Charleston Market.
Chablrstok, Dec. 20.
There was a eery active demand for cotton to
day; the purchasing, however, was confined to one
or rwo fluyers, and resulted in the sale of upwards
of 8,200 bales, at the subjoined prices, viz. 10$ @
12 cents.

New Tork Market.
New Yobk, Dec. 20.
One thousand eight hundred bales of cotton are
reported, at firm rates. Moor is nrm, wuu d?k?
of 9,500 bbls. Wheat is dull, with transactions
limited to 1,000 bushels. 11,000 bushels of corn
were taken firmly at former rates. An active business
in sugars, at 6@7c. for Mnsoovados.
The Wanderer's Cargo.
Two hundred and seventy-seven of the cargo of
Africans recently landed near Brunswick, were
brought up the Savannah river, and put ashore
yaaterday evening about three o'clock, at the
mouth of Horse Creek, three miles below this
oity, on the Carolina side. One of the river boats
is supposed to have taken them from the boat which
brought them by Savannah in the night, to a point
twelve miles above that city. We learn on good
authority that the orgin&l cargo consisted of 420,
and that not one of them died or was seriously
ill on the passage. It is supposed that the Wanderer
acted only as a decoy boat, and that the vessel
that brought them is at large. Citizens of oar
oity are probably interested in the enterprise, and
those brought up the river are supposed to be their
share of "the spoils" and have been distributed
on the plantations. It is quietly hinted that this
is the third cargo landed by the same company
daring the last six months.
We learn that one of onr citizens has bought a
slave from the lot recently landed just below this
city, Tor which he paid $250. He is a stout boy
about 14 years old, and considerable curiosity
has been manifested this morning to see the "distioguised
visitor."?Augusta Dispatch, 15/A.
The Macon (Ga.) Journal, December loth, says:
We learn that one of the recently imported Africans?about
which there sems to .be some stir
among our friends on the seaboard?passed
through this place on Monday last, en route for
Columbus. A fellow-passenger informs ns that
ha seemed quit* observant of men and things. The
seosation of a newly caught African in his first
journeying by the railroad, must be somewhat
peculiar.
The Columbus (Ga.) Enquirer, December 16th,
says: '
One of the negroes from the Wanderer was
brought to this city yesterday by a gentleman who
obtained him from the lot carried op the Svannah
river. He is reposented to be a likely and very
tractable young fellow.
TheAogusta Chronicle, December lOlb, says:
We learn from reliable authority, that about two
hundred and seventy of the wild Africans, a portion
of the cargo of the "Wanderer," aro now on
a plantation in South Carolina, two or three miles
below this city, on the Savaanah river, having
1 k. k.ntsn Have n?n nn hoard a steam
ucou uivugto ? V- -?>
boat, from some point near Savannah; and we
suppose will soon be offered for sale. Indeed, we
are informed that sales hare already been made
of some of the cargo.
The success of this enterprise by the owners of
the * Wandrerer," establishes the fact very conclusively,
that if the Southern people deajre or intend
to suppress this traffic, they must rely upon
themselves, as a reliance upon the government
will be of little avail. The coast of tho slavehold
ing States is so extensive that the entire navy of
the United States, if concentrated upon it cannot
maintain the law inviolate. Hence the great necessity
for the prompt and efficent action of the
people themselves, to protect their rights and interests.
They should not hesitate to resort to
.any all legitimate I'eans, to artest at once and
forever a traffic so disastrous, if permitted, to the
jtublio weal of the South.
If there exist upon the statute books of the
Southern States any laws, which will protect them
against this traffio, they shonld he enforced most
ridgidly against all violators.

last. JOHN RANDOLPH WRIGHT, son of the laic Dr.
8. Wright, in tho 21st year of his ago.
However mysterious to us may appear the dealings of
God In his Providence, yet we know and are assured that
"all things work together for good to them that'love God, to
them who are the called according to his purpose." But a
short time 6lnce the record was made of the death of the father,
and now the eldest son, on whom centered the hopes of
a fond mother and affectionate sisters. A short time before
he was taken sick, ho obtained a hope In Christ. And although
he had ever been an obedient son and loving brother,
he now became more endeared to friends and relatives.?
During his illness, which lasted about two weeks, he seemed
to entertain no hope of recovery; and It was surprising to
bear with what cheerfulness and resignation he spoke of his
last hour*. Ho had no fear for the future, but with the
bright hope of a better land?a home In the skies?his trust
was fcrmly and unwaveringly fixed on Christ his Savior.?
As we stood beside his dying conch and witnessed his tranquilty
and resignation, we could not but ejacnlnte with
streaming eye and swelling heart, "Let me die the death of
the righteous nnd let my end be like his." Calmly, sweetly,
joyfully acquiescent in God's adorable pleasure, he fell
asleep In Jesus with the composure of a child upon its mother's
bosom.
"Friend after friend departs;
Who has not lost a friend ?
There Ls no union here of hearts,
That finds not hero on end." J.
