Here she goes, there she goes!' yet again
in harmony with the waving finger, issued again
from the lips of the landlord.
'A consultation, I think, will be necessary,'
sgid the physician. 'Will you run at once
for Dr- A V
The kind neighbor buttoned up his coat
and hurried from the room.
In a few minutes Dr. A , with another
medical gentleman entered.
'This is a sorry sight,' said he to the doctor
with him.
'Indeed it is sir,' was the reply. It is a
sudden attack, one of the'
' Here she goes, there she goes !' was the
sole reply. The physicians stepped into a corner
and consulted together.

I will dispatch a servant for a barber,'
a resolution whioh he put immediatately
into effect.
'Here she goes, there she goes!' almost
shouted the landlord, as the minute hand arrived
at the desired point.
Tho barber arrived, ho was naturally a
talkative man, and when the doctor made
some casual remarks, reflecting upon the
quality of the instrument he was about to use,
he replied.
<Ab, ha! Monsieur, you say very bad razor.
'Tie beautiful I Look ! ?look ! Very
good isn't he ?'
(Here die goes, there she goes V screamed
the landlord, his hand moving en?oa his
face "gathering a smile, ami hiaTthpb frame

The barber was amazed. 'Here she goes,
there she goes,'he responded in .the best
English he coold use. ?Vare shall, vare
shall I begin ? Vat is dat he say'
< Share his head at once/ interrupted the
doctor.
< Here she goes, there she goes I' for the
last time cried the landlord, as the clock
struck the hoar of nine, and he sprung from
his seat in an eestacy of delight, scre&miog
at the top of his voice, as he skipped around
the room.
* Fve won it I I've won it!'
* What?' said the waiter.
4 What ?' eohoed the doctors.
4 What re-echoed the wife.
Why, the wager?ten pounds I' But, casting
his eyes around the room, and missing
the young men who had induced him to
watch the clook, he asked:

?They went away in their phaeton nearly

The troth flashed like a thunder-bolt
through his mind- They had taken|hi? pocket

had decamped?a couple of swindling sharpers,
with wit to back them.

THE New American Cyelopmdia is popular without
being superficial, learned but not pedan- 1
tic, comprehensive but sufficiently detailed, free
from personal pique and party prejudice, fresh
and yet accurate. It is a complete statement of
all that is known upon every important topic with- ,
in the scope of human intelligence. Every article
in it has been specially written for its pages by
men who are world-renowned upon the topics of
which they speak. They are required to bring
the subject up to the present moment; to state
just how it stands note. All the statistical information
is from the latest reports; the geograpbi- j
cal accounts keep pace with the latest explnra- j
tions ; historical matters include the freshest just
views; the biographical notices not only speak of
the dead, bnt also of the living, and of the living
up to within the last half year.
And the work is cheap: three dollars a volume;
and each volume contains more?we have carefully
computed the contents of both?more than the
whole six volumes of Bancroft's history, which
arc sold at two dollars a volume, making in all
twelve dollars. Every family ought to possess a
copy of the New Cycloboedia. It is a library in
itself. Let each man save twenty-five cents a
week, and by the time the work is complete he
can not only own the fifteen volumes, bat also
a handsome book case to put them in. 8ave five
cents a day, (a little self denial will do it,) and
you save enough to buy a set of books which will
give you sound information upon all points about
which you wish to inquire. School children,?
certainly the members of our High schools?can
all have it. 8ave the pennies which are given
to you, run tTrends and "do chores" when you
can, and thus earn a quarter of a dollar a week,
?and the task is done. Mechanics! yon have
not ranch time to read; then this is just the work
for yon ; it will help you upon all points of en- |
quiry, and three hours over work per week will i
buy it. Lawyers, physicians, clergymen! it will
give Oreaatn anci accuracy 10 your luionnauun
and add largely to yonr influence and income.

Joy to the Admirers of
A Fine Head of
RICH GLOSSY HAIR
Talk of beanly, it cannot exist without a fine
head of hair, then read the following, and if you
n!jk more, see circular around each bottle, and no
one can doubt.
PROFESSOR WOOD'S HAIR RESTORATIVE.?We
call the attention of all,
old and young, to this wonderful preparation,
which turns bnck to its original color, gray hair?
covers the head of the bald with a luxuriant
growth?removes the dandruff, itching, and all
cutaneous eruptions?causos a continual flow of
the natnral fluids ; and hence, if used as a regular
dressing for the hair will preserve its color, and
keep it from falling to extreme old age, in all its
nntnral beauty. We call then upon the bald, the
grey, or diseased in scalp, to use it; and surely
the young will not, as they value the flowing locks,
or the witchiag curl, ever be without it. Its
praise is upon the tongue of thousands.
The Agent for Prof. Wood'9 Hair Restorative
in New Haven, received the following letter in regard
to the Restorative, a few weeks since :
Deep RrvER, Conn., July 28, 1856.
Mr. Leavenworth?Sir: I have been troubled
with dandruff or scurf on my head for more than
i year, my nair oegan 10 come oui, scan ana natr
together. I saw in a New Haven paper about
"Wood's Hair Restorative" as a cure. I called at
pour store on the 1st of April last, and purchased
jne bottle to try it, and I found to my satisfaction
t was the thing ; it removed tho scurf and new
mir began to grow ; it is now two or three inches
h length where it was all off. I have great faith
n it. I wish you to send me two bottles more by
Vfr. Post, the bearer of this. I don't know as any
>f the kind is used in this place, you may have a
narket for many bottles after it is known here.
Yours with respect, RUFU8 PRATT.
Poiladblphia, Sept. 9,1856.
PROF. WOOD?Dear Sir: Your Hair Rostoraive
is proving itself beneficial to me. The front,
ind also the back part of my head almost lost its
lovering?in fact bald. I have used but two half
>int bottles of your Restorative, and now the top
if my head is well studded with a promising orop
if young hair, and the front is also receiving its
lenefit. I have tried other preparations without
,ny benefit whatever. 1 think from my own peronal
recommendation, 1 can induce many others
o try it. Yours respectfally,
D. R. THOMAS. M. D.
No. 464 Vine street
Viicmres, Ia., June 22,1863.
PROF. 0. J. WOOD: As you are about to
aanufacture and vend your recently discovered
lair Restorative, I will Btatc, for whomsoever it
t may concern, that I have used it and known
ithers to use it?that, I have, for several years,
teen in the habit of using other Hair Restoratives,
md I find your vastly superior to any other I
mow. It entirely cleanses the head of dandruff,
md with one month's proper use will restore any
lerson's hair to the original youthful color and
exture, giving it a healthy, soft and glossy appearance
; and all this, without discoloring the
lands that apply it, or the dress on which it drops,
would, therefore, recommend its use to every
me desirous of having a fine color and texture to
lair. Respectfully yours,
WILSON KING.:
